Title: Garth Marenghi's Darkplace
Post by: Jason on August 18, 2007, 02:47:34 PM
Anyone ever seen this?

It's been a long while since I laughed so hard at a TV show - and they say British comedy is dead...

I became familiar with it after watching "The IT Crowd" and immediately searching out Richard Ayoade's other works.

The show is hilarious.  It's the exact type of thing that I would have seen in the early 90s on the local PBS station which showed quite a few 80s British shows, both horror and drama.  Every episode in the series was quite good with the exception of the eyeball-baby-monster-thing.  Not sure what it was about that episode, but it was a serious disappointment.

As mentioned before, Richard Ayoade is quite possibly the best thing about the show as Dean Learner.  Apparently he went on to have a talkshow based around that character but I have yet to see any of it.

Yeah, don't know what was up with that 'eyechild' episode, I thought it was just me that didn't really like it. The one with the chase scene on the bicycles cracks me up every time though.

I've not seen anything else revolving around the Dean Learner character, but I'll check that out.

Darkplace is excellent...

the spin-off chatshow "Man To Man with Dean Learner" was not very good IMO

look for AD/BC on youtube. it's a spoof musical about jesus made by the same people who did darkplace - the guy who played Todd Rivers is the star - plus some other people, it's funny

Speaking of that guy (I can't remember his name), has anyone here seen The Mighty Boosh? He's in that, and I absolutely love that show. It's like Lewis Carroll on acid sometimes.

Oh this is a great show.  British comedy certainly isn't dead.  In fact there's been a spat of excellent shows lately, which I class this one as one of my personal favourites.

"The doors of dark place were open. Not the literal doors to the building, most of which were closed, but evil doors, dark doors, doors to the beyond, doors that were hard to shut because they were abstract and didnt have handles. They were more like portals really. From this day on I had to fight these forces of darkness and deal with day to day stress of admin."

This show is hillarious. I have to get the dvd, if it ever got released here.

i watched it when it was originially on channel 4 and it is awesome. still haven't seen man to man with dean learner but he is the funniest character on it, he has parodical bad acting nailed perfect on darkplace.

the "one track lover" vid makes the whole series worthwhile, besides it being a very apt parody of low-budget sci-fi shows.

I first discovered Darkplace about 2 years ago when Sci-Fi was showing it... the show is amazing!!!  I honestly think it's the funniest thing television ever produced... not the "best", but definitely the "funniest.  I love how obvious it is that Garth is writing for all of the characters, and I love when they all praise Rick, despite its shallowness.  My two favorite lines of the entire series are first, when Sanchez says, "I wish I were more handsome like Dagless!"  And then when the kid in the hospital says, "They work you too hard here, Rick!  They aught to pay you a heroes wages!"  Brilliant!!!  This show is just perfect!!!

If you have never seen this show, check it out on YouTube.  All 6 episodes are available in their entirety!
