Title: Finally saw DEATH PROOF last night . . . . (spoilers)
Post by: indianasmith on October 27, 2007, 05:13:47 PM
What a great B movie!! I really  liked everything about it - the cinematography, the action sequences, Kurt Russell as the sneering Stuntman Mike - this was a pretty cool piece of cinema!! What's interesting was I had read all of the posts on here about it, and seen the previews - yet the scene where Mike takes out the four girls in the car still floored me!!! Just the sheer brutality of four beautiful young women snuffed out in an instant, deliberately, by a man who had been partying and dancing with them moments before - that was HARSH!!!!!!
AND THE ENDING!!!! Somehow the idea of ol' Mikey being used as a punching bag for those last few minutes of film was a much more emotionally satisfying ending than if they had just killed him flat out!

The only thing that left me wondering was why they never cut back to show what was going on with the girl they left back at the house of the creepy dude they borrowed the Grand Turino from.  I felt like there was  a great set-up for  a comic epilogue there, but it never materialized . . .

unless I missed something?  I did surf thru the bonus features disk, but I didn't see any "deleted scenes" on either one . . . oh well!!

Now tonight, I get to see "Planet Terror!"

The way I viewed Grindhouse was that Planet Terror was the appetizer and Death Proof was the main course, and that's exactly how the features played out for me.

I really liked Kill Bill Vol. 1 but was kind of let down by Vol. 2.  Lots of people disagree with me, but I feel that Quentin kind of regained his footing with Death Proof. Some people found the dialogue to be boring but I thought that it really lulled the audience into a sense of normalcy when WHAM! He kills the entire group of 1st girls in one fell swoop.

BTW, Zoe Bell is a doll and after seeing her in the documentary Double Dare and then this, I think she needs to move to VA and settle in with me.    :twirl:

It's funny, because I never saw Grindhouse in the theater and recently acquired both films on DVD...but have yet to watch them. I'm having a hell of a time deciding which to watch first.

Finally it got released here.  Like the rest of the normal world, we unfortunately don't get to see it as "Grindhouse" but as two seperate movies.

Interestingly enough they have released Death Proof first and are going to release Planet Terror in a few more weeks.

Saw it tonight and loved it.  Gotta love the ending, especially how sudden it is.

One thing that annoys me is that we didn't get to see the awesome trailers, but the way I figure it, the Aussie dollar is trading well at the moment so I can just import Grindhouse at almost the same price you guys get it for [we're at almost 0.94 to your dollar which is excellent.]

I enjoyed the hell out of this one and very much appreciated all the talking, and also, of course, all the nice young things to look at.  Though it was a little odd seeing and hearing someone from NZ in an american film.  It took me briefly out of the film, but only because I wasn't expecting a familiar accent to pop up in the middle of 'Lebanon'  :bouncegiggle:

So, am I the only one left on the planet that thought Death Proof was painfully boring?

I saw Grindhouse in the theaters and the first half was great.  The crowd was cheering and having a good time.  Then Death Proof came on.  A bunch of people walked out when the girls get to the bar and more nothing happens.  A couple people fell asleep (no kidding) and I found myself struggling to stay interested.  It didn't help that the dark-haired girl was from the e-harmony commercials about bad dates ("I'm really into nuts.  Cashews, peanuts, something in a trail mix").

Stuntman Mike was a great character and Kurt Russell looked like he was really enjoying himself.  The first murder scene was fantastic...and I was hoping the movie was going ramp up the action.  Not so much because the next scene was of yet another group of girls talking about stuff and how great Vanishing Point was.

The last car chase wasn't so bad but what was really unappealing is the overuse of "motherf*cker" by the black girl driving the car.  I'm all for profanity and I know she's supposed to be hard-core and everything but there is a limit.

Add to that QT's unhealthy foot fetish and you see why I'm not a fan of this movie.
