Title: Do any kung fu experts know...
Post by: Nose Glue on May 29, 2008, 08:31:31 AM
of any films with live-action fireballs, mystic superpowers, flying and other Dragon Ball z-esque action. I have never seen anything that fits this genre of kung fu film. Besides the surreal ending of "The Last Dragon" and a few awful ninja films.

You should definitely check out "The Stormriders" and another film, "A Man Called Hero."  The three "Chinese Ghost Story" films might also be worth seeing for this kind of stuff.

Henry Dunn's reader review of "The Stormriders" is here:

there's tons of them- not the least of which is INFRA-MAN, the greatest superhero movie of all time.  there's two versions of PEACOCK PRINCE, the CHINESE GHOST STORY movies, HEAVEN AND HELL (available on DVD now) and many more.  google "kung fu fantasy" movies and see what comes up.

The MR VAMPIRE series is also worth a shot, but not much fireball action though. But you'll be laughing like few times before

in fact there is not much "flying" "fireball attack" in chinese "Kung Fu"movie
i know it just because i am a hongkong people

but that's a lot B&W Wusia movie hv "superpower" attack
of cause .... they just draw some "thunder" on the film
actually we hv separate "Kung Fu" and "Wusia Movie" (Chinese Knight-errant)

here a exsample for "Wusia" movie
(http://www.dianying.com/images/moviepics/rls1964.jpg)

in fact in the Wusia Movie
u can see a lot of "superpower attack" ....... "flying" .. (in fact we don't call fly , we call it "Hing Kung" , some KungFu whichn can let u step on the air and "walk on the air"

and u can find some superpower move in some 80's "Wusia Movie" (easy to find in ShawBrother's movie)

Nobody mentioned thw two mortal kombat movies yet.  Most of the special moves are done by the bad guys but Liu Kang performs his bycicle kick on Reptile.  An in the 2nd one he and Shoa Kahn (played by Brian Thompson of several bad movie and sci-fi show fame) turn into a dragon and a three headed worm beast, respectively.

i wish there were more of this unoffial genre. the new chun-li film will blow and WE KNOW the dbz film will be unwatchable. if anyone cares, the Venom Mob film "9 Demons" is packed with supernatural action (flying skulls, demon children who explode and drink blood, journeys to Hell) and as a fan of camp film, some will see the genius in the absolutely innane dubbing (The ancient Chinese protagonists are named "Gary" and "Joey") In a nice bad moment of cinema, the skulls grab a guy, bite into him and while flying through the air he magically becomes a hokey skeleton. One of my all-time favorites b-movies! God bless, Chang Cheh.

Ninja Hunt, or any Godrefy Ho film might apply here, though their style seems to be more based on confusion than supernatural power. Still, it's an interesting genre of films to check out, if you like mind numbing confusion.
