Title: What is the CAMPIEST Movies of all time?
Post by: CheezeFlixz on November 26, 2007, 06:01:43 PM
I love campy movies and these are in no special order and in no way a complete list of campy movie. These are mostly from what I think to be the height of camp the 80's, but a few others as well. The 50's and 60's I call cheesy more so than campy. I know there is no way I've seen even a 1/100 of all the campy movies out there. Please feel free to name more of them.

Choose up to 5.

I'm not sure I understand the definition of 'camp'. What IS 'camp?'  :question:  Really...I'm dead serious too.
Does camp mean intentionaly stupid/funny or unintentionaly/funny stupid?

I think NIGHT of the LIVING DEAD is one of the best horror films ever,and EVIL DEAD and REANIMATOR are great too...but...I always get confused on the meaning of 'camp'!

I have heard the old BATMAN TV series described as camp...which I think is a intenionaly funny/stupid show-I like it!

In fact...the old BATMAN movie from the sixties...(you know,the one with the rubber shark?) was pretty great!

RCMerchant, here's the wikipedia entry which gives a pretty good definition.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camp_%28style%29

As for the list, I wouldn't consider several of those camp. But for what its worth, I'd say "Rocky Horror" is the best as far as intentional camp value goes while "Plan 9 from Outer Space" wins for unintentional camp value.

I included those that are intentional camp (Elvira) and those that I think have achieved camp status (Plan 9).

I wouldn't include NotLD...

I guess I WOULD include
REEFER MADNESS...as that movie cracks me up!
I seriously think that BLOODFREAK is intetionally tounge in cheek...(witness the coughing attack by the narrator at the end of the film!)
I would also include ROBOT MONSTER,BEAST of YUCCA FLATS,the old BATMAN movie,and possibly the SUPERMAN movies....(SUPERGIRL definitely!)
of the list you have...PLAN 9 would be my favorite.  :thumbup:

Just about anything directed by John Waters or Russ Meyer would be appropriate for this list.  Plus, there are quite a few 1970s drive-in sex comedies available from Something Weird DVD that you might want to check out.  I have a few such as:

* SASSY SUE
* THE PIGKEEPER'S DAUGHTER
* SWEET GEORGIA
* COUNTRY HOOKER
* PLEASE DON'T EAT MY MOTHER

These are seriously campy . . . and have lots of nekkid women in them . . .

That film is excruciatingly painful.

Sad thing is, I like most of the above mentioned flicks more than some 'mainstream' type films.

Nearly anything from Something Weird Video is campy/cheezy some are a real riot. Movies like "Please Don't Eat My Other", "Kiss Me Quick", "House On Bare Mountain" and so many more a great purely based on their cheeziness.

BATMAN The Movie 1966 added.

Not to be picky, but you don't list the single campiest movie that could have ever been (and should have never been): Vegas in Space (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103192/). It's a horrific train wreck of a movie that I caught on late night Cinemax in the '90s. What makes it campier even than The Rocky Horror Picture Show? The movie stars an all-drag queen cast cracking jokes that only other drag queens would appreciate. The sets are cosmetics bottles and such painted and set up as cityscapes. The cast makes more believable women than men (and they actually are men). This movie burned itself into my brain and has refused to leave for more than a decade. I think Troma released it a few years ago on DVD, and I was tempted to buy it just to prove it exists (it wasn't listed on IMDB as of 2000, but it is now), but I didn't want to spend the $15 Best Buy was asking for it.

You've got some good movies listed here CheezeFlixz, but I don't think that John Waters, Adam West, Ed Wood and Elvira, Queen of Darkness combined could outcamp this large group of drag queens with a video camera.

'Vegas in Space' is added, I almost put on the original list 'The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert' (1994) as I said there is no way I can get them all, there are so many. Even a lot of Charles Band stuff is campy, much of Bruce Campbell too, John Waters, most of Full Moon Feature's production and Troma and so many, many more.

I just queued up Vegas in Space on my rental account, so we'll see if it burns images into my mind.

Holy Sardine! This one should win hands down.

And where is 'Beyond the Valley of the Dolls"???

Nobody's really attempted to respond to RCMerchant's request for a definition of "camp" -- I will attempt said:
     As context of the aforementioned films can imply, humour, both intentional and unintentional, plays a huge part in any consideration of the term.  However, I think that the best "camp" always implies some sort of gay humour or gay context.
     For example:  Robot Monster is appealing to a gay theatrical sensibility due to the sheer blithering absurdity of the cosutmes & dialogue.  At the same time, you need not necessarily be gay or like gay people to understand that overdone makeup, overdone hair, overdone costuming, etc. etc., can be a prime source of humour.
     Here I think is another factor of "camp" -- It must be waayyy over the top/overdone/full of unnecessary lights and whistles and bells.  For example, Mommy Dearest -- I did NOT see "Mommy Dearest" on the list/Is it there? -- is "camp" not only for the over-the-top performance of Faye Dunnaway, but her David Gest Frightmare makeup as well.  Had she not been so heavily made up, I don't think it would be considered quite so camp.  Also, waving wire coat hangers around -- completely unnecessary to the plot or story -- see what I mean?
     Any film with Charles Birch is camp.  Almost any film with Paul Bartel is camp, as he winks at the audience even while being eaten by pirahnas.  "The Lost Skeleton of Cadavara" is camp camp camp:  "Dance, Animalia, Dance!!" could not be more a more overdone bit even with a Mariachi band & a conjuerer, to quote John Cleese.
     All that being said, all camp is not created equal, re. the enjoyment factor.  Personally, I found "Moulon Rouge" to be a boring bit of camp, despite Nicole Kidman bleeding from her cute nose, dying grandly from TB.  Bored me to death.  Go figure . . .
     Cross-dressing & gay presence helps, but doesn't clinch the deal.  For example, I don't find "La Cage A Folles" to be particularly campy, as the overdone character of the gay boyfriend/fake wife is actually central to the plot & given the context is not overdone.  It's a farce, but not a particularly camp farce.
     "Victor/Victoria" becomes repellant camp, if for no other reason than it tries too damn hard to be outrageous, and it shows.  Yes, I suppose it could be considered campy, but one other element of real "camp" is fragility:  The whole illusion could be easily blown or ruined.  Pay no attention to the drag queen behind the evening gown!!  There must be some magic to surrender to -- "Victor/Victoria" has none.
     "Batman:  The Movie" is one of the best examples that people have come up with here, and lays the ground for one of my personal faves:  Danny Elfman's "The Forbidden Zone!".  Anyone still in doubt as to what "camp" is need only view the angry, shouting, 3-ft. tall, poorly acted King of the Underworld, beneath his skeletal chandelier, raving to his fat queen, played with all his heart by Herve Velleschez, on a quality cardboard/hand-painted set . . . I can say no more . . .
