Title: What is your favorite style/type of video games to play?
Post by: Torgo on August 01, 2007, 03:16:47 PM
I've always liked 2-D shooters the best.  Games like the Gradius, Darius, Thunder Force and R-Type series have always been my favorite style of games to play.  I like the fact that these games can be picked up for only about 10 minutes or so for a blast of pure twitch era gameplay that nothing else really matches IMO.

My 2nd favorite type of games would probably be old school RPG's like Lunar, Chrono Trigger, SNES era Final Fantasy and Phantasy star.

My top two games of all time are Elder Scrolls III and IV:  MORROWIND  and OBLIVION -  huge worlds, freedom of action, cool monsters, and interesting storylines, and numerous sidequests and guild quests you can enjoy, as well as a wide variety of characters you can play.  I also enjoyed Warcraft III, although the custom scenarios on that game are more fun than the main storyline!

On the console I play what ever my kids want me to play with them, even if I hate it. But given the choice I must admit I like Zelda and Mario, call me old school.

On the computer it pretty Civilization III or IV with mods, on rare occasions I'll play Civ II.

If I had to rate my favorites I'd say first person shooters are up there.   I also enjoy a good fighting game like MK, SF and so on.  Lately I have been getting more into the interactive games like Guitar Hero.

I am a huge retro-80s fan though and whenever I come across vintage games from in an arcade I usually freak out.  They're almost like comfort food to me.

I've always liked the overview type of strategy games, stuff like "Star Control II" and also "Starcraft."

This is what I have been playing religiously since December '06.
It is the best WW2 FPS shooter I've ever played.

Call of Duty 3

It really depends on what I am in the mood for.  Someday I just want to play racing games, others it is just fighting, and someday's I just want to play some arcade games and have some real fun.

About those side scrolling shooters...

I used to play those all the time when I was a kid and still like a few of them.

Remember U.N. Squadron (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.N._Squadron)?
I used to ride my bike down to the local convenience store where they had an arcade machine with that game.
I dumped countless quarters into it.

I always been a fan of action/adventure games and action RPGs.  Anything that can gets me real involved in the gameplay.  And since Halo, I've bought a few FPSs too.

I'm a huge fan of the FPS genre.  That's mainly what I play.  Usually a bunch of Half-Life/Half-Life 2 mods like Brain Bread, Counter Strike Source, The Professionals, Day Of Defeat Source.  I also play Quake 4 (Can't wait for Enemy Territory: Quake Wars!).  Anything that has a ton of guns and explosions is right up my alley.

I also love RTS games.  I've always been a big fan of the Warcraft series of games and still play Warcraft 3 on occasion.  I also play a good bit of Empire Earth II.  I love the fact if you are good enough, you can have tanks and air strike capabilities while your opponent only has sword/sandal type technology.

Here lately, I've been playing a good bit of World Of Warcraft.  I play it on occasion and then will cancel my account for a few months.  I get easily sick of the game, and the people who play it but I keep coming back for some unknown reason.

I like non-fantasy RPG games and first person shooters best.  I also started playing with some tactics games, lately I went through Freedom Force 1 and 2, I found them for 2.99 each!!

Yeah, that's a Capcom shooter that came out arcades and then it was ported to the SNES pretty faithfully (though there was some slowdown not found in the arcade version).  A really tough game but I like the option of how you can power up your ships with earnings from the levels that you pillage through.

Great graphics as well.

Another one of my favorite all time side scrolling shooters is Thunder Force 4 (a.k.a. Lightening Force) on the Sega Genesis.

I also slightly prefer side scrolling shooters to vertical shooters though my favorite vertical shooter is probably Raiden 2.

I like RPG's and games that involve exploring and puzzle solving, with a little action thrown in, like the Zelda, Resident Evil and Tomb Raider games. The last RPG I played was Fable for the X-Box. It was fun, but way too easy. I so want a X-Box 360 so I can play the latest Elder Scrolls game, but I know I will check out from reality if I get too caught up in it.

Torgo,

You ever played Ikaruga?

I'm tellin you, this is one of the best space shooters of all time.  I seem to gravitate towards the "bullet-hell" type of shumps and this one is the king of them all.  I have a copy for my Dreamcast and it's probably the most played game I have for that system.  It is controller-chunkingly hard though.
Title: Re: What is your favorite style/type of video games to play?

