Title: THE LOVE GURU
Post by: The Burgomaster on June 21, 2008, 09:00:02 PM
We waited awhile for another Mike Myers movie and the best he could come up with was this??????

If you think non-stop jokes about farts, snots, and urine are funny, then this movie is for you.  Some of these jokes are amusing the first time, but after about 45 minutes when you realize the movie just intends to repeat the same types of verbal and visual gags over and over, you begin to wish you could get your money back.  This will probably work best as a "guy" flick when it gets released on DVD (you know what I mean . . . you get a bunch of guys together, drink heavily, and cackle like hyenas at the sophmoric humor).  Other than that, I don't quite see the point.

I just got a call this afternoon from one of my buds who had seen this.  He said that he nearly walked out after the first five minutes, but then just kind of surrendered to the juvenile humor of it all and wound up enjoying it.

I'm not sure if I'll ever see this, it may be a Mike Myers movie but it looks a bit stupid.  Does Verne Troyer (mini me/ whatever the midget's name is in this movie) look a bit sickly to you?

I don't know Patient, I think he's always looked a little... under the weather!
:bouncegiggle: (well, somebody had to laugh at it...)

As for the movie, Burgo's probably the 20th or so review I've heard that said the movie was terrible. Roeper and that guy that isn't Ebert both said it was possibly the worst movie of the year. Someone else said that it was this summer's Norbit. The only positive reviews I saw were from the pair on "Reel Talk" and it's odd considering they don't seem to the type for dick and fart humor. I've seen some positive reviews from readers on Yahoo! Movies, but most of them sounded pretty canned (like they were being posted by interns and assistants from the studio) and include a lot of generic praise with no specific mention of why the movie was good beyond "It's the funniest movie all year!" or "Don't listen to the critics, this movie's hilarious!". My favorite line from a critic so far was Roger Ebert, who wrote, "Myers has made some funny movies, but this film could have been written on toilet walls by callow adolescents".

After enduring Gold Member I doubt I'll be taking in any Mike Myers films any time soon.  After hearing Burgo's comments, it makes me wonder when fart jokes are going to cease being funny.  I think we have reached that point, maybe surpasing it.

DarkSider:  Goldmember looks like a comedy classic compared to THE LOVE GURU.  It seems like they started out with a bunch of "bathroom humor" ideas and then said, "How can we make a feature-length film out of this."  The funniest part of the movie is the Vern Troyer blooper they show when the end credits start rolling.  Other than that, there are about 4 or 5 basic jokes that they repeat endlessly throughout the movie.

Initially, I wanted to see this, because I'm a fan of Myers.  But Goldmember was disappointing (outside of the opening scene with Kevin Spacey as Dr. Evil).  But after you see the commercials non stop for about a month and the jokes aren't even that clever, you kinda lose interest.

As far as d*ck and fart jokes, they can be funny, if written CLEVERLY.  But a fart joke for the sake of doing a quick one off, isn't funny.  For example, in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, there's a scene where jewel thieves are in a room trying to steal jewels.  The room is heavily sensored, with lasers and sound sensors.  They make it through all the lasers, then all of a sudden the chick farts and sounds the alarm.  Not the best I've seen, but it was unexpected and possibly the cleverest joke of that film.  I've seen better fart jokes, but I prefer it to be written well.

At first I wondered if this was a remake of Don Knotts's The Love God (the worst Knotts movie ever). I guess not (I don't watch TV anymore, and I haven't seen any previews). I really want to like Mike Myers; he seems like he'd be very fun to hang out with. I just have never been overly impressed with his movies, with the possible exception of Wayne's World, and that one was fun, but not on a level with the real classics of the comedy-skit-gone-movie genre (namely Blues Brothers and Strange Brew).

Yeah, I've heard nothing but bad things about this one. Here's what the National post had to say about it.

Quote from: Jay Stone
One of the Funny Jokes in the dreadful Mike Myers comedy The Love Guru is that the Eastern mystic of the title - the man who is going to help the Toronto Maple Leafs win the Stanley Cup - greets everyone with the salutation "Mariska Hargitay." If you think it's funny how the name of the Law & Order star sounds like it could be an Indian phrase, then you will be in heaven in The Love Guru because it is repeated perhaps 20 times, each time with precisely the same comic effect (i.e. none)...

That's the thing about bad movies...They can often be great, unless it's a bad comedy. Then it's just painful.

In addition to the constant "Mariska Hargitay" repetition, the movie also WAY over does it with names and words that sound like other (funny?) words.  Like the name of a village, which is pronounced "Hair on my kiester."  There are dozens of jokes like that throughout the movie (literally DOZENS).
