This is another Midnite Movies double feature I recently purchased.

Both movies are based on the old E.C. horror comics and follow the same format:  5 people sit around and tell chilling stories that are shown via flashbacks.

TALES FROM THE CRYPT includes stories about a killer Santa; a deadly car crash; a kindly old man (Peter Cushing!) who is mistreated by his neighbor; a blind man; and a story based on "The Monkey's Paw."

THE VAULT OF HORROR includes stories about a strange town where the citizens are afraid to be outside after dark; an obsessively neat man (Terry-Thomas!) and his new wife; a magician who steals a rope trick in India; a man who is buried alive; and an artist who uses voodoo.

The stories range from "pretty good" to "just okay," but both movies are fun and the individual segments are short enough (about 15 minutes each) that they never become boring.

Tales from the Crypt was great, and I haven't seen Vault of Horror--yet!  But I did order the disc(s) from Amazon the other week and it should be coming in any day now.

Unfortunately, I understand it's not the original, uncut version, but considering I've never seen it in any form that doesn't bother me too much.

I have a copy on vhs of TALES from the CRYPT. It's odd seeing Peter Cushing in full blown Zombie makeup! Also like the 'Blind Man's Bluff' sequence...far out!

Picked up this set today and just finished with the first movie. Pretty good, but thought there would be a little bit of humor(was confusing it with the TV series, I guess). A emotionless, straight-faced, monotoned speaking Cryptkeeper took a little getting used to.

The ending had a nice way of tying together all the stories though. Didn't see it coming.

How did that movie get a PG rating anyways? Guess the MPAA not that strict on blood and gore as they are now.

You are correct.  Back in the 1970s, PG movies frequently had more violence and nudity than the PG movies of today.  Seeing a bloody shooting, a topless woman or a bare ass in a PG movie was not surprising in those days.  For instance, take a look at the movie LIFEGUARD starring Sam Elliott.  There's a short nude scene in that movie that would never make it into a PG movie (probably not even a PG-13 movie) today.  These days, PG is used more for "family comedies" than anything else.   The creation of PG-13 rating changed the contents of PG movies forever.

That's true.  I remember topless scenes in 1941, LOGAN'S RUN, and a number of other PG movies from the 70's.  Nowadays PG-13's can have endless jokes about sex, but you never catch a glimpse of a nipple . . .  what that says about our society I am not sure.
