So let's say that you're organizing a double feature movie night at a local independent theater and you're going to show The Warriors.
You have to show something else. What do you back it up with?
The reason I ask is because I AM organizing an event like this. We've been working with Swank Motion Pictures to get licenses for the movies that we want to show and because we're actually showing these flicks at a theater, Warner Brothers movies are unavailable to us, which means we have to go through our schedule and replace movies like Exorcist and The Lost Boys with other movies.
One such double feature is going to be The Warriors and something else, what that Something Else is, we don't know.
I'm leaning toward backing it up with Death Wish 3 but my brother wants to do They Live. Neither of which is particularly appropriate. If this were you, what would you show as the b-picture to The Warriors?
The answer is obvious: A CLOCKWORK ORANGE.
I loved "They Live" it is one of my all time favorites... but it really stands alone and would not be a good B-side.
I would go for something like Hands of Steel (http://www.internalbleeding.net/2008/04/hands-of-steel)
Clockwork Orange? Totally NOT a B movie.
I'd say do it as an "I (heart) NY" double feature. I'd go with the original Death Wish (DW3 is way too painful), or maybe even Escape From New York
I'd look for something else with the word "Warriors" in the title --
"Warriors of the Wasteland" springs immediately to mind --
Actually, "The Warriors" is not a bad film. It's a B programmer, I guess, in the sense that it had a low budget & a cast of unknowns, but it's really a pretty good retelling of an old Greek legend.
Hey, what about "Quest for Fire"?? It's quirky, unusual, and involves the same themes of The Hero's Journey.

I gotta agree with Kester, ACO is a VERY fitting movie. I'm not sure I agree with it NOT being a B movie, but, I didn't read that as a requirement anyways.

Ha! That's awesome. One of my guys just did a review of Hands of Steel.
Here's the thing. We have to keep the movies reasonably high profile in order to draw a crowd. I could do something like Warriors of the Wasteland if I were down in Boston, but this is college town New Hampshire and the titles have to remain reasonably recognizable but equally culty. We've been trying to find a way to work Escape From New York into the lineup maybe this is it.
I could make it a theme night.
I Love New York!
Edit: Just spoke with the distributor. Turns out that Escape From New York is listed as Withdrawn, which means no one can show it. I'm starting to find that a lot of the high profile cult stuff is becoming unavailable. Can't do Dawn of the Dead at any time, either.
Would Battle Royale be viable? Six-String Samurai? Both have the element of trying to survive in a harsh environment against a bunch of enemies out to kill you.
What about West Side Story? Oh, wait no, that was WB too

You're actually the second person to recommend Battle Royale. We had to make a decision today, it turns out, so we booked Death Wish 3.
I'd like to do BR at some point, though. The license situation here in the states is a little weird. I think it's a Toho movie, if I recall, and if so, they're kind of a scary organization to go up against. Then again, we're just some little outfit in New Hampshire, so who knows? Maybe we could get away with it and play stupid if someone calls the cops.
We have to be real careful because our venue is a first-run theater and if we screw around without licenses, the theater is the one that winds up paying the price (and we most likely wind up getting sued).
Right now my brother, who is organizing this with me is pressuring me to book Amityvilles 1 & 2 - I don't think anyone will come to that show if we do. So I'm trying to track down the owners of the licenses to Re-Animator and From Beyond so we can do a Jeffrey Combs show.
Warriors of the Wasteland?
Quest for Fire?
Hands of Steel?
???
Call me crazy but I feel movies should be paired with movies of a similar theme. If I were programming this for a weekend movie bash I'd make it a triple feature of:
THE WARRIORS
A CLOCKWORK ORANGE
1990: BRONX WARRIORS
Why?
Because you really need to see the first two to get the third one.
Why?
Because the third movie is a spaghetti post-apocalypse flick that was made in imitation of the first two.
Another good pairing would be:
THE WARRIORS
SWITCHBLADE SISTERS
This could also be expanded into a triple feature of:
THE WARRIORS
SWITCHBLADE SISTERS
THE SISTERHOOD*
Do you see how the movies segue from one movie's theme to the next?
EDIT: Nevermind. I just read the above post. It's ALL moot now.
* EDIT x2: I mean, of course, the cheesy 80s era PA flick.
Oh man! 1990: Bronx Warriors would be so bad ass! I also don't think I'd need to worry about a license, either.
I have a great copy of that at home, so I'll have to keep it in mind.
Too bad voting's closed. I would have gone for SWITCHBLADE SISTERS.
There's a Jan Michael Vincent movie called DEFIANCE. He plays an ex-military guy who gets harassed by an inner city gang . . . and he ends up battling it out with them. It's very much a "B" movie and would make a nice double feature with THE WARRIORS.
First post, new here, yada yada yada...
Anyway, if you want a good double feature idea?
Wild Zero/Six String Samurai.
Rock & Roll Apocalyptica, baby!
I'd second (third?) 1990: The Bronx Warriors, it's such a blatent rip-off of The Warriors, they would go great paired together. I would think the only problem would be the name recognition.
If Death Wish 3 falls through, you should totally do 1990:TBW
While I appreciate the segue business, I still say that "Quest For Fire" IS a movie of a similar theme to "The Warriors"? That was my point, that both films involve a pressing journey. Plus you get a nude Rae Dawn Chong as a draw --
As was said, too late now, but this thread does lend itself to reminding people to always check first what's in Public Domain before scheduling events like these. Toho has been mentioned -- A surprising number of Kaiju flicks fall into and out of Public Domain all the time, thus no licensing or payment required!!
