Title: The Hive
Post by: Jack on February 18, 2008, 10:37:29 AM
Caught this last night on the Sci-Fi Channel.

SPOILERS

The first two thirds of it were actually pretty good.  On an island someplace (I'm guessing Philippines?  I dunno.) there is an infestation of army ants.  They swarm and eat all the crops, chase everybody out of their homes, real pain in the butt.  Tom Wopat (and older and wiser Luke Duke - imagine Stephen Baldwin if he could act) leads a team of high-tech exterminators who use cool sci-fi weapons to kill the ants and save the people.  Unfortunately, these ants seem to have become intelligent.  So Luke Duke calls in his old girlfriend/ant expert to come check these things out.  The ants kidnap a girl and hold her hostage, wanting to negotiate for territory on the island.  They've even got an ant computer  :bouncegiggle:

The end is sort of out of left field and really doesn't have anything to do with anyything that came before it, but it wasn't entirely horrible.

This one was actually a cut or two above the average Sci-Fi original movie, it held my interest and was enjoyable, I liked the premise that ants , in their millions' can become a giant super-organism and negotiate with people for territory. All in all a pretty good movie.

Huh, this sounds like an updated version of "Phase IV."  I'll have to check it out.  Thanks!

While watching this I thought of "Phase IV", but it also reminded me of a novel I read some time ago, (1960's), finally remembered the title and author just now "The Green Brain" by Frank Herbert. It dealt with man trying to control insects and how insects became intelligent and started fighting back, pretty creepy stuff as I recall.

Unfortunately I don't think Sci-Fi is showing it again until March 30.
