Title: The Worst Way To Die?
Post by: Ash on October 24, 2007, 01:35:39 AM
I swear, I must be psychic.
Several weeks ago while listening to the radio, I had the Evanescence song "Bring Me To Life" in my head and then it played.

Yesterday, out of the blue, a scene from the movie Tommy Boy popped into my head.
It was the scene in the diner where Tommy says, "Tommy likey!  Tommy want wingy!"
Sure enough, about 15 minutes later I turned the TV to HBO and that very scene was playing.

And about 20 minutes before I decided to write this thread, I was thinking of writing about which way to die would be the worst.  Then, five minutes after that, I stumbled across the article below.   :buggedout:

http://science.howstuffworks.com/worst-way-to-die.htm

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So anyway, which way to die do you personally think would be the worst?

I think falling from a great height or a plane crash would be the worst.
It's knowing all the way down, you're probably going to die.
That's really scary to me.

Like in this scene:

-----------------------------------------------

I also fear being shot to death.
I've had several nightmares in the past and in each of them, I'm up against a wall looking over my left shoulder and a man raises his pistol and points it at me.
(http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/749/0325060603152345tnzp7.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)
(I can never see his face.  In the nightmares, it's always blurred out)
I plead, "No no no no no!  Please don't!" and then I wake up.
I'm never actually shot in those dreams but everytime I've had one, I wake up and my heart is pounding.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Take a moment to cast your vote.
I've set the voting so that you may vote for two categeories.

Which way to die would be the worst?

Falling down the side of the Empire State Building, dragging your eyelids on it the whole way.

Accidentally swallowing a quart of wasps.

Being chained to a wall and having a maniac use a tennis ball shooting machine to shoot jellyfish at you.

Trapped inside of a concrete mixer that is filled with broken glass - then the mixer is turned on.

Attacked with either a belt sander or a cheese grater.

(We used to play this game in Iraq.)

As horribly painful as that sounds, you have to admit, it would be fun to see that happen in a low budget slasher film.  I can just imagine how painfully funny that death scene would be.  Especially the cheese grater...

I clicked "other" before I saw you had an option for diseases.  Because nothing scares me more than Alzheimers.  Nothing.  Woodchippers, piranhas, suffocation... Nothing.

I picked tortured to death.  A slow, painful death is the worst.  Falling from a great height is only terrifying for a few seconds, and the end is relatively quick.

For me, it was a toss-up between burned to death and tortured to death. Burning just seems horrible all around, but torture has to be number one because somebody is deliberately making it as slow and painful as possible.

This reminds me of a little creative exercise from high school English. I don't even remember what the point of it was, but we were asked to come up with the worst way to go. After a few of the standard answers, I suggested being ground to nothing with sandpaper (hand sanding, of course - no quick machines). That one got a good reaction from the class, and actually made the teacher pause and think. As I recall, I did very well in that class.

Being flash-frozen in a block of ice, still conscious, being able to see freedom a few dozen feet in front of you, clawing your way till death, going numb with frostbite...

I picked Buried Alive and Disease.

What the Parthians did to Crassus . . .

having molten gold poured down your throat.  Gives me the chills every time I talk about it.

I voted for burning to death and disease.

Other options:

Death on a cross. Not to bring religion into this, but that is one of the most horrific, torturous deaths mankind has invented/used regularly.

Being set on fire while standing on a block of magnesium, then having someone squirt you down with water just as the magnesium ignites. Ouch...aaah....OUCH!

Being strapped to a large block of pure sodium, then dropped from an helicopter into the ocean, but not from a great enough height to kill you.

Being tied down, set upon by plague-ridden rats which are in turn set upon by rabid ocelots.

And now, I'm tired and am going to bed...but not with any ocelots.  :tongueout:

I picked drowning simply because I can't swim a lick.  Give me a boat or I'll stick my ass on dry land.

I also picked falling basically because of those dreams you get when you are either flying or hanging from some high precarious position a then you start to fall, but just as you face the impact of the ground, you suddenly wake up.

(my first post here)

I voted "falling from a great height" and "massive trauma/being crushed to death" because I've had (and still have, occasionally) nightmares about either happening to me since I was a small child.

For me it would be to be eaten alive. Especially by a shark. I have a huge fear of sharks.

I think catching on fire, then jumping into a vat of water, only to discover that it is salt water followed by realizing that you cannot swim would be up there near the top for me.

I think impalement on a short stake rates higher on the horrific scale of torturous deaths mankind has invented/used regularly.

Welcome aboard, cqmorrell!  I'd suggest avoiding "Return of the Fly" then.  There is a weird scene with a guinea pig/person and a large foot.

Fire for me.

As kids we always assumed it was "sliding down a long razor blade and landing in a vat of alcohol".
That must smart.

I think this one is my favorite of the bunch.  I can't begin to imagine the massive explosion that would cause.

Swallowing your own tongue (like Miggs from silence of the lambs). I dont know why, that always seemed really creepy to me.

The funny thing about crucifixion is that the most horrible and evil criminals were crucified upside-down. While considered the most dishonorable way to die, it was actually more humane, in that death came much faster.

Of those listed, tortured to death. They can make you last a long time that way. But of those not listed, crucifixation is proably one of the worst, time wise. People have lasted up to three days, before dieing on the cross. And here is another one that is just as bad, timewise. Have a blunt stake hammered up your anus, then set out to die somewhere. Some people have been known to last three days, before the blunt peg worked its way up their body, and it struck some vital organ,  causing death.

The fact that you know that information frightens me.   :buggedout:
