I tell ya--been lotta those movies with me.
Secondhand Lions and Holes are just a couple of them......
Mean Girls comes to mind.
I ended up enjoying She's The Man, for some reason.
I was working a shift at Blockbuster at the time, though.
Off the top of my head:
Mean Girls- Surprisingly, very funny and well written.
A Walk to Remember- Chick flick, but in a nice way.
Princess Diaries- can't really explain it.
Arsenic and Old Lace- I watched it on video a couple years ago, and thought I'd hate it, seeing as it was WAY before my time. Glad I watched it.
Monsters Inc- Loved Toy Story, hated Bugs Life, so I was up in the air. Great movie.
Raising Arizona: At first glance, it looked too much like Three Men and a Baby with a white trash, criminal twist. I was pleasantly surprised to find it was much more clever than that.
The re-make of Dawn of the Dead. I hated the idea, hated the changes. Yet overall it was a pretty decent movie. There still are parts of the plot that I have trouble with particularly with what happened to Andy. They gave the head mall cop who was total ass through most of the movie a more honorable death. But still it was better than I thought it would be.

I loved Dawn of the Dead, and I loved the use of blood. Looked totally real.
- if only they didn't make the zombies run.
I still loved it.
:)
Not liked exactly, but just didn't hate. Beware, here be spoilerage!
Alfie with Jude Law.
I've never met Jude Law, but I can say with certainty the guy's a tosser *lol*
Saw Alfie last night because there was NOTHING else on telly and I was too lazy to get up and put in a DVD. I hated his character and thought he was a tosser and a wanker. And the girls who fell for his "charms" deserved to get taken for a ride. All I can say is, if that's the way that men really think, women are in for a heckuva shock!
As bad things started to happen to him, he was supposed to become a more sympathetic character, but I didn't feel that at all. I just thought, "good, he deserves it". Because at the end of the movie, when every avenue he went down was closed off to him, he didn't really learn anything. I could see that he was just ready for his next big adventure. And all the bleating and posturing he did about maybe having someone to love is a good idea, just rang hollow with me.
I guess that may have been what the film makers had in mind. Maybe he wasn't really supposed to be a sympathetic character. Of course, if they wanted him to be a rascally naughty boy you constantly forgive, it didn't work with me.
I have seen the original with Michael Caine, but I understand that Caine's Alfie, was supposed to be a bit of a bewildered naughty boy instead of a narcissistic player.
Either way, it was entertaining in a remote kind of way. Wouldn't recommend it.
Caddyshack, it was mainly because I was in bad mood that day but then I saw that Gopher.
MISSION TO MARS. I thought I would hate the sucker...and at first I really couldn't get past the APOLLO 13ish accomplishment-to-disaster ratio. Then it just started growing on me. I actually get a little choked up with Gary Sinise's scene as he begins his "voyage home".
Though they do commit that weird oversight in films when a character has a "life flashes before their eyes" moment and every flash is a scene from the (arguably limited time frame of the)movie itself!
Knocked up, it was funny but way too long and turned into a chick flick for the last half.
I've had this happen a couple of times, the ones that mostly come to mind though are...
Silence Becomes You
Mousehunt--it was hilarious
Bee Movie
The Running Man
The Onion Field--which is now one of my favorite movies, it really turned me on to a few actors
Knocked UP
It seems though usually when i think i won't like a movie, its usually a family orientated film, which i don't really care for family/romance films. but everyonce in awhile i'll come across one i really like.
something about mary...thought it was going to be some chick flick but ....surprise, surprise :teddyr:

I heartily agree about the zombies running. Running is the antithesis of zombiedom. Sure they could have made them more ambulatory, but running??? No. The zombies already have the advantage of numbers, worldwide chaos, highly infectious bite, lack of pain and being a b***h to kill. The least they can do is shamble around.
The Elephant Man- Loved it. Kinda interested me, but didn't think I'd like it.
Freaks- Wanted to see it, if anything because the Ramones were a fan, and they referenced it on the Clerks cartoon. Thought it was a well done movie.
8 Mile- I was a fan of Eminem's music, but wasn't sure if I'd be able to stomach two hours of him 'acting.' Good movie.
The first Harry Potter movie. I went to see it just to see what all the fuss was about. I wasn't particularly impressed. The following year I got dragged to see the second film. That one got my interest and out of curiosity I read the book. Well, once that happened I was hooked. I then burned through all the existing books and revisited the first film. Now I like it.
There are also a bunch of films that my wife loves that I thought for sure I'd hate, but somehow seem to start watching whenever they come on:
Mean Girls
The Prince and Me
Legally Blonde
The live action Bratz movie was no where near as horrible as I thought it would be...I even liked it better than Transformers!
another vote for Mean Girls
Dragon Dynasty
Dungeons and Dragons 2

