As I think everyone has noticed,  we are now free to applaud and boo each other again.  However, the new wrinkle is that anytime you do so, you have to post a brief explanation for your action.  So has that affected your giving of karma points?  I have found that, in my case, I am actually giving MORE karma since I am able to tell people why I do so.  In fact, I think I set a record this weekend for karma points awarded.  So what about you?   Are you giving more, less, or about the same?  Inquiring minds want to know . . . or at least, bored, hot, off-work-for-the-summer teachers do.

Maybe just slightly less.  There were a couple of humorous captions I would normally have given karma for, but when you need to leave an explanation, well, they weren't THAT funny.  I know, you don't really have to leave an explanation, but I guess I feel sort of obligated to since it's there.

Yeah, I don't think the lack of anonymity is as much of a factor as the slight inconvenience. The detour is sometimes a deterrant in those situations where I used to just give karma without a second thought. I still give it out when I really like something though.

From the receiving end, I love the new system. If I notice a change in my score, I go straight to my profile and see what I said to get the points. It's often surprising.

Me too, I like knowing what I said that was so deserving.

As for giving karma, I'm about the same.  I've actually been giving less but that is because I'm becoming more scrutinizing, I think.

Balances out for me. I'm probably not as willing to award someone now for just a funny caption or single sentence. However, before it was a bit awkward, I kept getting the feeling I was shelling out karma overzealously, now since I can give explanation, I feel as long as I have a good reason I can give as much karma as I want.

About the same here, as well.

About the same.  I just write "*chuckle*" for a garden-variety-made-me-laugh-out-loud post.  Sometimes I'll give a more detailed explanation.  But it really is kinda cool to so who's giving you karma, and why.

I also look at who other people give karma to, and why.  Kind of voyeuristic when I'm not involved in the karma transaction, but I find it interesting.

Also, I am distressed that I have lost my position as "User MAX smiting other users" in the official standings, and I would like to point out that I am actually tied with "the master" at two smites--but he gets listed ahead of me for some reason.   :bluesad:  I feel like smiting someone to regain my title, but who?

It's nice to know what people think when they give karma/get karma but my karma distribution remains pretty much the same.

That's because I offended him.

Why not smite a person whose not posting anymore and only was here for about a day.  Like Rambo, or hdjanks, or I know there was one guy who asked what karma was for and that sprung up a lot of jokes.

Just joking about envying my smite ranking.  Though, I guess I could become the board's designated smiter, given my religious authority.  If you check my karma history, you'll see that I smote one "poster" who was highly unlikely to be offended, just to see how the function worked.

Overall it looks like the new karma system is a winner.  Everyone seems to think it hasn't affected giving out legitemate props, but it should stop people from booing anonymously out of spite or otherwise abusing the system.

"About the same" for me.