A friend of mine who has a Gamecube has Ikaruga and while it's made by one of my favorite game developers of all time (Treasure), I just couldn't get into it.

Shooters recently, moreso vertical shooters, have gone towards that bullet hell type of gameplay and while I like extremely hectic shooters, it gets to be a bit much for me at times.

The Giga Wings games on the Dreamcast were kind of like this as well.

The most difficult shooter that I've played of the side scrolling variety is probably Metal Black.

I had played this in arcades back around 1991 and they just re-released it as part of the Taito Legends 2 compilation that came out this month on the PS2 (for only 14.99 I might add for 39 games!).

This game makes R-Type look like a cake walk in comparison.

They also included Darius Gaiden on that new Taito Legends 2 compilation disc.  I actually prefer this one over the subsequent 3d entry G. Darius.  I've always loved the fish/aquatic themes that drive these horizontal shooters.   Hard as hell, but very enjoyable.

I tend to gravitate towards third-person point-and-click adventures games, both new and old. Maniac Mansion, Kings Quest -- stuff of that nature. Thanks to programs like AGS, people are still cranking these things out left and right.

The Secret of Monkey Island is one of my absolute favorites.

I tried out the PS1 version of Myst one time but it didn't go anything at all for me.  A friend of mine really into point/click games lent me his copy.

There are two great things I've noticed about owning a Wii:

(1) People I know who either haven't played video games in 20 years or have never played video games at all cannot resist Wii Sports.

(2) There are few things more entertaining that watching friends and family members with a competitive streak play the boxing and tennis games for the aforementioned spazz attacks.  :teddyr:

I've discovered over the last few years that I no longer have the attention span to play most video games. I used to love the RPGs, but now I can't seem to play them for more than a few days before something shiny catches my interest. The last one I got into was Dragon Quest VIII on PS2.

I dig the side-scrolling shooters, but tend to gravitate more toward character titles like Contra and Metal Slug more than vehicle based, though I did have a roll of quarters in my pocket for this old 1984 machine at my fiancee's former place of business. I became a complete bastard at that thing by the time she quit the job and I wasn't allowed to go back...

Fighting games are okay, but I never got too hardcore into the 3D fighters. As such, the last fighting game that got me hooked enough to unlock EVERYTHING in the game was Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 back on Dreamcast.

Sports titles rarely catch my interest, but I'll always have a field-goal sized place in my heart for the original NFL 2K, also on the Dreamcast. I also dig Wii Sports because it somehow accomplishes so much fun for being a glorified hardware demo.

I can only enjoy racing games if there are weapons or massive crashes involved, so games like Gran Turismo never appealed to me, while the Mario Kart and Burnout games always stole large chunks of my life from me.

First person shooters always wear thin on me after a while too, especially since very little seems to change in them beyond hardware and minor variations in the story: "You are (generic hero) and you need to (generic mission) by shooting an army of (generic villains) using your vast armory of (generic weapons) to save the (generic person/planet/object in need of rescue)!". My favorite would have to be the Neo Geo first person "slasher" game Crossed Swords.

I'd probably have to go with either the beat 'em ups (Double Dragon, Final Fight, King of Dragons, Eightman, X-Men, Golden Axe, Splatterhouse, Dead Rising, etc.) or the adventure/platformers (Super Mario, Zelda, Sonic, Ratchet & Clank, etc.) if I could only have one genre of games on a deserted island... though a desserted island would be so much better...  :teddyr:

I finished Dragon Quest VIII and found everything including the extra quest after you initially beat the game.  I also beat Final Fantasy XII as well. Each game took me about 100 hours to beat and find everything.  I wasn't playing any other games during that long stretch which is the only reason why I was able to devote that much time to playing those when at home.  But anymore, I just want a quick burst of pure gameplay and old school shooters and run/gun type games like Metal Slug are perfect for that anytime.

QuoteI dig the side-scrolling shooters, but tend to gravitate more toward character titles like Contra and Metal Slug more than vehicle based, though I did have a roll of quarters in my pocket for this old 1984 machine at my fiancee's former place of business. If you like Metal Slug a lot you really need to pick up the Metal Slug Anthology for the PS2.  Some people have complained about lag in the controls, but I haven't had any issues with it. I really wish that Konami would get off their duff and release a massive compilation disc of all of their classic games.

