Just read an article about how the PS3 lost 1 billion dollars in the last fiscal quarter, wiping out Sony's entire profits for the quarter. Kind of sad really, I would like to buy one of those some day when the price comes way down and there are a lot more games for it. I'm sure it's a great system and all. Now I almost wonder if it will still be around in the future. Just too ridiculously expensive.
That's exactly why I didn't buy a PS3.
Overpriced...
Overhyped...
And hardly any games.
(and the games that were decent were ultimately upstaged by groundbreaking ultracool Xbox 360 games)
Sorry...but the PS3 just doesn't deliver the goods like my Xbox 360 can.
It's gotta make you wonder what Sony was thinking?
I mean...they did so well with the PS1 and PS2.
You'd think they would've had it mastered by now.
You're better off turning your PS3 into one of these (http://www.therealps3grill.com/)

The PS3 has been a complete disaster from the get go.
While I'm not an X-Box 360 fan by any means, Microsoft has really made that system work by making sure there are great games for it. The PS3 hasn't had jack since it came out.
Plus, the X-Box 360 is almost 300 dollars less in some places near where I live.
Lightning will usually strike twice, but it clearly hasn't struck for the 3rd time for Sony.
The ironic thing is that Nintendo backed out of working with Sony in the '90s to develope a CD based gaming system, apparently unwilling to take a gamble and evolve away from the concept of a cartridge based system. Sony, having already gone through with making the system and confident it would lead to big bucks, released the console themselves and the Playstation was born. Here we are a decade later and, after Big N falling behind Sony for the last two generations of console sales, the Wii and DS have systematically humiliated both the PS3 and PSP, helping shunt Sony into their financial hole and forcing the company to drop the price of their handheld down to nearly half of the original asking price less than two years after it's release in an effort to compete. Personally I'm happy to see Nintendo back to the front of gaming innovation with it's motion sensor Wii and dual screen, touch control DS units. :bouncegiggle:
As for Sony's monster financial losses, this is what happens when your confidence in your product and your premature faith in an unproven media is bigger than the disposable income of your target demographic. It's like Atari including a Beta deck player in the 2600 or Sega putting a Laserdisc player in the Genesis. The only people I'm laughing at moreso than the geniuses at Sony right now are the sh!theads who spent thousands for their PS3s on eBay or the primates who will be doing prison time for mugging and shooting people to steal their PS3s. Sure, the degeneration of society is depressing overall, but at least it's good for a laugh from time to time. :teddyr:

Actually, there is an explicit parallel to this: R.E.A.L. 3D0 circa 1993! Licensed by Sanyo, Panasonic, and Goldstar, this was the first 32-bit system to hit the United States. It was capable of playing 3D0 games, audio CDs, CD+G, photo CDs and some models even had a VCD attachment. It was marketed as something that would replace the television, gaming console, and personal computer. Oh, and it started at $700+ US. Haha. What a flop. For the time, the graphics were incredible, shaming Sega CD and PC-based games. But yeah, it was a luxury exclusively for the wealthy and as such the game catalog pretty much started and ended with
Night Trap and
Road Rash. And for those of you who are familiar with Vivid, the massive adult movie distributor, they had a branch called Vivid Interactive which licensed dozens of (mostly softcore) porn for the 3D0. You know, extra incentive for Daddy to buy such an expensive toy for Lil' Timmy. :teddyr:
Right now the only game system I own is a 3rd party NES. It is top-loading, so the games don't freeze, and the controller ports are identical to the original Nintendo system so all my old equipment still works. I don't think I'll ever buy any other system. I'm getting too old for this nonsense and all the colors and movements in modern games trigger fierce acid flashbacks. :teddyr:
I remember the R.E.A.L. 3DO! My friend George and I were convinced that is we saved up our money we could buy one and take turns with keeping it at our places on opposite weekends. That never happened... I'd like to get one of those now just for that "this is making up for me not having an income when I was a child" factor. If only one of the higher ups at Sony actually played video games in the '90s, maybe they could have pointed out the 3DO issue and saved themselves A BILLION DOLLARS. But then I wouldn't have any corporate a-holes to laugh at like I do now! :teddyr:

And the ironic thing about that story is that about a decade earlier, Atari turned down Nintendo's offer to sell the NES as an Atari system.

