Seeing as how someone did a worst cover songs post, I might as well do a best cover song post.
My favorites are Cradle Of Filths cover of "Hallowed be thy Name", Dead Kennedys "Viva Las Vegas", AFI's "Demonmania", Marilyn Manson's "I put a spell on you."
Some favorites:
Walk this Way by Run DMC/Aerosmith
Word Up by Korn
Hong Kong Phooey by Sublime
Spider-Man by The Ramones
Higher Ground by Red Hot Chili Peppers
Love Rollercoaster by Red Hot Chili Peppers
Boogieman by White Zombie
You Really Got Me by Van Halen
There's a couple others, but I like them the most.
"Dissident Aggressor" by Slayer (originally done by Judas Priest)
"Dancing in the Streets" by Van Halen
Marilyn Manson's Personal Jesus
"Oh, Pretty Woman" (Van Halen cover)
"Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" (Revolting Cocks cover)
And of course this.

You're so welcome!
DAN HICKS wrote a song and recorded it with DAN HICKS & HIS HOT LICKS "I Scare Myself" (it's on Striking It Rich) which was covered a decade later by THOMAS DOLBY on his second full album, The Flat Earth. It's a good song, fully realized by HICKS but completely humorous in his hands, and transformed into a forlorn observation with a heartbreakingly subtle late-night arrangement that haunts dreams... THOMAS DOLBY is a very talented songwriter, but a superb interpreter....I love that cover, probably my favorite, can't recommend The Flat Earth enough (it's out of print stateside... )
Doro Pesch's version of Whiter Shade of Pale is a good one for starters. Then there's Glenn Tipton's cover of Paint it Black.
Metallica did a great cover of Diamond Head's Helpless on the Garage Days EP. They really butchered Thin Lizzy's Whiskey In The Jar, though.
"Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon" by Urge Overkill
Thin Lizzy's "Whiskey in a Jar" is itself a cover of an old Irish folk song. I haven't heard their version but my favorite rendition is by a NY bar band called Barleyjuice, who seem to be channeling the Pogues at their peak.
Jazz singer Cassandra Wilson takes the Monkee's poppy "Last Train to Clarksville" and changes it into a sultry, sexy ballad. Quite an accomplishment.
I like anything written by U2 better as a cover. Dale Ann Bradley's bluegrass version of "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," Johnny Cash's "One," and Cassandra Wilson (again) doing "Love is Blindness."
Hard to believe no one mentioned Sid Vicious' "My Way" yet....
And speaking of the Sex Pistols, an honorable mention goes to the version of "Johhny B. Goode" where Rotten forgets the lyrics, segues into "Roadrunner" instead, and ends the cut with "Does anybody know any other f***in' Beatles songs we can do?"
A few come to mind...
"Got to Get You into My Life" by Earth, Wind, and Fire
Michael Buble's recent cover of the Spider-Man theme
Mama Green's "Drift Away"
Nightwish's "Phantom of the Opera"
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes has an entire library of interesting covers.
The Fantasy Mist rendition of Flogging Molly's Worst Day Since Yesterday and Alice Cooper's Ballad of Dwight Frye
I can't believe I forgot Testament's cover of "Nobody's Fault" (Aerosmith). Great, great cover.
No one will ever be able to top this version of Gloria Gaynor's disco hit "I Will Survive".

Hey AllHallows
You can get Flat Earth from www.cduniverse.com They're selling it for US $9.79. They have it on backorder, but I guess you could put your name on the list.

Thanks,
Killer Bees, I have that CD. I am into recordings still, a longtime (long ago) LP buyer, and now buy CDs too often, including imports and used. I have a stack of about 20 unopened, some have remained sealed for years! I'm not exactly crazed, but I'm really into my music.

Roger that, but you have me intrigued now. I think I'll put my name on the list to by the CD. I used to love Thomas Dolby in the 80s.
Some more songs to add to my list all by Tori Amos:
Love Song (The Cure)
Losing My Religion (REM)
Do It Again (Steely Dan) This one is completely brilliant
Famous Blue Raincoat (Leonard Cohen)
A Case Of You (Joni Mitchell)
I'm not a fan
at all of Joni Mitchell and I heard Tori's version first, so I just love the song. I've since heard Joni do it and I couldn't believe that Joni ruined her own song with her caterwauling :bouncegiggle:
Some I like..
"It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" Hole
"Gold Dust Women" Hole
(What's weird about these songs, is BOTH are covers, both are by Hole, and BOTH are featured as soundtracks in two Crow movies.)
"Land of Confusion" Disturbed
"Send Me An Angel" Zeromancer (a REALLY great song, BTW)
"Paint It Black" Glob
"I've Got You Babe" Beavis and Butt-head with Cher :)
"Castlevania: Bloody Tears" Cradle of Filth (this would be a cover, right?)
"O Fortuna" Apotheosis (one of THE best techno/dance songs I've ever heard.)
"These Boots Are Made for Walking" KMFDM
"Owner of a Lonely Heart" Max Graham vs Yes (course, this might be more considered a remix, rather than a cover)
"Video Killed the Radio Star" Presidents of the USA
"All Along the Watchtower" Battlestar Galactica (can't recall the artist's name off-hand)
All been mentioned, but that's cool.
Van Halen - Your Really Got Me
Run DMC / Aerosmith - Walk This Way
Johnny Cash - Hurt
I guess these ones haven't been mentioned, but whatever.
Guns N' Roses - Knockin' On Heavens Door
Metallica - Turn The Page
Marilyn Manson - Sweet Dreams
The Futureheads version of "Hound Of Love" is brilliant.
the following Nirvava covers:
man who sold the world (david bowie)
where did you sleep last night (leadbelly)
mollys lips / son of a gun (vaselines)
lake of fire / oh me / plateau (meat puppets)
D7 (the wipers)
love buzz (shocking blue)
turnaround (devo)
my sharona (the knack)
here she comes now (velvet underground)
all great IMO.

Notably, their versions of :
"War Pigs"
"Strangers in the Night"
"Mahna Mahna"
"Never Gonna Give You Up"
and:

Some great choices there, Rich. The DK's Viva Las Vegas and Avengers' Paint it Black would definitely be on my list as well.
Some others would be:
"These Boots Were Made For Walking"- Jet Boys
"Shake, Rattle, and Roll"- Teengenerate
"Latest Flame"- Misfits
"Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves"- Anti Nowhere League
"No Fun"- Sex Pistols
"Steppin' Stone"- Minor Threat
"Sweatbox" (the entire album of cover tunes)- Supersnazz
and I'm sure there are many others I am not thinking of at the moment.
I think there was a thread about this a while back, but here goes anyway:
In no particular order:
Tori Amos
Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana)
Losing My Religion (REM)

Lovesong (The Cure)

Tiny Tim's cover of "Shot Through the Heart." (yessss.)

Genitorturers - Touch Myself
Metallica-Last Caress
Nickleback/Kid Rock - Saturday Nights Alright For Fighting
Dope - F*ck Da Police
Primus - The Thing That Should Not Be

Generally, anything by Me First and The Gimme Gimmes. A punk rock supergroup who does covers.
The definitive version of "My Way"

Sonic Youth's cover of The Carpenters' Superstar nicely brings out the twisted, stalker serial killer undercurrent of the lyrics. It sounds like a creepy message left on someone's answering machine at 2:00 am. :teddyr:
