Title: Do You Smoke?
Post by: Ash on March 02, 2008, 06:31:48 AM
I asked this same question nearly five years ago and got several good responses.
Here's the link to the old thread:

Since then, this board has changed quite a bit and many members have come and gone.
So I figured I'd ask again...

Do you smoke?
If so, what do you smoke?
Cigarettes? Cigars?  A pipe?
What brand?
How long have you smoked?
If you used to smoke, how long did you smoke for and what made you quit?

If you still smoke, do you believe you will ever quit?

I've been smoking cigars as of late.  I prefer cigarettes but don't want to buy 20 of them at once.  i wish they sold them individually!!

I was only a social smoker in days past, having a cigarette when drinking with friends. I was able to easily stop when I decided I had had enough. It's been over ten years since I had a cigarette. These days I enjoy a cigar every now and then, which works out to be about once every two or three years.

Yes. I roll my own cigs...as the cost of pre-rolled (even generic brands) is insane. I smoke either BUGLER or GAMBLER tobacco. I used to smoke Camels....but no more...

Heh!  I used to smoke Bugler years ago.
Had to stop because they irritated my throat and made me cough like crazy.

Speaking of cigarettes, I haven't had one since 2001.
But I replaced them with these:
(http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/3003/mildvanillalt8.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

They cost less than cigs and I don't smoke as many of them. (about $3.50 per pack)
I also don't crave them like I did cigarettes.
When I give them up, that's it, I'm done smoking.

I sit on my roof and have a cigarette every few days when I feel like it but I don't really smoke very much.

I HATE cigaretes, but unfortunately we live with my mother-in-law who is a heavy smoker.  She likes to sit inthe kitchen and do her crossword puzzles, so there is always a cloud of smoke in the air in there.

I don't intend to ever do so, but I've been thinking a lot about the smoking bans here in Chicago and I feel like this is a good time to say that Illinois bars and bowling alleys are going to suffer from these bans.  If you also live in a state where indoor smoking is no longer allowed, then we are all in the same boat.  Some of us may never bowl again because of this.

I'm with Indianasmith, I hate the damned things. I played around smoking a few cigars when I was a teenager, but I grew up in a house full of smokers.  I joined the Navy and they practically encouraged smoking and drinking back then.

I would never date a girl that smoked because the stuff gets all in their hair and there's nothing grosser that the smell of cigarette smoke and perfume.

I have little mercy for people slowly killing themselves.  I've had three brothers who had heart attacks prior to age 50, one of them fatal.  The difference between me and them, they all smoked for 30 years prior to their heart attacks.  None of the men in my father's side of the family ever had heart problems until late in their 70's or early 80's.

Two of my mother's sisters and her dad died from lung cancer.  Grandpa always rolled his own.

It's a habit I thank to God I never picked up.

I've never smoked in my whole life.  Never have, never will.  Not even to try a puff in high school.  It just never occurred to me to do that.

I really hate smoking.  I've only ever dated 2 guys in my whole life who smoked.  And I really resented having a shower before going to bed and then waking up smelling like I'd been in a nightclub.  My hair is thick, curly and half way down my back - so I have a LOT of hair.  And it was awful every time I moved my head that I could smell smoke in my clean hair.

My stepfather was a heavy smoker - somewhere in the vicinity of 40 a day.  One time he got so sick with flu that he couldn't eat, let alone smoke.  After that he never picked them up again, but I remember growing up with a haze in side the house.

There are no smoking laws all over the place here.  There has been for many years.  So I really notice the smell when someone has lit up.  I would never again date a guy who smoked.  It smells bad let alone the taste second hand.  Unfortunately, most guys here smoke so that leaves the dating pool a little small.

I smoked 10 to 30 cigarettes a day for a little over 30 years, I decided to quit the week before Christmas in 2002 and I did, it was hard but I managed. I still occasionally want to enjoy a smoke but I know that 1 would lead to 2, then 3 or 4 and soon I'd be right back where I started from. I have learned from this that to quit smoking you really have to want to, it's a habit that is not as easy to break as some people would have us believe. I find that I have no problem with being around smokers or with smoking in general, it's just something I chose not to do any more.

