I watched SLEEPAWAY CAMP last night and now I'm in the mood for ANY obscure off- the-wall 80s slasher. Ive been trying to hunt some info down on this one called "Dont' go into the woods tonight..ALONE!" but it doesnt even have a wikipedia page. I HAVE however, been able to find this neet-o vhs art:
If i cant find that one, ill be happy with pretty much any 80's slasher besides the jason and freddy movies, or any of the crappy HALLOWEEN sequels.
Ideas?
(Also, THE PROWLER and SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE parts 1 and 2 look pretty rad.)
A truly awesome 80's slasher film is "Hellnight" with Linda Blair. Other than a disturbing lack of nudity, it has just about anything you could ask for from a slasher film.
Some of my fave's:
Slumber Party Massacre - Gets off to a really slow start, but once it gets going it's pure '80s classic slasher. Mad killer chases babes around the house.
The Majorettes - This is based on a novel, and has a rather weird plot. It starts off as a straight slasher, lots of boobs and blood, but halfway through turns into a revenge story. Interesting series of twists towards the end.
The Initiation - Another one that gets of to a slow start. A sorority pledge is having troubling dreams, and then her and her fellow sorority initiates must spend the night at a local shopping mall. Good atmosphere and cheesy scares ensue.
Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-rama - More monster movie (well, killer imp movie) than slasher, but it stars Linnea Quigley, Brinke Stevens and Michelle Bauer, the three scream queens of '80s slashers.
Hell Night - another college initiation, this time in a spooky old house. Great atmosphere, though some might find it slow moving. I thought it was really good.
Cheerleader Camp - babes o' plenty. Unfortunately they try way too hard to make this funny, which ruins any suspense and frankly is just annoying as hell. But it's got babes. And more babes. And yet more babes.

Don't Go in The Woods is not pretty bad, it's wretchedly bad. You've been warned.
Midnight (http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FMidnight-Melanie-Verlin%2Fdp%2FB000A6T208%2Fsr%3D1-1%2Fqid%3D1167085894%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Ddvd&tag=cargoship-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325) - John Russo's solo effort more along the lines of
Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Not a lot of surprises as this has been done before. Girl runs away from home and hitches a ride with two college buddies; they have the misfortune of running into backwoods Satan worshipers.
Just Before Dawn (http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FJust-Before-Dawn-George-Kennedy%2Fdp%2FB0009G3BW4%2F&tag=doctomenarspo-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325) - Another backwoods slasher flick that is well done, and is a lost gem.
Alone in the Dark (1982) (http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FAlone-Dark-Jack-Palance%2Fdp%2FB000A59Q2I%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Ddvd%26qid%3D1212277541%26sr%3D1-1&tag=doctomenarspo-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325) - Four lunatics escape from an asylum during a blackout and terrorize a doctor and his family. One of the better slasher films from the 80s. Also available in a 4-Pack (http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FAlone-Dark-Afraid-Relentless-4%2Fdp%2FB000O77LX8%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Ddvd%26qid%3D1212277541%26sr%3D1-5&tag=doctomenarspo-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325) with 3 other movies.
Final Exam (http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FFinal-Exam-Cecile-Bagdadi%2Fdp%2F6300146464%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dvideo%26qid%3D1212278132%26sr%3D1-1&tag=doctomenarspo-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325) - Definitely could have been better. An unknown, though clearly visible without any mask, slasher terrorizes a college campus. The slasher is basically unnamed and without any motive; he just kills. Low gore and only one nude scene. Only available on VHS.
Pranks (http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FPranks-Laura-Lapinski%2Fdp%2FB0000A2ZPK%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Ddvd%26qid%3D1212278462%26sr%3D1-3&tag=doctomenarspo-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325) (a.k.a.
The Dorm That Dripped Blood) - Underrated college slasher film. It has often been criticized for duplicating movies that were made after it . A handful of students stay behind during Christmas break to clean out a dorm; seems like someone else has a plan to clean them out. Wicked ending.
The Burning (http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fproduct%2FB000UDGO9S%3Fpf%5Frd%5Fp%3D316286001%26pf%5Frd%5Fs%3Dcenter-41%26pf%5Frd%5Ft%3D201%26pf%5Frd%5Fi%3DB0000A2ZPK%26pf%5Frd%5Fm%3DATVPDKIKX0DER%26pf%5Frd%5Fr%3D0TAT6KE7GWPWVBMTK1DZ&tag=doctomenarspo-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325) - Jason Alexander takes on a slasher. Probably more along the lines of what you are looking for: a summer camp slasher flick. Decent amount of gore and nudity. Also an early role for Holly Hunter, but don't blink or you may miss her.
There are plenty, but I can't think of too many right now.
Ok, you said obscure and not "good" right? lol (some of these are actually from the 70s)
Prom Night
Terror Train
Slaughter High
Return to Horror High
April Fool's Day
Motel Hell
Night School
Happy Birthday to Me
Tourist Trap
Alice, Sweet Alice

I agree with Menard about Just Before Dawn and Alone in The Dark. Really good stuff. You might want to try the original Black Christmas and My Bloody Valentine.
Intruder

It's been a number of years since I've seen Return to Horror High but I don't remember it being "good" in the traditional sense heh. from what I remember, it's an early Clooney appearance plus one of the earlier self-concious horror flicks (along the lines of Scream). Another 80s flick more spoofish would be Student Bodies.
Another one I thought of that I forgot to mention is My Bloody Valentine.

I heard My Bloody Valentine is great, but also heavely censored. Thats a big turn-off for me.
Let's see if I can remember some... I'll post some on both sides of the recommendation fence. I suppose you could take the anti-recommendations as a warning.
Pieces- Recommended for sheer hilarity of how badly made it is. Quite a bit of nudity, and some nice gore, if a little cheesy. Deals with a series of mysterious killings on a college campus, and the killer seems to be taking different pieces of the women he kills. I think they tried to play this one off as a giallo, but completely failed in the effect.
X-Ray- An unknown assailant is stalking a woman in a hospital after killing a few people. Two good death scenes, other than that I don't recommend it. It's kinda boring...
To All A Good Night- A group of teenagers are attacked by Santa Claus. Well, okay, not the real one. There is an actual reason why someone dressed as Santa is chopping them all up. Eh, it's okay. Not the best slasher I've seen.
Curtains- I don't remember this one too well. An audition opens for a role, a woman that was supposed to be considered is committed to gain some background on the role, but is left in the asylum while six other girls are being auditioned. The original actress escapes and tries to return to the audition to find that the others in question are being chopped up by someone in a mask.
The Funhouse- Not sure if everyone considers this a slasher or not. It's a lot like one of the After Dark movies, Dark Ride, being that film's basis for reference. It's about a group of teens that go to a fair and plan to stay the night in a funhouse overnight. While there, they witness an interaction between two carnies that results in one getting murdered by a man in a Frankenstein mask, who then turns out to be horribly deformed and a combination of mentally challenged and insane.
Unhinged- A lot like Texas Chainsaw and other stranded movies. Well, sorta. It involves three girls on their way to a concert and they decide to take the back roads, which is where they get stranded with a broken down car (I think they crashed if I remember correctly). A woman and her mother allow them to stay at their house and are picked off one by one. It's... well... different... kinda... I think it tried to be Texas Chainsaw, then at the end it had a "shocking" ending that would later be overshadowed by Sleepaway Camp. Both are quite similar endings, only one doesn't have a penis.
The Prey- Horrible, horrible slasher riddled with stock footage and filler. The film would have been great if it were left as a short film, but the director decided to try to make time by showing random footage of animals, animals, an annoying ranger, and more animals. Seriously. There is a scene where the ranger tells a bad joke to a deer, and another where he pulls out his old guitar and begins singing. Oh, and there just so happen to be a couple good death scenes in it, too.
Edge of the Axe- Never actually saw this one. Just saw the box at the video store and thought it was a Friday the 13th knock off. Thought I'd throw it out there anyway, in case someone could give some more background on it.
Invisible Maniac- As much as everyone seems to hate this movie about a picked on physics teacher going invisible and killing his students, I love it! It's so utterly abysmal and funny at the same time (purposely funny, no less) that it just struck a chord with me. I wish I could find this one on DVD, but all I can seem to find is VHS. The gore in this film is so low notch it's hilarious. And some of the items he kills people with! A sub sandwich? A fire hose?

