Title: DVD Vending Machines
Post by: Ash on March 06, 2008, 11:03:11 AM
At a grocery store near my home, they recently installed one of these cool Redbox DVD vending machines.
I had never heard of or seen one before so when it officially went online this morning, I had to try it.

It's pretty cool!
All DVD's are new releases and the selection is roughly between 25-50 titles depending on the machine.
Each rental is only $1 !  :buggedout:
(I rented Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer)
Just swipe your credit or debit card and it'll charge you the buck the next day when you return it.
The only drawback is that your rental must be returned by 9pm.
A plus is that you can retun it to any Redbox machine.  So if you're all the way on the other side of town, it can be very convenient.

Screw paying almost $5 per movie at Blockbuster!  I'll be renting from this thing from now on.

Check out their site:

Have any of you ever tried one of these machines before?

Several of the local stores near me have them, but I have yet to use one.  I may use one if they offer a movie that I am interested in, but I usually don't see anything that I like, plus I usually watch movies either on the weekends or if my dad works that week then I will watch a movie or DVD, other wise I do not.

Yea, they've had those at Mcdonalds for a while now. They are pretty cool cuz usually they'll have newer obscure b-movie horrors that are hard to find in other places like "Snoop Dog's hood of Horror" and Sid Haig in "Hand of Death".

Utah must be a test market -- I've seen those at every McDonald's and every supermarket for the past year.  Selection's not bad for an "impulse rental."

Plus, Redbox releases promo codes for free rentals to bring in business, and you can find them at http://www.insideredbox.com.  Free movies!

they had those out here in Boston but ran into problems with them.  There were some fraudelent people involved in renting them to the places and they wouldn't repair them when they broke.  but other lpaces have had no problems

Thanks Nathan!  Karma for you for pointing out that link.
I would've never known if you hadn't mentioned it.
I signed up for their newsletter which not only keeps track of codes, but also e-mails you new ones.

And I've heard they're at McDonald's.  When I was getting my video this morning, a woman was sifting through a small DVD bin right behind me and I asked her if she'd ever rented from a Redbox before.
She said she hadn't but she'd seen them at several Mcdonald's.

After I'm done watching Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, I'm going to go back to the machine and get me some more free movies!

I've never seen this before, not even at McDonald's.
