Title: Newbie Post- Sorry if this annoys.. Current Top 10 B-Movies?
Post by: redsneaker on March 23, 2008, 08:39:35 PM
I am interested in knowing your top B-Movies. Can you give me a top 10... or 5? I have been browsing this forum for a few days and have gotten some movies to add to my "gotta see" list.  I have a handful of favorites but you guys n gals are way ahead of me. I am going to watch a few a week and will post my list soon. Its so interesting to see the different tastes of B.

Well, some of that depends on what you consider to be a b-movie.

Some of my favorites include:

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974, the original) - Simply a great horror film.

Doctor Butcher MD (a.k.a. Zombie Holocaust) - Mix cannibals, a mad doctor, automatons, a tropical setting, Alexandra Delli Colli, a suicidal mannequin, and stir.

Robot Monster - Simply funny as hell.

Satan in High Heels - Maybe not everybody's cup of tea, but a damn fine film that goes well above its 60s sexploitation roots.

Lucio Fulci's Zombie (1979) - See what happens when Lucio Fulci and a linear storyline come together. Gory as hell.

Escape From Hell - Damn cool women in prison flick with the barest and sweatiest of actresses.

Tremors - Not a b-movie, to me anyway, but a damn fine and fun monster flick.

Mad Max and Road Warrior - Required viewing before you can claim to have a penis.

Retroactive - A mix of action movie and time travel with one smoking hot leading lady.

Those are just off the top of my head.

Hmmm, well, if we're talking about all-time personal favs, there's probably nothing on my list that hasn't been seen by most people here. Sticking to American horror fare, here's my first 9, in no particular order...

Evil Dead 2
Dead Alive/Braindead
Night of the Living Dead
Phantasm II
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Motel Hell
American Psycho
Puppet Master III
Return of the Living Dead

And my #1, for which no movie shall ever replace it because it's the movie that originally made me realize flicks didn't need bid budgets or mainstream actors to be amazing?

Re-Animator

Honorable mentions:
The Howling
The Evil Dead
Hellraiser
Bad Taste
Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2
Dawn of the Dead (gets bumped slightly by Night, though 5 years ago I would've said otherwise)
The Descent
The Stuff
Night Breed

Lot of good ones listed already. Gotta second several of them specifically: Mad Max, Repo Man, Dead-Alive, Bad Taste, the entire Re-animator set.  Gotta throw in Attack of the "Killer Tomatoes" and "Killer Klowns From Outer Space" though, along with "Deathrace 2000" and "The Abominible Dr Phibes". HTH.

BTW, Repo Man is one of the most under-rated B Movies out there. SO overlooked, yet SO enjoyable.

I always cite the classics first:
Plan 9 From Outer Space
Robot Monster
Bride of The Monster
Gun Crazy
The Dangerous Years
They Saved Hitler's Brain

Then, some newcomers:
Starcrash
Shark Attack 3:  Megalodon
Pumaman!!  (Ed Wood did not die.  He's as alive as Elvis, JFK, and Hitler's brain, and he made this movie)

Also, I'm a sucker for anything with giant bugs -- Though some of these have some "good" moments, so be warned --
The Giant Gila Monster
The Beginning of The End
The Giant Mantis
The Food of The Gods

There, if you haven't seen any of these before, or any of these are new titles to you, then I'd say you're in for some entertainment!!

Hmm so many films, both good and bad. Recommend most drive-in fare from the 1950s through to the 1970s. Look for names like Bela Lugosi, John Carpenter, Charlton Heston, Barbara Steele, Boris Karloff, John Agar, John Carradine, Lon Chaney Jr., Godzilla. Highly recommend the following in terms of fun from a B-Movie persepective (but also recommend you check out most of the reputed good films from the 1930s through to the 1980s as many have B-movie elements too especially in the Sci-Fi, Horror and Fantasy fields). From the 1930 & 40s have to recommend Universal Studios Horror, Val Lewton produced horror and film noir plus murder mystery films and oh don't forget movie serials either, 1950s Sci-Fi which is a literal goldmine of B-Movie greatness and the late 50s emergence of Hammer films, 1960s AIP and Hammer films plus Italian sword and sandal epics, 1970s exploitation horror, More Hammer and Hammer knock-off studios like Amicus and the emergence of Kung Fu and Blaxploitation films not to mention all the knock-offs spawned by Star Wars which was something of a B-Movie at heart itself, 1980s more Kung fu, an outbreak of popularity in fantasy epics following Conan's success and the mass of end of the world apocalypse films that followed after the popularity of the Road Warrior.

