Title: Nov. 22 is the 20th anniversary of the Chicago TV pirate incident
Post by: trekgeezer on November 20, 2007, 01:06:44 PM
A broadcast pirate (impersonating Max Headroom) broke in on PBS while they were showing Dr. Who.  He or they were never caught and the authorities still don't know how they did it.
Here's the article at Damn Interesting (http://www.damninteresting.com/?p=776#more-776).  Check out the videos below.

There's no mention of that.

Never hear of this incident before. Interesting. They had to have enough power to overide the PBS channel.

My guess is that he nailed the main transmitter with a focused shot from a directional dish that had enough power the smother the legitimate signal.  Still, imagine going from Dr. Who to watching a man getting his bare butt swatted.  That probably caused a couple of people to swear off drinking.
