Title: Cthulhu and Tori Spelling
Post by: Dr. Whom on April 23, 2008, 03:58:15 PM
I'd forgotten all about this one. Apparently it got made.

The trailer doesn't do much for me. Strangely the IMDB page also mentions homosexuality as a theme, and a review says that Tori Spelling is great in it.

Has anyone actually seen this movie?

I signed up for their mailing list way, way back, and never got a single message.

The official site (http://www.cthulhuthemovie.com) lists some good reviews, including dread-central.com and S.T. Joshi (#1 Lovecraft scholar in academia), but no clues to distribution or availability.

The last entry on their MySpace page (http://www.myspace.com/cthulhuthemovie) is an after-screening followup from last October.

I'm guessing that they can't find a distribution deal that's likely to make back expenses.

Sounds promising. And Tori Spelling is ugly enough to make a convincing Lovecraftian creature, all she need is some algae on her hair.  :teddyr:

Ha! I was thinking by the title that this might be a 'separated at birth' type of thread  :bouncegiggle:

I made this picture back when this project was first mentioned. It still seems appropriate:

LOL

As R. Lee Ermey would put it, she's ugly enough to be in a modern art museum.

Does anyone have an idea why it is called Cthulhu? Judging by the trailer it is your common or garden supernatural thriller. Not a tentacle in sight.

If I recall The Call of Cthulhu, the tentacled one himself doesn't actually appear until closer to the end of the story. I'm guessing the movie mostly deals with the Cult of Cthulhu, with the beastie showing up later on. Or they might just be leaving him out of the trailer to save the surprise, a la Cloverfield.

And from a fan's point of view, it really doesn't seem appropriate to offer glimpses of Cthulhu ahead of time. If I wanted to get nitpicky, I'd even say it would not do justice to the monster to show him at all, since he's one of those Lovecraftian beasts that is barely describable in our terms. Still, that would not work as well on the screen as it would in print.

We'll just have to wait and see. I hope they've taken more than the title from Lovecraft.

Isn't there a tradition that when Cthulhu is mentioned in the title, he's not in the movie, and when he is in a movie, they call him something else?

Yeah Cthulhu doesn't really show up until late in the story and quite frankly, everything else in the original story is a build up to him.  Most of it is covering his fanatic cult.  I would like to see the film but if the great old one isn't in it, I would be a bit let down to say the least.