A slight correction

When I mentioned Galaxy of Terror, I should have distinguished that I meant the 1981 Roger Corman production, http://imdb.com/title/tt0082431/ , not the 2005 release from BCI Eclipse, featuring four stinkers from the Polonia brothers.

Albeit, someone did mention Preylien: Alien Predators (2004), http://imdb.com/title/tt0491801/ ,which is on the 2005 release from BCI Eclipse, though I must implore that you not watch the other three.

Darn-it! I'm on the Polonia Brothers again!
Y'Know, I could swear I see these guys every time I drive past a construction site.

Depends on what you mean by B-movie.  I'll limit my list to 10 low-budget "so-bad-they're-good" suggestions, many of which have already been mentioned.

THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE (1962): About a head that wouldn't die, or stop talking.
GLEN OR GLENDA? (1953): This pro-transvestite documentary starring Bela Lugosi is Ed Wood's strangest film, and that's saying something
PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE (1959): Needs no introduction.
BLOOD FEAST (1963): Worst acting in a pioneering gore movie award
BLOOD FREAK (1972): Christian anti-drug gore film about a guy who turns into a turkey-headed monster after smoking pot.
HELL SQUAD (1987): Underrated flick about a group of Las Vegas showgirls who become a crack anti-terrorist squad
MANIAC (1934): Mind-boggling exploitation classic.  Everyone talks about the cat's eyeball scene.
SPACE MUTINY (1988):  Already mentioned.  Love those mystical ladies in diaphanous gowns dancing around the glowing ball from Spencer's Gifts.
DRACULA VS. FRANKENSTEIN (1971): Al Adamson directs the great Zandor Vorkov.
FANTASY MISSION FORCE (1982): Jackie Chan helps rescue Abraham Lincoln from the Nazis in Canada.  And that's far from the weirdest part.

If the idea instead is to pick 10 B-movies that are actually good and transcend their budget, I'd pick THE BLACK CAT (1931, Karloff & Lugosi), CARNIVAL OF SOULS (1962), CAT PEOPLE (1942), THE KILLING (1956, early Kubrick noir), THE LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS (1960), SHOCK CORRIDOR (1963, d. Sam Fuller), BASKET CASE (1982), FASTER p***yCAT! KILL! KILL! (1965), NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968), RE-ANIMATOR (1985).

You almost have to break this down into more categories. I mean we love bad movies, but the budget doesn't seem to matter too much. You can have a budget and still..... "stink". I guess I have kinda thrown bad into the B category.. So I guess that should be 2 different lists. Blaa blaa baaa... sorry I am babbling.

Top 10 Best of Bad
1.GALAXY OF TERROR
2.MOTEL HELL
3.DEVIL DOG HOUND FROM HELL
4.FOOD OF THE GODS
5.SHARK ATTACK 3
6.BUG
7.DEATHRACE 2000
8.RAMBO 2 (I just picked this up for $5 and was so impressed with the bad lines, it made it into my current "best of bad" list
9.WITHOUT WARNING
10.FLASH GORDON

Almost impossible to just have 10... I mean..
THE BEAST WITHIN
BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS
GARGOYLES
BLACK CHRISTMAS (ORIGINAL)
BAD TASTE
DEAD ALIVE
BEASTMASTER
FUNHOUSE
EVIL DEAD
FROM BEYOND
SCANNERS
PHANTASM
BRAIN DAMAGE
NEON MANIACS
PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE
BUG
EMPIRE OF THE ANTS

All hold a place in my heart.... I just watched Troll 2.....but I can't say that I "felt" it.

I must concede to SynapticBoomstick's assertion that Preylien is the best (well, least unwatchable) Polonia brothers flick.
However, in their case, that really isn't saying much...

I swear, I keep seeing these guys at that construction site up near MCV. One of them looked at me once as though he knew me.
