Title: Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer: Quick review and thought
Post by: BTM on October 21, 2007, 07:07:03 PM
So, I watched Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer the other day.  I tell ya, I REALLY wasn't too inspired by it.  While the first one had a few cool action sequences, this one just felt really flat to me.  Not to mention there's a few gaping plot holes, here and there.

(See the end of this post for a spoiler of the film.)

Although I did think of something kind of funny this morning about the film (well, I think it's funny.)  You see, in the movie, basically this guy (Silver Surfer) appears, starts doing stuff, and tells the Four that the world is going to end.  Anyway, turns out Silver Surfer is working for a being that devours planets, in return for his own planet being spared.  Sue (Jessica Alba) tries to talk him out of letting the earth get destroyed.

My thought: Boy, if I were the Silver Surfer, I think Jessica Alba could convince me not to let the world get destroyed.  I'd just need a bit of "persuasion".

I could see it, she'd be like, "Come with me, I'll convince you the world is a good place..."  and take me to parks with families and playing children and stuff, and then onto a beautiful nature site and stuff, she'd be like, "See?  Look how beautiful this world is!  You can't let it die!  I'm begging you!"

And I (as Silver Surfer) would be like, "Actually, this isn't the kind of convincing I had in mind."

"What do you mean?"  (pause, pause) "Oh.  OH!"

(furious blushing)

"Well, uh.. I can't do that... I mean, I'm engaged and all."

I'd sigh heavily, "Weeelll.. I'm sorry to hear that.  You almost had me convinced there.  Ah, well... now, where did I put my cell phone."

"Wait!  Alright, fine!  If it's save the world..."

I know, I'm sad... but let me dream.

It's all I got.

(spoiler)

Guess Doom doesn't plan things very far ahead.  He's like, "Yay!  I've got the board!  I'm all powerful!  Oh, wait, world's still coming to an end.. damn.  Ahh, well, I'm going to be a DICK anyway, and not help stop it!"

Possible spoilers follow:

I haven't seen it, but according to someone I talked to, Galactus is just a cloud thing, and isn't actually depicted in his 'glory'.  That to me, seemed so silly.  Not sure if it's true though...  I also didn't realise Doom was in it.  He seems to be quickly becoming a useless character...

Ending of spoilers.

This story has so much going for it.  It's just about the only story from Fantastic Four's 'mythology' that I know well aside from Namor stuff.  It really has so much potential: Moral choices from the Silver Surfer, tormented characters in the Surfer's loneliness, even the continuation of the vague camaraderie between the newly formed [sorta] Fantastic Four, and how the world has adjusted to them.

But from all accounts it seems to be a bit of fluff.  And fluff with Alba is passable by my count.  I'm just annoyed because there's so much they could have worked in to make it actually a classy plot.  I guess I'll just have to wait and see and judge then.

I didn't like this movie . . . but I thought it was better than the first FF movie.   The tone of both movies just didn't feel right for some reason.  And they ruined Reed Richards by making him out to be an aggravating geek.

I was also really hoping for a big purple guy but this is Ultimate Galactus where he's a space-faring swarm of insects and not the giant in purple armor from the regular continuity.

Huge bummer.

I don't really read comics much these days but a few of Marvel's 'Ultimates' alternate arcs have really worked out while others have fallen flat.  Ultimate Fantastic Four, Ultimate X-Men and Ultimate Iron Man (which I guess the new movie is also kind of/sort of based on) were all pretty decent books.

spoilers...

Why is it that FF movies feel a need to exploit super powers for humor?  This one in particular it was ridiculous.  Reed dancing with girls and stretching out, Human Torch using heat to dry himself off from a shower, Invisible Girl turning invisible when she was naked (granted it was Alba but not much was to be seen) and The Thing drinking a ton of beer and burping.  I'd rather see superheroes using their power in kicking their enemies @sses.  It just seemed like one lame joke after another.  I may be taking this too seriously but it really made me want to rip my hair out.

I haven't watched either FF movie because I've heard that they suck, and not in a good way.

I'm going to save myself for something _really_ suck-ass, like, say, Troll 2.

I remember liking the first FF movie when it was in the theater...then again, I was in Florida in the middle of July, and any excuse to get out of the heat seemed good to me.  I rented it on DVD later, and it just didn't feel the same.

Rise of The Silver Surfer was ok.  I've seen much worse films, but then again, I've seen much better too.  The only thing that annoys me...out of all the actors who could have played Dr. Doom...WHY the guy from Nip/Tuck?  Why?...

The big problem for me was, if the Surfer has had the ability to take out Galactus all along (and there's no reason to believe he's just aquired it), why didn't he use it before he assisted in the annihilation of countless billions of lives. If it was a choice between suicide and genocide, I think I'd pick the former (not to mention all the people that would be saved in the future by the removal of Galactus). This point moves the Surfer from the rather tragic character he was in the comics to well..... a little bollix.

I'm sort of OK with the chlildish approach in these two movies. It masy not be faithful to the comicbooks, but there are enough serious superhero films out there. Was nice t osee some mutants that can live with their powers and don't spend hours of flasbacks before the action arrives.

But I have to admit I enjoyed the fist film in the series much more than this one. Yeah, the action is better, and the scenes with Silver Surfer are a joy to watch, but the comedy seems forced and the pace suffers from the ankward mix if light and dark moments. And then there's Victor Doom. Why they did even bother to bring him back? Such an interesting character wasted in a couple of scenes.

Enough is enough, I say the film deserves a pass, but I won't watch a third one.

I thought that the first one was bad enough so I have zero interest in seeing the sequel.

I enjoyed both. Blow me.