That one is also known as
Hospital Massacre and stars Barbi Benton. I listed it in the thread of worst movies seen in a theatre.
Scream(1985?) is a horrible, horrible "slasher" about a group of older folks in a ghost town. I've never seen a movie where absolutely NOTHING happens so often. Bleeding Skull called it an "awful rite of passage", and I kinda see why. I'm pretty sure it hasn't been released on dvd yet (shudder).
Though not from the 80s, the Bloody Murder movies are some fun summer camp slasher flicks.
Final Terror was one from the early 80s slasher cycle that may appeal to you. A busload of young adults set up camp in the woods only to find that lions and tigers and bears, oh my, are the least of their worries. Interesting variation where the would be victims fight back.
Along that same line is one of Burgo's faves, The Creeper :tongueout:. This time, though, it is all men who are being terrorized by the killer.
Quite frankly, if you are in the summer camp slasher mood, The Burning is going to fit the bill the best; followed probably by Bloody Murder. Pieces is a good one as mentioned too; mainly because it has been available on public domain releases making it relatively easy to find, and cheap to get.
You also could go back a bit further to the movies which inspired the slasher flicks; Giallo Cinema. Mario Bava's Bay of Blood and Blood and Black Lace, as well Dario Argento's Deep Red (a.k.a. Deep Red Hatchet Murders and Hatchet Murders) are good choices.

this was actually based on a dean koontz book. the movie was so far out of reach of the book and mr. kootz (although i'm not particularly a fan) was soon ashamed of the final production that he wouldn't let him use his name in the credits...
Menard- I did not know that. All I remember about this film is being extremely bored.
SisterGrace- I also did not know that. I will have to read the book to see just how far off it is. I actually enjoy the movie to certain degrees.
_______
Update:
I actually found something on IMDb saying something a little different.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082427/trivia
It says that Koontz actually wrote the novel based on the screenplay, and they aimed to be released simultaneously. However, the film's production was delayed, and Koontz wound up releasing the book beforehand, which is why his name isn't on the credits, because he had nothing to do with the production of the film, only with the novelization that was supposed to be based on the film.
I'm seeing "PIECES" being suggested alot here. I saw a used copy of that for maybe 4 bucks up at this place by my house. I passed it up at the time because I wasn't sure what to think of it, but now that ive heard so many good things about it, i want to go get it. Trouble is, every time I go out there now, i cant find it but Im almost positive nobody bought it beacause almost no one has heard of it. Ill have to go back again and dig more thoroughly.
As for Bloody murder, i think i might go check that out, even though its obviously a rip-off of Friday the 13th. is it from the 80's? or at least early 90s?
Memorial Valley Massacre
A kid grows up in the woods without human contact. Campers come to the woods. He kills them.
The movie suffers from an almost unbearable amount of "comedy".

Pieces is one of those few movies that so utterly terrible that I can't help but love it! It's very fun to watch. It's just sad that you can't find the Diamond Entertainment versions anymore. Sure, they were crappy quality video, but they were dirt cheap and sufficient. Better, anyway, than some of the $1 DVD's you can buy out there.
Pieces is available in the Fright Night ten movie pack. You can usually find it dirt cheap. Haven't watched it in a while, can't remember if the video quality is as bad as most of the movies in those ten movie packs.
The Night Chills ten movie pack has a movie called Slashdance. Remember GLOW, the Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling, from the '80s? Well, several of their wrestlers star in this movie. You can imagine the acting quality. Girls show up to audition for some sort of dance troupe, and end up dead. The whole slasher storyline is forgotten about for the middle part of the movie as they prattle on about other stuff. Lots of hot babes in spandex though, too bad the video quality is too horrible to appreciate any of it.
And while I'm on the subject of hot babes in spandex, there's also Death Spa aka Witch b***h, about a series of killings in a health spa. It was actually pretty good (well, consider who's saying it's pretty good :teddyr: ). Interesting twists in the plot. Pretty sure it's only available on VHS.
And then there's Aerobicide. Haven't seen that in many years. Remember it being okay.

I just watched The Prey last weekend, and I still think it's quite hilarious. It's a shame that Anchor Bay cancelled their DVD release of The Prey because they can't find the original unrated print that includes extra gore. I wouldn't mind a clean 16x9 widescreen transfer of the R-Rated cut either though.

Happy Birthday to Me -- A personal favorite of mine. It has some pretty gruesome deaths and a wonderfully convoluted plot, but what I like most about it is the overall feeling of grandeur. I don't know the budget, but it seems almost like it was produced as if it were something bigger than the typical horror film it is.
As for The Funhouse, I believe the Dean Koontz book was adapted from the film, not into the film.

Doris Wishman's A Night To Dismember (1983) is pretty obscure, and due to a chaotic production (most of the original film negative was destroyed) it is probably not everyone's cup of tea. I'd say it works on a so-bad-so-good level while being a hallucinogenic oddity the same time.

