Title: DAMAGED GOODS (aka V.D.) (1961)
Post by: The Burgomaster on December 02, 2007, 09:43:14 AM
POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD (don't worry . . . you won't care)

This is on a "Something Weird" double feature DVD with THE HARD ROAD.

Jim and Judy are 2 high-school kids who plan to skip college and get married right after graduation.

Jim tells Judy that college is a waste of 4 years because the starting salary for an auto mechanic is the same as an engineer . . . and if he becomes an auto mechanic he can skip 4 years of college and start earning money immediately!

Enter: Kathy!

Kathy is a flirtatious brunette who has caught the eye of Jim's best friend Monk.  Unfortunately, Kathy is more interested in Jim and will do just about anything to get him.

Judy spends most of the movie pouting about how much Kathy flirts with Jim.

Jim, Monk and a couple other guys decide to go to Seaview one night and "look around."  They end up at a strip joint where a suspicious character gives them the name of another bar where they can find some action.

They go to the other bar and switch from beer to rum drinks (this is shown in a montage of drink-pouring).  Before long, they meet four prostitutes and have (offscreen - remember, this is 1961) sex with them.

A few days later, Jim is at the lake with Kathy (remember, Judy is at home pouting).  They frolic in the water, chase each other around, and then have (offscreen) sex.

Some time passes and Kathy starts dating Monk.  They have (offscreen) sex.

Meanwhile, Jim tells his track coach about a sore on his privates that won't heal.  The coach takes Jim to a doctor and we learn that Jim has (ugh) syphilis!  The doctor just happens to have a film projector set up and he shows Jim a full-length, and fairly graphic, U.S. government instructional movie about V.D.!  (This awkwardly pads the running time of DAMAGED GOODS as we, the audience, get to see the entire V.D. film.)

At first, Jim denies having sex with anyone else.  However, before long he realizes that he probably passed his syphilis along to Kathy, who probably passed it along to Monk!  So he tells the doctor and we assume everything will turn out okay.

In the closing scene, Jim is back together with Judy . . . hopefully having learned a valuable lesson!

This is a very laughable "message" film that probably didn't play anywhere except "adults only" theaters.  I found it to be a very entertaining bad movie (it's stupid, but never boring).  In many ways, it reminded me of a Ray Dennis Steckler movie.

What surprised me the most is that some of the actors actually went on to have fairly successful careers.  For example, Charlotte Stewart who played Judy has appeared in numerous television shows (and some movies, too).  Most recently, she has appeared in TWIN PEAKS, COLD CASE, and THE OFFICE.  Michael Bell, who played Monk, has been in some movies and TV shows like SIX FEET UNDER and has done numerous voices for video games, including METAL GEAR SOLID 3 and AGE OF EMPIRES III.  Check out IMDB for more info.

I love the old "educational" films that play out like twisted soap operas.  It is one of the charms of "Ship of Shame" and "Tomorrow's Children," and it sounds like this is another one.  Going to have to track down this movie.  I see that the DVD is available from Something Weird.  Good, that usually means decent quality - especially compared to the Mill Creek packs and others like Alpha Video.

I've got a bunch of those SWV ed films most are pretty lame but there are some real gems in there too. Anything from the sex scare films, to atomic war. Those are always entertaining.

I was real in to "the Hard Road" but didn't have tijme to watch this one when I rented it.

the previews are amazing as well.l  You can literally see where these scare films became exploitation films (which of course, they always were)