It's a shame that with Dungeons and Dragons the possibility of a popular movie franchise was destroyed with the first movie. I had heard that second movie was actually pretty decent for a direct to video movie. I haven't seen it yet. Please tell me that setting was a more traditional D&D campaign world and not that godawful fanfiction universe from the original movie.
Didn't expect to like the HILLS HAVE EYES remake...but it was an ok time waster...
The new KING KONG. I was to tear it a new a$$hole-but it was alright! They kept it in the 1930's...it had lotsa dinos, and it was kinda sad. Still doesn't meet the original...but not much can.
I was so disappointed when I heard about 28 Weeks Later.
I am such a fan of 28 Days Later that I was worried about any kind of a sequel ruining it.
Quite the opposite, though. Loved it. Never as much as the first, but still thought it was a good fit for the first.
Transformers (2007) and AVP. Ended up liking both far more than I expected I would. Not that either was a masterpiece, just more fun than I figured they would be.
The Island: I liked this better than I thought I would. Surprisingly enjoyable update on Parts: The Clonus Horror.
Yeah Michael Bay has been surprising me lately. Especially considering how much I loathed ARMAGEDDON on first viewing. Now I have some hopes for I AM LEGEND.
I, Robot: found it more enjoyable than I thought I would even if it's still largely an action film.
Movies that proved better for me personally than I thought they would after hearing some bad word of mouth:
Mimic
Signs
Unbreakable (Absolutely loved this movie)
The Arrival
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines
Minority Report

It is a lot closer to the feel of a real game (but has to deal with a massively smaller budget) and I liked it far more than I thought I would. They have a small party of mixed classes go on a quest, reference game modules, and have a necromancer running around. The only returning character is Damodar (sans blue lipstick) I covered it here (http://tarstarkas.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=289&Itemid=1).
Memoirs of an Invisible Man (1992)
I was kind of skeptical about it, since Chevy Chase plays a serious role and all, but I loved it.

Glad you enjoyed that, of course it is great (despite
CARY GRANT... okay, I'm kidding, but not really...) Appreciating the old Hollywood greatness of
ARSENIC AND OLD LACE takes you a long way, but you would not believe how many movies are even better, but just need your discovery!!!
Thought I would hate
JURASSIC PARK but loved it... can't say it holds up as well outside a theatre, but still love the climax with the banner falling in front of the living T-Rex. :teddyr:

Sad part is, everytime I watch it and see Peter Lorre all I think of is Ren from Ren and Stimpy. John K did a great impression. But I do like the movie. Watched it last week in fact.
Movies you thought you would hate but ended up liking..................every single B-Movie I own!
Harry Potter 1,2 and 3. I wouldn't say I love the movies or own the dvd, but I did like the movies, despite not being a fan of the books.
AVP, Mean Girls, An Unfinished Life. Also Forrest Gump. It looked stupid at first, but then it turned out to be amazing, and one of my favorite movies.

Gump is such a good movie. Very good.
Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)
Audrey Hepburn's character was annoying at times, but I sort of identified with the wild-spirt-afraid-to-commit attitude. As predictable as the ending was, I still enjoyed it. Poor Mr. Cat!

I identified more with the writer guy. I've been a couple of borderline platonic/romantic relationships in my lifetime with girls like Holly Golightly. They suck and NEVER end up the way they do in this movie (although, the speech he gives at the end of the movie is awesome). Note to all you young guys out there...Dump girls like this. They will never come around like they do in this movie. You're wasting your time. If you follow my advise, my time on this earth will not be misspent.
I still like the movie, though.
I agree! You don't want to get into a relationship with someone who's overly capricious and unsure of what they want. Huzzah for clichéd entertainment, so we can enjoy these things even if they probably won't happen.
Dr. Doolittle- The Eddie Murphy one. I was kinda unimpressed with Nutty Professor, but Dr. Doolittle was a cute flick.
Underdog
Man, did this look stupid. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how funny it was. I guess being a dog lover, all that doggie humor hit home for me. The movie was still silly and goofy, but I ended up liking it.
Transformers.
It probably helped that I was more a HeMan, Ninja Turtle, GI Joe Fan and didn't care about the 'legacy'. They were cool toys, but didn't hold up to punishment so I never asked for any.
Yes, they needed a lot more robot fights and a lot less human banter, but it was very fun big screen experience.
Next up is cloverfield, just because I have an innate curiosity for places people tell me to stay away from. :hot:
The Longest Yard (remake 2006)
Since it was on Showtime a lot, I couldn't avoid it. But I did watch it, and it's really pretty good. I have to see the original version, now. It's been a while.
