Title: Black Hole: The SciFi Channel Original
Post by: ghouck on September 02, 2007, 12:29:51 PM
I watched it last night, they promoted it like it was more like a natural disaster/doomsday device run amok movie, , , it was essensially a monster movie. Very little of the movie made the phenomena anything like a real black hole, it seemed to me like they threw in the whole monster thing to justity not realling knowing or understanding WHAT a black hole is. Judd nelson didn't do that terrible of a job, considering what he had to work with, I didn't even recognize him for a while into the movie. He's gotten old and lost what little charm he had.
Anyways, the movie has the typical parts of just about every sci-fi original: A disaster, a top-level person (in this case a general) that wants to nuke it, (which is not only the worst thing that can be done, but seemingly the ONLY thing generals know how to do). You of course have the subordinate that is willing to follow the advice of people that know what is going on, and those are the ones that save the world. Add to it the family to be saved, the ex-spouse that won't listen to reason.
Just like so many other Sci-fi originals, the word "uniform", in "military uniform" means nothing, since every member of the military wears something different than the others (dig the typiclageneral wearing all his awards and markmanship badges on his BDUs).

I'd give it 3 slimes, maybe less, and I doubt I'll intentionally watch it again.

p.s. I did get a laught out of the idea of a "small" black hole, which is totally obsurd, it just doesn't work that way. . .

Well, naturally occurring black holes are usually the result of collapsing stars and are thus quite big, but theoretically, any quantity of matter that is sufficiently compressed will become a black hole. I just don't see our civilization possessing the ability to accomplish such a feat any time soon (at least not for a black hole that would last for longer than a few nanoseconds). Was the black hole in the film supposed to have been created by humans or occur naturally?

They created one with an atom smasher. As far as gravitational pull, it started out just causing a bit of a breeze at first. It was quite funny, like something you would see on Futurama.

It was also funny that their black hole was kinda yellow, , ,I didn't expect THAT.

True, but that gravitational pull of a black hole comes from it's mass, so if we collapsed the moon into a point of singularity, it would still onlyt have the gravitational pull of the moon (which is not enough to keep the particles of it from repelling each other and expanding). THIS black hole didn't get more massive as it sucked in matter, it got more massive when some weird monster sucked up electricity. It was strange. . .