Sadly, yes, I smoke.  Less than 1/2 a pack of Camels a day, for 19 years.  This is less than any addicted smoker I know of, and I can sort of fake being a nonsmoker for short periods.  I'm able to go for 5 hours or more without turning into an insufferable nicotine fiend, long enough to survive a date or a family dinner.

I've smoked cigars, pipes, and... ahem... other stuff in the past, as well.  I've even smoked odd herbs intended to be substitutes for cigarettes and... ahem... other combustibles, such as damiana.

To be honest, I doubt I'll ever quit for good.  I have quit occasionally over the years, but always relapsed.  I have never had the proper motivation, and I don't see it magically arising someday.  The only situation I could see arising is if I fell in love with a woman who insisted I quit; but then again, women who are that opposed to smoking probably aren't going to get that deeply involved with me in the first place.

I smoked for about 20 years. One day I had a wisdom tooth removed and was told I shouldn't smoke for a few days to allow it to heal up. I stopped and 1 day turned into 2  and 2 turned into 3...I have been smoke free since January 7th, 2004.

I don't really mind being around people who smoke as long as the are considerate of the fact that I don't want to breathe it in and they don't blow it at me or light up in a confined area. My GF smokes but not too heavily...maybe 4-6 a day...so it's not too bad but then again, she is very considerate of others and is careful to make sure that her smoking doesn't bother anyone else.

My soon to be ex-father-in-law is a terrible smoker. Years ago he used to give me crap about smoking as he had quit and been without a cigarette at that time for about 6 years...one day he just started smoking again. He smokes non-filtered...why?...because, he claims, the doctor told him to smoke non-filtered because they put more chemicals in the filtered cigarettes...right....Anyway, he is so bad now. He doesn't care who is around him or where he is. He gets into coughing fits where he can't breathe and then takes a shot of his asthma thing and within minutes, he's lighting up another one. Of course, nothing beats the time about 2 years ago when I was over there and we were all sitting around outside. He was smoking and drinking...suddenly he gets into this coughing fit where he was coughing stuff up...couldn't breathe...was frantically searching for his asthma thing...finally he was ok. So he decides he needs to go inside and use his nebulizer breathing treatment which is for bronchitis and other breathing problems. It's a machine with a mask and you put this chemical in it and then put the mask on...it opens your lungs and passages and allows you to breathe better. He does the treatment for 15 minutes...comes back outside and lights up again...it was beyond ridiculous...it was just plain sad.

I know about the nebuliser.  My son was badly asthmatic when he was little and before he could use his puffer, I had to put on the machine every night.  He loved it because it made him dizzy and able to breathe  *lol*

I used to work with a girl years ago.  Lovely girl, really heavy smoker.  She would always be sick and have a phlegmy rumbling in her lungs.  And the coughing fits were just monstrous.  But she wouldn't stop smoking.  She had these huge red boil type blind pimples on her face she called carbuncles.  I told her she needed to stop smoking because all the crap was clogging up her skin and because of the oxygen depravation in her blood, her face would never clear up.

She agreed with me but she wouldn't stop smoking.  And she'd complain about not having a boyfriend.  Apparently guys were put off by her stained teeth and constant coughing.  But she still wouldn't give up.  I haven't seen her in many years and I wonder sometimes if she's still alive.

Never have smoked as I'm allergic to cigarette smoke.

However, a lot of my friends smoke which poses quite a problem for me in terms of hanging out with them and not getting sick.

There's only one thing I have to say about that.

My girlfriend smokes too. She is also very considerate of others and always smokes outside. I really wish she could quit as she has bronchitis and I know it's not helping her in any way, shape or fashion. Me, I'm actually straight-edge. I don't smoke, drink or do drugs.

Had a few cheapie store bought cigars in the past or when the mood hits me right.  Very few and far between.  I actually enjoy the scent of pipe smoke or a good flavored Phillies. I hate cigarette smoke though.  It seems to cling to people like glue.