Now THIS is an obscure 80's slasher flick:
Nick Mallard's lil' opus is mainly Ethel "remembering" footage from the original (and weirdly effective) CRIMINALLY INSANE (1975).
For the love of god.....avoid Fat Ethel 2.....I still have nightmares....
If you liked "Sleepaway Camp" make sure to see the two sequels. Both are superior, in my opinion, and number two is probably my all-time favorite slasher.
"The Prowler," "The Burning," "Madman," and "My Bloody Valintine" are probably the best slasher that never spawned any sequels. The first two feature fantastic gore effects from Tom Savini, all are well directed and have iconic killers. There's even some decent acting and writing in there too.
"The Prey" is my favorite bad movie as I just find it hilariously inept. "Don't Go in the Woods... Alone" has an awful reputation but I actually like it. Maybe its an acquired taste. "The Forest" is along the same lines and has the same "love-it-or-hate-it" reputation.
"The Mutilator" hasn't been mentioned yet, which is a great slasher, but only in the uncut verison as the gore is the only reasons its notable.
The "Prom Night" series has its fans. I liked Part II but don't think much of the rest.
About "Slumber Party Massacre." The series is actually much larger then you'd think. There's the three "Slumber Party Massacre" films and then "Sorority House Massacre" has been confirmed by the directors as taking place in the same universe. "Hard to Die" is an unoffcial sequel to "Sorority House Massacre II." There's also "Cheerleader Massacre" which was originally "Sorority House Massacre III."

I don't get why
The Prowler gets brought up so much or even gets good mention as it is one crappy movie. Heck, with some of the slasher flicks brought up in the last few posts, we might as well include
Happy Hell Night in this bunch.

Sorry, the correct words should've been "bad luck".
QuoteFilmed in 1979, the release of A Night to Dismember was delayed until 1983 due to a mishap at Movielab, where the film was being processed. With most of her original footage destroyed, Doris Wishman rebuilt the film using what remained, adding a narrator (Tim O'Malley, the detective investigating the murders) to constantly explain the proceedings, often before they actually occur. At other times, the narrator simply reiterates what is being shown on-screen, voices the other character's dialogue for them, or tells us what they're dreaming of.
Ok, so far, heres the list of what i want to see:
Sleepaway Camp 2 and 3
The Prowler
Slumber Party Massacre 1 and 2
Memmorial Vally Massecre
Peices
Happy Birthday to Me
"The Burning"
Madman
and that one movie that Skaboi likes but the I foget the name.
I'd still like to add a few typical "lost in the woods" or "summer camp" type slashers to the list. Really, anything that you can look at and say, "Thats definatly 80s".
Also, i saw Chopping Mall the other day. Awesome movie, but no chopping at all. Just a bunch of Firey explosions and lazers. Needed more gore.

Dude, seriously, check out My Bloody Valentine as well. Sure it's cut but it's a hell of a lot of fun. Ranks up there as one of my favorite slashers of all time.
As for lost in the woods....check out "Cannibal Campout". There is a fantastic DVD release of the film and it's honestly a ton of fun. I have a VHS copy in the old huge VHS case still around here somewhere.

It might not be that obscure but Sleepaway Camp is good 80's slasher.
Try JUNIOR (1985) a VERY obscure psyco with a chainsaw movie! I HAD it once on vhs. It concerns two ex-con chicks who fight a trio of nutcases ..led by the big dum retard Junior. His Ma is in the mix too (a guy dressed in drag,I think!). Really perverse. Fun movie.

I can't believe I found a video clip of this thing! Wow!

"My Bloody Valentine" is a 1981 one that I picked up fairly recently on a flipper disc that has the original April Fool's Day on the other side. MBV was pretty heavily cut by the MPAA as they were really cracking down on screen violence at the time due to John Lennon's murder. But it's still a lot of fun as far as slasher flicks go. April Fool's Day is a hoot as well.
Manaic(1980)is one of the better slasher flicks. Actually thinking about it more of a serial killer type of film but has lots of slasher elements.

Aw, man. iS this one of those movies that they had to go back and dub over the voices? Those are SO anoying, but I love em.
For an '80s slasher flick, you have to check out Camp Slaughter also known as Camp Daze. There is loads of gore and Jen gets the best line in the movie.
Something interesting I just found out by surfing IMDb... The killer from The Prey later played Lurch in the first two Addams Family movies.
