Title: Flash Gordon: Saviour of the Universe Edition
Post by: Ash on August 10, 2007, 01:46:36 AM
I must've had my head up my a** lately to not have heard about this new release of one of the coolest movies ever...Flash Gordon.

Just a few days ago, the Flash Gordon: Saviour of the Universe Edition DVD was released.
I learned about it from one my Myspace friends who posted a piece about it on his blog.

This looks really cool!
Apparently, it comes with some new special features.
And if you purchase it at Best Buy, it comes with two cool artcards.
One of them is a picture of Ming pointing at you with the words, "Ming Wants You!" written on it.

Here's a pic of the cover:

Here's a pic of the reverse side:

-----------------------------------------------

I think I may have to make an unscheduled stop at Best Buy this weekend and pick this baby up!
I own Flash Gordon on VHS but I've wanted to upgrade it to DVD for awhile now.

What do you think?

I bought that a few days ago, but I haven't opened it yet.

Universal left a lot of the cool stuff like the commentary tracks from the Region 2 DVD off of the new Region 1 release.

But, it's still finally available in anamorphic widescreen here in the US and from the reviews that I've read the US edition actually beats all others in terms of picture quality.

This movie always gets chopped up something fierce on TV. I don't think I've seen it uncut since I saw it in the theater in 1980! So when I heard this was coming out, I pre-ordered as soon as I could. It should arrive very soon.

Like Torgo said, it ain't exactly a "saviour of the universe edition" in my eyes.

This is one of the few movies that I like so much as to be interested in the commentary.  I have the original Region 1 DVD, but will probably get this one just for the enhanced picture.  I do like the original cover artwork better; that might be a case of "it is what I am used to."

That is one of the big reasons I was so happy about the new DVD.  Copies of the same one I have were going for $100 and that is insane.  Once copies of an out of print DVD are going for that much, we need another release.  I can say the same about a couple of DVDs that are out there.  "Greaser's Palace" and the "Fist of the North Star" movie are two that jump to mind.

I'm definitely going to be picking this up because as Andrew already said, the older DVD was out of print and the prices that it had been going for were outrageous.

I just wish they had just taken all of the extras from the Region 2 release and transplanted them to the Region 1 anamorphic widescreen release.

But that's Universal for you, just look at what they did with the Hot Fuzz R1 DVD release.

Well I have the original release, guess this just undercut it's value ... but I was never going to sell it anyway and I've been offered an even $100 for it.
