Title: Eating Healthy?
Post by: Mr. DS on June 23, 2007, 08:19:56 PM
I was wondering how many people on this board watch what they eat/excercise.  I had pretty high cholesterol at one point in my life and switched it around thus losing 20 lbs and lowering my cholesterol to a healthy level.   I eat a ton of tuna and chicken and simply feel much better about myself.  Don't get me wrong, I still snack on junk food and cheat once a week but I try to main a low fat diet.

I'd also like to open this up for heatlhy recipes you folks may have.

We generally only eat fish, cereal, yogurt, whole grain breads (also whole grain pasta), 1% milk, orange juice, water, fruit, and veggies. My wife likes green tea or pomegranate juice for anti-oxidents. Even dark chocolate.

Sushi is the most incredible and delicious meal one can eat. You will get a lot from eating sushi once a day.

Eat these things above and exercise 5 days out of the week making it part of your life. At least 6 hours of solid workout time a week.

Having said that we are not against having a good pizza once a week, homemade buffalo wings, homemade taco's with all the toppings, and maybe a big roasted pork belly cooked in our oven. We will even go to a Buffet once a month.

I still pack cheese curls for lunch at work.

Moderation when it come to food. Never filling up completely. (Well maybe at the occasional buffet).

It must be a way of life. Start out slow. Don't try to do all this in one week. Working towards it till it becomes a habit that becomes your way of living. You won't miss all the junk if you really understand nutrition and keeping your body tone.

Get into fitness and make it an important part of your life. Stay active.

I eat healthy and work out.  It is perfectly okay to eat junk food so long as it isn't a big part of your diet.  For instance one chocolate bar a week, will not comprise a big percentage of you food intake and is thus pretty negiligble.  Eating several cookies a day on the other hand is bad since the junk food is starting to take up a greater percentage of your total diet.

I truly think too its all about knowing whats in your food such as trans/sat fat, cholesterol, carbs, etc and what your body can or can't handle.  For example, I can eat carbs gallore but fats I can't handle so well.  One thing I've noticed is how people fall for the "NO TRANS FAT" on packages but don't realize that there are things much worse in the food than that.  Also, understand serving sizes is key I feel anyhow.

Yeah, I eat nothing but carbs and I've been teetering at about 60kg since the seventh grade.  I eat rice and pasta, sometimes between bread for that little bit of extra grain, maybe a potato or some eggs fried in for good measure.  I don't monitor my intake for health reasons so much as budgetary ones.  But if my dad is any indication, I should be able to live recklessly until I hit 40 or so, at which point I'll have to change my evil ways or bloat to the size of a whale.

I like to exercise and I try to eat healty.  I definitely could lose a few, but I'm strong healthy and do exactly as I please without hindrence from my body.  I'll never run a  marathon or anything, but I can work outside all day, do normal exercise, or walk for hours without problems.

We eat pretty healthy here.  Everything in moderation is the mantra.  We make sure to include fruits and vegetables at every opportunity.  To the kids, dessert means fruit/yogurt/stuff like that.  We go through loads of fruit:  bananas, strawberries, blueberries, melons, apples, oranges, pears, kiwis, mangos - it gets expensive, but neither of the kids are fat and both have lots of healthy energy.  Granted, there are times we wish they were sedated, but you get the idea.

For lunch today we all had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with milk, yogurt, and fresh strawberries.  Most likely, the midday snack will be "Daddy's banana, peach, and strawberry smoothie" (with yogurt, OJ, and cranberry juice too).

For exercise, I get plenty of course (my normal daily run is about 6.5 miles and I do Marine Corps martial arts twice a week).  Katie normally goes for walks and also has a membership at the gym.  The gym here has daycare, though Garrett will be too young for a while.  Katie will have to go in the evenings while I watch the kids.

The kids get lots of exercise.  They run and play, ride their bikes, you name it.  I like seeing them exhausted and tired at the end of a day like that, because that's a good tired.

I'm on a seafood diet. I see food and I eat it! :tongueout: Seriously,I really don't eat junk food, but I do like them Wendy's Hot n Spicy Chicken sandwhiches once inna while. I only eat about once a day...I pack a peanut butter sandwhich to work for lunch and drink water instead of soda pop, and eat a good dinner at night. Yet, I still have an RC or Dr. Pepper here and there. I guess I'm about not to picky. Today,we are cooking out...potato salad, baked beans, steaks and burgers! Not to healthy,I know...but soooo good!

I try to eat right (don't always succeed), but I do like to exercise. I got a magnetic resistance stationary bike and I love it.  You can really burn up some calories with that thing.

I've been drinking a lot of soda for 20 years. I fear soon the consequences will catch up with me.

Eating healthy to me means lettuce on my hamburger! :teddyr: Seriously, I don't eat as much produce as I should, but I do get lots of exercise and try to fill my lunch box with fruit that I can eat while driving.

