Title: Recommendations?
Post by: Mr_Vindictive on September 22, 2007, 12:55:26 PM
October = best month of the year.  It's the time when I'm able to jump head first into my obsession with horror films without anyone else thinking I'm out of my mind.  Every year, I try to watch at least 31 films in October, one for each day of the month.  Sadly last year I fell a few short of my goal but was finally able to watch some real gems.  Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Don't Go In The House, Deadly Spawn, etc.

I'm wondering what everyone recommends I watch this year.  I'm looking for anything unusual, films that will get me in the mood for Halloween.  Zombie films would be preferred as they are my favorite subgenre, but this year I'm up for anything.  I would also prefer that any recommended films are available on DVD as I don't have much time to search around for a obscure film on VHS.

So, fire away.  What do you guys think I should watch this year?  The stranger, the better!

Wtffilm,

Just added it to my Netflix.  Looks like something that is right up my alley.  Thanks!

Grapes of Death? Is that the Jean Rollins Zombie movie here the wine turns people into the living dead?

I mentioned this movie in another thread...the old anthology DEAD of NIGHT (1946)  has not lost any of it's power in over 60 years- a grat Halloween movie!

Dead Of Night....noted.  Netflix doesn't have it which is a shame.  I'll see about getting a copy from Amazon or such.  Thanks RC!

How have I not heard of this film? That one went right up to number 2 on the Netflix queue, right after Oldboy.

You're spot on!  It's an interesting little film with enough shocks in it to keep the Halloween audiences happy and enough subtext to please the rest of us.  The most amazing thing about it is that just a few years later, Rollin would direct ZOMBIE LAKE. . .

How the mighty have fallen, eh?

Kindest regards,

I saw Grapes of Death a while back and just could NOT finish it.  Not to dash any hopes but it was a real bummer.  Too many lingering shots of nothing happening for my tastes.

Try a zombie movie that defies modern convention: White Zombie
It's got Bela Lugosi and a s**tload of creepy photography.

But if you must have lumbering Romero-style zombies, look up Let Sleeping Corpses Lie, Fulci's Zombie and for the love of god, see Dellamorte Dellamore already!

Not a zombie movie but there was a recent reissue of Witchfinder General that will change your understanding of Vincent Price forever.  It's probably one of the best British horror movies ever to live in the shadow of Hammer.  Absolutely great stuff.  Grimy and mean.  Trust me on this one, more people need to see it.

Already have Sleeping Corpses, Zombie and Cemetery Man - all great films.

I'll check out Witchfinder General.  I'm a sucker for anything with Vincent Price.

A few quick B-movie recommendations.

Flesh for the Beast
Interesting premise.  Certain aspects of the execution could have been better, but it's very atmospheric and has two interesting cameo's.

Creatures from the Abyss
This is one of those pseudo- teen beach movies, only it's more like teens stranded at sea on a abandoned research vessel.  You expect this to be a slasher movie but it's more of a low budget Alien knock-off.  Uninentionally funny at times but great fun to watch.

But, for really setting the mood, I'd recommend any of the Eko Eko Azarek films.  (I may have mispelled that.)  They are Japanese occult horror with a twist.

Will look for Flesh Of The Beast, Kester.

I already have Creatures From The Abyss on DVD.  Picked it up in that mutant multi-pack DVD set a few weeks back.  Haven't watched it yet but will do so.

I'm pretty sure that Netflix has Cannibal Holocaust.  I'm pretty sure I already have it somewhere in my queue.  I'll throw it towards the top.

I'll also see about doing the same with Invasion Of The Blood Farmers.

Some great recommendations here guys.  Keep em coming!

I HATE Cannibla Holocaust. Killing animals for a f**king movie is not cool.

Not hard at all.  Grindhouse released it recently in a pretty sweet special edition that was years in the making.

You also have to remember not all cities have cool places to shop. I live in a little town in the middle of Texas where our largest and ONLY place to shop is Wal-Mart...... :bluesad:

Dead Meat (2004) - Overlooked, underrated flick from Ireland about zombies and zombie-fied cows. Also a homage to Let Sleeping Corpses Lie (1974).

Slaughterhouse Of The Rising Sun (2005) - 'Manson' like clan meets Let's Scare Jessica To Death.

Both have a cool 1970s vibe going and make for an excellent watch in October/Halloween.

Thanks Hellbilly.  I have Dead Meat on DVD.  It's worth the price if only for the scene early in the film with an eyeball and a vacuum cleaner.  Very overlooked film that is quite good.

I have Slaughterhouse Of The Rising Sun in my Netflix queue currently.  Looked like a decent throwback to 70s horror such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