QuoteFighting games are okay, but I never got too hardcore into the 3D fighters. As such, the last fighting game that got me hooked enough to unlock EVERYTHING in the game was Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 back on Dreamcast.

My favorite fighting game of all time is Street Fighter Alpha 3 on the Dreamcast.  I'm not that big into 3D fighters though I have always loved the Soul Caliber series as I have always felt that weapons based fighting has always translated much better to 3D than traditional fisticuffs type fighting.

QuoteSports titles rarely catch my interest, but I'll always have a field-goal sized place in my heart for the original NFL 2K, also on the Dreamcast. I also dig Wii Sports because it somehow accomplishes so much fun for being a glorified hardware demo.

The Dreamcast football games are some of my favorite as well.  One thing I feel that no one has really gotten right on any of the next gen systems from PS2 on up is basketball.

QuoteI can only enjoy racing games if there are weapons or massive crashes involved, so games like Gran Turismo never appealed to me, while the Mario Kart and Burnout games always stole large chunks of my life from me.

My favorite racing game of all time is Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 on the PS2.     I also love playing 4 players on Mario Kart. Talk about a great party game.   Burnout is cool but the novelty of it wears off kind of fast for me personally.

QuoteFirst person shooters always wear thin on me after a while too, especially since very little seems to change in them beyond hardware and minor variations in the story: "You are (generic hero) and you need to (generic mission) by shooting an army of (generic villains) using your vast armory of (generic weapons) to save the (generic person/planet/object in need of rescue)!". .
Crosssed Swords was a fun game.  I'm a huge Neo Geo fan mostly for their shooters like Last Resort and Pulsar.  Not to forget the awesome King of Fighters games.  I've never been that much into first person shooters.  I liked Doom when it originally came out but that's about it.  Goldeneye on the N64 was great if you were playing multiplayer as was Perfect Dark.

QuoteI'd probably have to go with either the beat 'em ups (Double Dragon, Final Fight, King of Dragons, Eightman, X-Men, Golden Axe, Splatterhouse, Dead Rising, etc.) or the adventure/platformers (Super Mario, Zelda, Sonic, Ratchet & Clank, etc.) if I could only have one genre of games on a deserted island... though a desserted island would be so much better...  :teddyr:

Capcom Classics Collection 2 has a ton of their great beat em ups on it like King of Dragons & Knights of the Round.
It's also got a lot of great shooters on it as well as an arcade perfect port of Strider.

Did any of you ever own a Sega CD?
Back in 1993 at the age of 19, I did, and I spent several hundred dollars on games for it.

Remember the game that came packaged with it called Sewer Shark (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sewer_Shark)?
I spent countless hours playing that game.

And check this out...
I found this Sewer Shark intro video on Youtube.
It still holds up well after all these years!

Thank Jesus for inventing the emulator, cuz all three of those games are f'ing classics

And I remember the SegaCD being the system that everybody wanted to get because it had the "naughty" Dana Plato game Night Trap. I also remember the only game I ever actually saw on store shelves were Barkley: Shut Up and Jam! and that Make Your Own Music Video disc for C&C Music Factory... heh heh.

Does anyone remember Sega Channel?

My friends used to have that, and I used to love playing it.  I liked Earthworm Jim, Ballz (I think that's it.  It's a fighting game, but the characters are made of various sized multicolored balls), Comix Zone, and a few others.

Sonic was great on the old Sega, as well as Mortal Kombat.  I used to also like this one X-Men game for it as well, and the old NHL game, from like, 1993.  I loved Sega, even though I never actually had it.

I had NES, and used to rock the BattleToads, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game, Blades of Steel, Back To The Future, and American Gladiator games for it.  I loved being a kid.

The neat aspect is that while traversing through the levels you can activate these kind of sign things that will either take the level you're in back into the past or into the future.  Sometimes, you need to go back and forth between them to get past obstacles in later levels.    The way they change the look of each of the levels depending on if you go back or forwards in time is really cool.

It sounds kind of confusing, but it actually work really well.  The only small gripe I have about the Gamecube version is that the control doesn't seem to be quite as dead on as the Sega CD version, but it's still good.

I should mention however that my favorite Sonic game to date is part 3.
