This movie is included in Mill Creek's NIGHT SCREAMS 50 MOVIE PACK
This is easily one of worst movies ever made. It has the look and feel of an Andy Milligan film and would make an excellent double feature with MANOS: THE HANDS OF FATE.
The movie begins with a shipwreck (the ship is clearly a toy boat). The ship's captain and a guy named Mr. Fallon (actor Russ Harvey, who doesn't even attempt to act . . . he just reads his lines in a very aggravating rhythm . . . he says a few words, pauses, says a few more words, pauses, says a few more words . . . ) wash ashore and end up in the castle of Count Lorente DeSade.
DeSade is visited by the devil (the visual effect for this consists of using the film negative . . . see picture above). The devil scares him a little (he even uses a big, stuffed spider) and then leaves.
DeSade has a tall, black servant with white hair (Dennis Rodman's inspiration, perhaps?) When DeSade gets mad, he slaps his servant back and forth across the face several times. It is obvious that he isn't even coming close to touching the guy, but we hear "slap, slap, slap, slap" on the soundtrack.
Other odd cast members include a former nurse named Cassandra, a young mute woman named Ann who had been assaulted by pirates, and DeSade's wife . . . she has leprosy and lurks around in the basement.
There are a few lame torture scenes (mostly people lying on the rack) but that's about the extent of the "harrow" (unless you consider watching this movie to be a harrowing ordeal).
The sets and costumes are super cheap, the acting is all bad (but Russ Harvey is the worst), and much of the dialogue is pointless and hilarious. For instance, near the beginning when the captain and Fallon get shipwrecked, there is a scene in which they are cooking fish over a camp fire. Fallon tells the captain that he doesn't like fish very much and would prefer to eat meat the next day. The captain reminds him that they should concentrate their efforts on finding a way off the island rather than whether they will eat fish or game. There are many more instances of dumb dialogue throughout the movie.
So, as bad as it is, you MUST see it. This is now officially in my "Top 10 Worst" list.
That NIGHT SCREAMS collection is packed with some real howlers, and an Andy Milligan film, too!
Raffine:
Yes! And, coincidentally, I am watching Andy Milligan's CARNAGE at this very moment and will probably post some comments about it later.
DUNGEON OF HARROW (1962) - This was a terrible film. I traded it in for another DVD.
It's ok if you get it in a 50 pack. I think I paid about $6.00 for an oldies.com copy.