I have naturally high cholesterol, so I have to be careful about what I eat.  Fortunately I love salads and veggies!  I keep lots of produce around, because my kids will only eat a couple of vegetables cooked, they mostly prefer fruit or raw veggies.  I'm not vegetarian, but I eat that way two days a week at least just for the health benefits.  I just started exercising again after some bad bouts of arthritis, and I have to admit I really missed how good exercise makes you feel.

My main diet weakness is the fact that I can cook just about anything (yes I'm bragging!).  I try to reduce the salt and fat in everything I cook, and it's surprising how good healthy versions of recipes can be.  I like junk food, but only in small amounts.  Instead of sodas I'll make iced green tea, which is really refreshing when it's hot, and I will have a piece of dark chocolate occasionally.

I've been on the South Beach Diet for about 4 years.  I lost 35 lbs and have kept it off.  I also avoid fried foods, fast food in general (no McDonalds in over ten years) and have not had a potato chip in about 13 years.

My wife got off South Beach when she got pregnant with our son.  This past January, she went back on "for real," and she has so far lost nearly 40 lbs.  She has won three separate contests (nearly $1000 and a TV among the prizes) for weight loss since the first of the year.

South Beach is a great "moderation" style diet.  You are not penalized for "cheating;" it's even encouraged - in moderation.  It's the first programmatic diet I ever tried because it is the first one that made medical sense to me.

Andrew, we also eat a lot of fruits and veggies as do the children.  My wife, a pediatrician, often comments that it is a shame that eating healthy is so much more expensive than junk.  It's no wonder we hear so much about children (and adults for that matter) and obesity - bad food is cheap, fast and tastes good.  As to that last, our South Beach compatible recipes are not lacking in taste.  We probably are eating more flavorful stuff than before we stated it.

I need to lose about 30 pounds to get to my ideal weight.

I've been doing pretty good over the last couple of years.  I bought a really nice exercise bike from a friend of mine and I put it in front of the TV in my spare bedroom so I can pop in a movie or watch TV while I ride/sweat away.

I've got a problem though with my left hip that aggravates me sometimes though.

I've also steered away from eating fast food pretty much and I eat at Subway a lot or I'll get  a salad at Wendy's instead of a burger.

High Blood Pressure runs really bad on my Dad's side of the family and mine's been creeping up a bit as I've gotten into my 30's.

You have to watch what you get at subway.  Not everything there is healthy even though it is advertised as such and most people believe it to be that way.  Most of the meat choices contain alot of fat.  You need to pick the lean meats like turkey, ham or chicken.  Moreover to keep it healthy you have to decline mayo and cheese as these will also add to the fat and calories of the sub.

I have just been put on a long overdue diet. It was getting to the point where I was eating out for lunch five times a week, and not getting nearly enough exercise. Ive been trying to eat healthy; for a while, I've been getting salads from a salad bar near work and have stopped putting anything meat or bread related on them (no crutons, pepperoni, etc), though there's actually plenty of vegetable items I like to make up for it (black olives, green peppers, artichokes, etc.). I had been addicted to green tea for a long time now (especially the arizona kind, but I stopped drinking them after I noticed the amount of sugar they contain). My problem is that, if I go hungry for too long, I start feeling weak and get a major headache. I recently discovered cottage cheese; it might sound gross, but its actually really good, and a little of it is very filling. I can buy a small package of the half cc and half fruit for like a dollar and have that for lunch, and it will keep me going for the rest of the day.

Fausto, I don't know if you like yogurt or not, but one of the tricks I've learned for dieting is to eat yogurt with half a cup of Grape Nuts or some other granola cereal mixed in for breakfast every day.  It's filling, and it keeps you going until lunch without wanting to load up on the bad stuff.  And a little meat on a salad isn't bad, if you can get chicken or turkey on there.

I think when I'll get older the whole eating healthy thing will apply more, since I'm fairly lean, and don't need to worry so much about putting on weight [in fact just the opposite can do the trick]  BUT I do tend to eat reasonably healthy anyways, and I don't mean calorie counting or 'can I have the salad' but more just common sense in what I eat.  The guys at work get annoyed at me because I'm always bringing pizzas/burgers/kebab type back for lunch, but I do offset this with the occasional nice 'healthy' meal.

I'd say it helps having a vegetarian girlfriend, but I've been going out recently to a lot of nice vegetarian restaurants every time I feel I need something 'cleansing'.  We have quite a few really nice places around here which do great vegetarian food that just makes you feel good after eating it.  Lentils, roast vegies, tofu and that type of thing are actually quite tasty when cooked right.

With what I do, working on houses and having a farm I sweat out about 3 gallons a day so I eat anything that doesn't eat me first.

I just had slow churned strawberry/chocolate/vanilla swirl frozen yogurt. It's just as tasty as ice cream.

I have a very restricted diet due to some health problems.  Sometimes I just say the funk with it and eat a bacon cheeseburger (with a Benadryl chaser).
