Title: JUDGE DREDD
Post by: KYGOTC on August 04, 2007, 03:27:14 PM
Based on the British comic, JUDGE DREDD stars salvester stalone (SPELLING ERROR! i know!) and Rob Shnider as his goofy spineless tag along. I never read the comics, so i dont know how it compares, but the special effects were good, but the writing sucked.

"b***h!"
"Thats JUDGE b***h!"

The one thing that really threw my off of this movie was the massive pile of goofy accents. Of course there was stalone, then the main villian had some sorta accent where he couldnt pronounce ....(ug, i feel stupid) ya know, what are all the letters that are'nt vowels? ....CONSONENTS! yea. He had trouble with those. actually there were 2 guys like that, plus some asian lady who pronounced her Ls as Rs and threw in a W here and there. But one thing that saved it for me was whenever Judge Dredd got all screamy, stalone does that thing where his whole mouth moves to the right side of his face. Cracked me up every time.

Even though I was a comic collecting maniac around the time this film came out, the Judge Dredd comics were ones I never got around to reading. To this day I have yet to read any. As for this film, I think I saw it in the theater on opening day. I thought visually it looked great (mostly), but as you said, the writing was rather weak. I think Stallone was the wrong choice for the role, though Diane Lane was hot as judge Hershey. Since I find something to like in almost any genre film, I added this one to the DVD collection when I saw it for 5 bucks somewhere. I don't know why I bothered, as the film seems to pop up on cable constantly.

I actually like this movie. I didn't like it when I first saw it, but it has grown on me on repeat viewings. As was said before, it has great visuals and great production values. It also has that unintentional funny-ness that you normally see in cheap B movies. And I even like Stallone as Judge Dredd.

HIM we have something we agree on ... I really like Judge Dredd and I found the comic book collection in hard back at a hole on the wall book store in 2 vols. at the tune of $3 each. Nice books too, still haven't read them yet though.

I agree as well, this film is a bit better than it usually gets credit for.  While Rob Schneider grates(and fast!)in that prototypical sidekick role, he does have a few great scenes with Stallone.  Stallone himself knows pretty well not to take it too seriously...it feels to me like he pulls an 'Adam West' and risks deadpanning it and succeeds for most part.

I can't really turn my back on a film with some decent time for Jurgen Prochnow and Max von Sydow.  Even Scott Wilson has an uncredited cameo.

:bouncegiggle: Titter-worthy is the fact that, in order to play up the fact that Rico and Dread are supposed to cloned from the same sack of doorknobs, they opted to try to make Armand Assante share some physical traits with Stallone...notably his teeth.  Needless to say this makes for some tough scenes for Assante.  I liked his volatile and unpredictably nasty behavior and it's ironic that they can still have a somewhat menacing villain...who happens to deliver his lines with a slight nod to Bugs Bunny.

This film seems to be the flipside of the coin with DEMOLITION MAN.  That film played with Stallone's traditional film persona in a much more successful manner. Though it feels(using my unofficial production quality standard measuring stick) that DREAD would predate it, DEMOLITION MAN is actually two years earlier.  Funny, as it perceptibly skewers the lunatic machismo sensibilities that fuel JUDGE DREAD.

ps... Do yourself a little favor for poops and giggles - go type Judge Dread into the search field at IMDb and see what pops up(without even a list of options, no less!).  Double Plus Ridiuclous!

Guess somebody isn't a big fan.
I always wanted to see this movie despite what people have said.

D'oh!  :bluesad:  What an idiot I am.  In my haste I never even realized I was spelling the name D-R-E-A-D. I even did it in my oh-so-clever ps above!

How embarrassing.

My Judge Dredd graphic novel was the cross over one that they did where Judge Dredd showed up in Gotham and (sort of ) teamed up with Batman.  It was really cool and I think it could make a fantstic movie if done correctly.

As for the Judge Dredd movie, I've seen much better but I've also seen far worse. Visually, they really did a great job with this one.
