Has anybody seen the classic 1968 film Head, starring the Monkees? It pretty much is a stream of conciousness type flick, with no overall plot at all. Pretty much like, musical numbers interspersed with acting bits from different genres, like comedy, romance, westerns, etc.
I'd say check it out if you can, if for any reason, to see the Monkees in the same movie as Jack Nicholson, Annette Funnicello, Frank Zappa, Teri Garr, and Sonny Liston.
By any chance, does anyone know if it's available on dvd? I can't find it anywhere.
I saw this movie about 20 years ago . . . I'm not sure if I saw it on HBO or Showtime or another movie channel or if it was a VHS tape. I have also looked for it on DVD and to my knowledge it is unavailable. However, I do have all of the Monkees' TV episodes on DVD . . .
I saw new copies for sale today at Cheapo, a huge new and used music and video store here in the Twin Cities. I suppose they're just old stock that hasn't sold. Head seems to go in and out of print every few years.
So I guess I'd suggest browsing in whatever is the hugest, non-national music and video store in your area.
Actually, I just found it on Django:

I'm assuming it's not on backorder or anything.

Thanks. I'll have to get it.
saw this on tv about 5-6 yrs ago. weird film. no plot at all, just sequences of bizzare events, the one I remember is one of them in a 6ft hole in the earth wearing american football gear, bashing himself against the sides of the hole for about 5 minutes. clearly, no drugs were involved
And Timothy Carey, Abraham Sofaer, Vito Scotti, Percy Helton, Ray Nitschke, and Victor Mature.
I saw it when it was first released to theaters.
I hope they put back the best joke in the film. The one where they blow up the Coke machine. That had me LOL!, when I saw it in the theater.
When I tell people of this, they simply look at me, shrug their shoulders and say I have too much time on my hands.
Apparently it's obscure or something. I've only seen it twice. But I gotta say, I liked it.
It's a favortie of mine for the splendid mess that it is. The producers trying to kill the group off, the band trying to reinvent themselves all with the same film, and add drugs to the mix. Love the guys playing up their personas to the hilt.
Some great lines and odd moments, doesn't add up to much. The message is obvious about being the puppets of the powers that be, but would a successful group try anything like it now? Especially when trying to reach the very people who hated them in the first place.
Very much an artifact of it's time, but a cool one.
It's been a while since I've seen it. I think the last time that I saw it was when VH1 aired it. I never cared for the Monkees that much but the movie is interesting to say the least. :tongueout:
I'm a fan of the Monkees. I guess being born in the '80s with them all over MTV did it. But I watched this at like, 1AM when American Movie Classics had "Psychedelic" week or something. All I could muster was like, "What the f*** were they on?"
