Title: Anyone seen Westworld?
Post by: BTM on September 13, 2007, 06:48:36 PM
I was putting A Boy and His Dog in my queue on Netflix when this film came up in the "Other movies you might like section."  Never heard of it before, but I'm told it's directed by Michael Critchon (yeah, the Jurassic Park author.)

Summary:

"An excursion to a futuristic "Fantasy Island" turns deadly for two wealthy tourists (Richard Benjamin, James Brolin) in Michael Crichton's sci-fi thriller. Seeking cowboy adventures in the island's Westworld sector, the two enter a high-tech nightmare controlled by a ruthless robotic gunslinger (a chillingly creepy Yul Brynner). Surrounded by malfunctioning Wild West androids, the terrified adventure seekers get more than their money's worth."

Has anyone seen this?  Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Yes I've seen it.

I found it to be suspenseful in a lot of parts, especially the big chaotic climax. These movies where "seemingly-foolproof human-servant-relationships go wrong" (Other examples include CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES) really get me in a weird spot.

At first I thought it would be more thoughtful SOYLENT GREEN type thriller, kept thinking the robots would turn out to be cyborged real people (along the lines of the sequel, ironically), or feeling replicant-types or something. TERMINATOR precursor seemed too obvious from what I had heard about it at the time.

Yeah!  I've got this DVD!  I like it...it's kind of a Jurassic Park type of movie.  (I know it's the same author).  Yul Brenner gives his all in the part of the cyborg cowboy.  It's the same template that Arnold would use in the Terminator series.  It's a little bit dated but the theme still resonates today.

This is a very good movie.  I owned a VHS copy and then upgraded to DVD . . . so it's one of (many) movie that I've purchased twice.

Have I seen WESTWORLD?  Does a fat girl fart ??? Oh!  I'm stealin' Bela's line !!  :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle:

WESTWORLD must be highly recommended.  It's funny, fascinating, and Yul Brynner does indeed deliver a very creepy performance!  I think this thread belongs in the GOOD MOVIES section, though.

Westworld's a great flick.     It creeped me out as a child. I think I was 7 the 1st time I saw it.

I was probably around that age, too.  It was on one of the UHF afternoon movies.  The announcer said it had robots in it and that was all I needed to hear.  Awesome movie.

It's been a while now, but I remember enjoying it. That part at the end were you think Yul is finally dead, only to have him pull his head up for a second with his face missing... :buggedout:

Not the same scene but in the neighborhood.

Yeah, I have thoughts.  This belongs in the GOOD movies forum, for one thing.  I don't know anyone who saw it when it first came out who didn't come away deeply disturbed and subtly changed in a way they couldn't easily describe.

I have one word for you, chumly:  DRAW.  No, wait, I mean:  WATCH.

Have I seen it? I have the DVD.

Those two don't usually go together. I have too many dvds in my collection I have yet to watch due to time, but I spend my money on them saying to myself 'this looks cool, I have to watch this!'

One of the longest ones I have is a snap purchase of Dead and Buried which I think I've had for 4 years and have yet to watch it.  I keep looking at it, thinking, this looks like a movie I can watch, yet I keep getting distracted by re-watching episodes of Stargate, Firefly, or any number of dvds I've seen many times before.  I suppose sometimes I just need to switch the brain off and just watch something familiar...

As for Westworld, I haven't seen it myself, but have been meaning to for a while...

Yes, I have. I actually saw "Futureworld," which I saw in the theater, before I saw "Westworld," which I saw on television. "Futureworld" is not a bad or a "bad" film, but "Westworld" is the superior film.

Westworld a good film, that's been copied in it's themes and plot many times since, probably seems a bit dated now, the atmosphere and Brynner are what make it work.

Futureworld is a very by the numbers, sci-fi thriller/conspiracy flick you've seen done countless times already. Almost seems like a TV movie due to the look, budget and feel of it; except for some language (and a bird being flipped), starring Peter Fonda while he was still a big box office draw, and the dream sequence with Brynner (which feels tacked on). Wonder how much they paid him and how long it took to do that part?

Westworld is a movie that is worth watching, what makes it work for me is Yul Brenner's performance as a homicidal robot. One thing I felt about this movie is that in some small way the humans, because of their attitude toward, and treatment of the robots somehow deserve what happens to them.

Seems you suffer from DVD'itist to many DVD's to remember what you've got .... I suffer from this too. I'll do a re-organize and discover I've got 2 copies of something and one time 3 or a discovery I have something I didn't know I had.

old age is hell.

That's the problem; I'm 23...  If that means it gets worse when I'm older, I'm right royal screwed...

To be fair I have hundreds of movies [the downside to being a cinema studies major at uni] but still...

WESTWORLD is a classic 70's film if you grew up during the time. You have to like it. It was too cool.

You might be dissapointed in A BOY AND HIS DOG.

I liked it, but didn't think it was great.  Of course, I just watched it a few years ago, so the full force of its age was hitting me.

For every Yul Brynner scene, there were other long scenes of characters cavorting in ways I didn't care about.  I know them having a good time at the amusement park was integral to the later destruction, but it didn't make it more entertaining to watch.

I will say that a young James Brolin looks surprisingly like a young Christian Bale.