That's an awful strong generalization Ash. Other than Gears Of War, I can't begin to think of a game that is worthy of purchasing an Xbox360 for. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have one, mainly for Xbox Live and Arcade but most of the games I can already play on my PC which I would much rather do.
Personally, I couldn't care less about the PS3's loss. I had a PS2 but I'm not a fanboy. I'd like to have a PS3, but it is so damned overpriced. I don't have an HDTV so I don't care about the blu-ray player.
Now, on the other hand, Microsoft did make a mistake by not having an HD-DVD player in the machine out of the box. They are still using standard DVDs with their limited capacity. When you start creating games that are truly epic and honestly use the full power of the console, then you will be looking at games that come on 3 and 4 different discs. If this does happen then maybe, just maybe, Sony will have had the upper hand.
If I had an X360, PS3 and Wii in front of me and I could pick anyone of them, I would pick the PS3. I would then sell it, and buy a Wii with a ton of games. Nintendo wooed me back into their graces with my DS Lite and I'd love to have a Wii. The games don't look great aesthetically but they do look like fun.

And that's why games were created in the first place: to be fun. :teddyr:
As for the 360, a friend is selling me his with 6 games for $300. Since I don't have a good enough PC to play modern type games on, I'm getting it so I can play
Elder Scrolls IV. He and I have very similar game tastes and he says it's literally the greatest game he's ever played. This guy's a harsh critic of everything too, games especially, so that's a strong reccomendation if I've ever heard one. Also, I'm eager to play
Dead Rising. Are you really not all that intrigued by playing out
Dawn of the Dead in the comfort of your own home Ska?

Argh....forgot all about Dead Rising. I will admit, that game looks fantastic.
As for Elder Scrolls IV.....prepare to give your life away to that game. I still have about a two month period that is a blur because of that damn game. It's absolutely immersing and you will LOVE it, I promise. I normally don't care for RPGs but that one is special. Fighting in an arena, becoming a vampire, finding lost civilizations.....
I might need to start playing it again.

No kidding!
I just started playing Elder Scrolls a few weeks ago and I can't stop.
It's probably the best RPG for a game console I've ever played.
My character is an elf marksman named Tolar.
Still building up my skills and I'm up exploring in those mountain caves.
Haven't been to the arenas yet.
I've got a long way to go...
I'm already afraid of what's going to happen to me when I pick up Elder Scrolls IV. When I first purchased the XBox, Elder Scrolls III was the second game I purchased (right behind Armed & Dangerous). I proceeded to dump around 100 hours into it (most of which was done roaming and building my character before actually jumping into the storyline itself...) before handing the system over to a friend so he could mod it out, put a second hard drive into it, and fill it full of emulators and roms for me. When I got it back, I discovered that the original games saves I had when I gave it over to him had been wiped out in the process... I've since taken to whimpering every time I look at the game, sitting on my shelf and begging me to start the long hard road all over again... is it weakness or strength that keeps me from starting from scratch?

I waited on the Arenas until my character was extremely strong. Some of the matches would have meant death for me otherwise. I also had some great enchanted weapons when I decided to give the arenas a chance.
One warning for you guys playing it, Vampirism isn't as great as it sounds. I hate only being able to travel at night. Ended up not being a great decision on my part, but still was fun.
Tomb,
If you need some convincing as to whether to get into Elder Scrolls IV for the Xbox 360, watch this video review.
You'll want to get it after watching it.
This video review is what compelled me to buy it.

Elder Scrolls IV is the one reason I want an XBox 360. Well, that and the upcoming Halo 3. The problem is, I have so little free time as it is, and a game like Elder Scrolls will pretty much suck up what I do have...and that makes the wife annoyed. :teddyr: I also want a Wii for the latest Zelda game. PS3 can wait. I'd rather have the other two systems first.
Did somebody mention the 3DO? Man, I keep getting the itch to find one used so I can then go hunt down a copy of "Star Control II" for it. That game ate a lot of my time way back when. Well, that and "Panzer General," but "Panzer General" cheats.

