OK...I was bored this morning...been up since 3;00...anyway...I was poking around looking at some PRETENDERS videos...and found this cheezy 80's memory...YIKES!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5Lec3m1pLY What's up with the hair?
and more...gasp!
[youtube=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fx7GqfQCZeg again...YIKES!!!
...is it me...or did people actually think this was cool...? I dunno,I always thought it was some kinda goof back then, but it is kinda fun, in a real lamebrain way. Anybody remeber any oddball 80's stuff?
EDIT: in fact...this about sums it up! :bouncegiggle:
[youtube=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nIlFsERnmk
the first song "Obsession" was the theme song for Saturday Night's Main Event for a long time back in the day.
Man, that brings back some memories!
I remember roller skating at the local roller rink to that Obsession song when I was a kid.
I also remember skating to these songs too...

These are all great 80's videos and music (except for the Weird Al :smile:) Obssession, I Ran, and One Night In Bankok. New Wave was the pinnacle of all forms of music. It was the perfect blend of all things. The very apex of all music. Even better than 80's Rock/Heavy Metal. When I have more time I'll add many of my own New Wave favorites, but for now I'll leave you with

Good lord, suddenly it's like I'm in high school again and watching Night Tracks on TBS in the wee hours of the morning.
OH yes take me back to my drunk and broke days ... of working 2nd Shift in a factory and coming home at nidnight to drink until sunrise and watch MTV .. (when it was cool)

BLASPHEMER!
There is a reason why New Wave faded out and Rock hasn't.
That's not to say I don't like some New Wave...I do.
But to say it was better than rock/metal...no way!

Remember this 80's video?
[youtube=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7dAxvj2mlU
BERLIN! Damn, I'm old . . . I saw them live, opening for THE THOMPSON TWINS at the Garden State Arts Center I guess 1985 (the TWINS had "Hold Me Now" as a hit record at the time -- I left the concert hating that record.) BERLIN was quite absurd onstage, including a crotch-grab lead singer twirl . . . but to their credit, memorable!
Scott, if your examples of this New Wave pinnacle are these acts, I'm concerned.... :lookingup: where are THE TALKING HEADS, U2, BLONDIE, JOY DIVISION or NEW ORDER, ULTRAVOX, THE FIXX, CULTURE CLUB, INXS, THE CURE, COCTEAU TWINS, DEPECHE MODE, ELVIS COSTELLO . . . ?
WANG CHUNG? :bouncegiggle: Thanks for the memories!
I do think WEIRD AL YANKOVIC is underrated (though I don't claim to be a fan). And I think the pinnacle of 20th century western Pop, or at least its logical conclusion, is BECK's "Odelay."
Ash, the HERBIE HANCOCK video of "Rock it" was a delight to see again after a long time. Great record.
I'm a little disappointed...none of you dare dip into hair bands??? Feel my Aqua Net wrath...
Rockin' With Dokken
[youtube=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7Yno5p2D30
Sad to say I loved this band when I was in middle school
[youtube=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPfRtroo_LI
One of the worst bands ever...period...
[youtube=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0ZeRiQGgyY
This video looks like a B-movie convention...

Crimeny...now I gat "Talk Talk" stuck in my head! The thing about New Wave is,in my case at least,is ,wheteher your a fan or not,the songs tend to stick in your head...and the images are oddly compelling...just weird self ...dare I say...abuse? Kinda like...BAD MOVIES?
Is it just me,or do chicks who speak German somehow hot? I mean,German is such a clunky,robotic type of language...yet Nena makes it sound...sexy!
[youtube=425,350] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngl7U-L3YLk
In about '84,I went to NY..and my brother Mike got me turned on to this stuff.....
[youtube=425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLahs7yCprQ
Iusta listen to alotta Punk like BLACK FLAG,too...but it's not really good,laying around on a Sunday morning kinda music... but some punk(ie.the RAMONES,is just timeless,and (GASP!) happy and fun!!! What happened to bands that smiled and were happy? And FUN?
Joan Jett-saw her at the Hartford County Fair(!?!) in '86....god...she's soooo beautiful...and she was nice and loved the fans,and they loved her...I still listen to her music!

Your right RCMerchant how did NENA do it with the language, she must be a national heroine.

It was just a quick list. I had to go to bed last night. There were no bad New Wave songs :smile:. I'll post some better ones like you said with THE TALKING HEADS, BLONDIE, U2, B52'S, THE FIXX, and more. Right now I have to go to the gym.

It took decades for music to become New Wave and after that it's been all down hill ever since. :smile:
I have yet to figure out if I should thank Andrew for the youtube mod or curse him. :smile:
The 80s was a great time for music. The bands didn't care, and were experimenting with everything. Here are some of my favorites from then:

BARNES & BARNES album
Voobaha (it went with most of my vinyl about 15 years ago - damn!) Did you know that one of them was
BILL MUMY from
"Lost In Space?"

Adam and The Ants- "Stand and Deliver"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WT_0gPrzGA0
Wall of Voodoo- "Mexican Radio"- My favorite 'new wave' song, ever.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szhJzX0UgDM
The B-52s- "Rock Lobster"
And since AllHollowsDay brought him up, here's my favorite musician:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4_G7HHJ0GE
"My Bologna" by Weird Al Yankovic- This is his first live performance, minus band, shortly before he took off in popularity in the '80s.
And to think, he became re-popular in 2006 with this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xEzGIuY7kw
White and Nerdy by Weird Al yankovic.
Well, it was Scott that actually brought up WEIRD AL YANKOVIC, I was merely responding... "My Bologna" certainly proves my point about AL being underrated. That was damned funny, creative, and never got tedious (like the KNACK song he's spoofing...) Brilliant. :thumbup:
One of my favorite bits of '80s cheeze, PETER SCHILLING "Major Tom" :

Wow...I cn't believe this old thread has been resurected...thats kinda kool...! :smile:
The Psychadelic Furs....I kinda liked them back then even....it all seems really cool now...I guess hindsight is 20/20 ...

Ah, I wasn't sure who brought him up. I saw your post, so thought it was you. The video I posted wasn't bad, but I prefer the full recording done a few years later, when he hired a full band and had them play with him.
Some great 80s cheese can be found in Europe as well. Here's Vanessa from Holland with her video "Upside Down"
