I am trying to find a short film shown on either HBO or Showtime years and years ago. Maybe someone will remember? It's been a good 15+ years since I saw it, so the chances may be slim...
This is from the era when HBO (which is the channel I'm almost certain it was on) used to fill the gaps between movies with, among other things, short films. Interesting independent productions, marketed through the channel, I guess. I'll attempt to describe.
A guy gets a letter to come to an office for a job interview. When he shows up, the office is empty. He pokes around looking for someone, and winds up in a computer room - complete with large, pre-desktop computers with huge tape reels. Now, it may be that some of the stuff I remember happened before the interviewee shows up at the office, but much of the action of the film is stop-action (same as how claymation is done), with the reels of tape unwinding themselves into piles which sort of "morph" into different shapes. They follow the guy around the office and torment and tease him. Ultimately the poor interviewee is murdered by the tape. It morphs into a vague thing which can type, and sends out another letter to a job applicant/victim at the end of the film.
Probably between 5 and 10 minutes long, and not incredible production value though clean enough. And funny, in a dark-humor way.
I think this may be it.