I remember a friend of mine bought a 3DO back in the day when I was telling him that he was wasting his money.
He also had bought an Atari Jaguar as well when I told him not to buy one.
Well, live and learn.
The only system I kind of made a mistake of getting was the Sega Saturn but even that system had some great games.
I have a Wii. I love it, but so far, its only good for Nintendo exlusives. 3rd party games are often sloppy and difficult as far as the controls go, Like Spiderman 3 and Marvel Ultimate Aliance. I work at a game store and our PS3 breaks down all the time.
I don't like the idea of buying a console system just for a game, but come October when GRAND THEFT AUTO IV is released...Of course, I'll get other games, but GTA4 is the biggie for me. No other game series has meant as much to me as that sweet little saga. The designers are so clearly awake to pop culture in all it's mindless inescapability(perhaps why I love FUTURAMA so much as well) the games are wall-to-wall gags. The radio stations are brilliant, the ads constantly pushing the bounds of taste with a cleverness almost entirely absent from video games.
I have to upgrade from the PS2 at some point and up until this past winter I would have been prepared to stick with Sony, but they blew it. I'm no electronic gaming guru, but I know when a company drops the ball and squanders all the goodwill it's loyal customers have.
I will be going to the XBOX 360...I've actually been honing my skills with that unctious controller by playing at a friends house as often as possible(Research!...yeah, that's what it is..Research!).
btw, I don't know is anyone else here digs the GRAND THEFT AUTOs but here's a decent YouTube of the teaser for the next one. While teasers are usually just pretty picture promotion, and video game teasers are notorious for using cut-scene/opening movie footage rather than gameplay, this one really strikes a chord...I mean Philip Glass? KOYAANISAQATSI? These guys know just how cultured their fans can be...

I've got ESIV: Oblivion for the PC. Its graphics are awesome and the combat action is way better than ESIII, but the storyline of the main quest isn't as much fun as the main quests of Morrowind and its expansions, Tribunal and Bloodmoon. I will tell you this - Thieve's Guild and Dark Brotherhood quest lines are AWESOME!
Hope you get it soon!
I'm wondering if one version of GTA4 will look better than the other. I guess that'll finally show which system (the 360 or PS3) is the graphically superior console.
So it looks like Microsoft is on its way to losing a billion of it's own thanks to it's extended warranty and repair program for all those "red light of death" 360 units out there. Unlike Sony who lost their money because they had too much faith in an over-priced grill, at least Microsoft is attempting to appease their customers by owning up to a screw up and making things right... not that this is going to make their accountants any happier. Between both of their major competitors taking a monster shot in the proverbial wallet, Nintendos looking more and more the winner of this part of the war. :tongueout:
I have a Wii as well. As for 3rd party games, yeah, they're having trouble adjusting to the Wii's unique control scheme, as I expected, but I'm sure they'll get the hang of it at some point. Resident Evil 4: Wii edition, however, is great! I've always sucked at aiming a weapon with an analog stick, so being able to point and shoot with the Wii remote is a welcome relief from all that...plus it's a lot easier to score head shots. :teddyr: I think Nintendo should convince Sega to make a new House of The Dead game for the Wii too.
But they can't rest on their laurels right now, just because their console sales are high...Metroid Prime is supposedly due out next month, and if they delay it yet again, people are gonna think "Oh, There's old Nintendo again, not giving us any big titles until christmas".
As for the PS3...I'm sure I'll get one someday, but again, it all comes down to price, and games.
Also, Blu Ray = Betamax . That is all.
Well, the latest reports are that the PS3 is actually starting to gain again. They announced a 100 dollar price drop and sales are up 135%. That's not all that much considering how low sales were to begin with, but it's a start.
Word is that the Xbox360 might also see a price drop around the same time that Madden will be released. So that would put the 360 at right around 300 or so which should boost their sales. When the 360's price hits about 250 then I'll buy one without hesitation.

The price drop is in effect until the 60GB units (I think that was the one, maybe 40GB) are sold out then back to regular price. At least that's what I have learned.
