What 10 films are ENDLESSLY WATCHABLE?? What movies do you always look at...? Y'know how it is when you're flipping channels and THE GODFATHER is on (and kee-riest who hasn't seen that thing 50 times?) Still, you end up watching it...? I chose GODFATHER (take yer picka parts) for obvious reasons... but there's a number of films that I am always glad to sit through. These are not necessarily my favorite films, but the list of 10 below are movies that I find "endlessly watchable" and always look at if one happens to be on and I have the time.
1. PATTON
2. ALL ABOUT EVE
3. LAWRENCE OF ARABIA
4. THE THREE MUSKETEERS
5. SINCE YOU WENT AWAY
6. KILL BILL VOL 2
7. THE WIZARD OF OZ
8. YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU
9. THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES
10. VERTIGO
Here's my 10, what would your 10 films be?
Off the top of my head, ten films I always stop and watch if I find them while flipping through the channels:
AMADEUS
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD
NIGHT OF THE HUNTER
WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY
THE WIZARD OF OZ
YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN
THE LONGEST YARD
THE GODFATHER
PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE
2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY
In no particular order:
* THE GODFATHER
* TAXI DRIVER
* MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL
* OLIVER!
* DELIVERANCE
* THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (Charles Laughton version)
* 12 ANGRY MEN
* THE FRENCH CONNECTION
* PAPILLON
* BONNIE AND CLYDE
I recall the days not too long ago when Fright Night was always on SciFi and Puppet Master was always on AMC, and yes, I would always watch them no matter if something else/better was on. :teddyr:

Here's a few movies that I find to be immensely rewatchable:
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Ghostbusters
Reservoir Dogs
Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Airplane!
The Naked Gun 1 & 2
The Wizard of Oz
The Fifth Element
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
The Forbidden Zone
Singin' in the Rain
The Music Man
Josie and the p***ycats
Time Bandits
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen
Young Frankenstein
Star Wars ep. IV could also be on the list, but I endlessly watched that as a teenager, and while I still enjoy it, there are other movies that catch me now.
Wanting to avoid picking films I really like and would like to see again, I need to think about
endlessly watchable, but I'm inclined to cherry-pick another list from the responses just for fun:
AMADEUS
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD
NIGHT OF THE HUNTER
YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN
2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY
TAXI DRIVER
12 ANGRY MEN
PAPILLON
BONNIE AND CLYDE
RESERVOIR DOGS I don't find
KILL BILL VOL 1 nearly as watchable as
VOL 2, but I enjoy both movies...

Don't let it become a habit... Parts 1 and 2 are endlessly watchable. Just the thought of
GODFATHER waiting to be discovered... you have a big hole in your movie education... :teddyr: You won't be sorry to make the effort to see these two films. Nobody doesn't like
GODFATHER.

Peter Griffin would disagree.

All the Austin Powers movies.
The Godfather
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
Gladiator
Shaun of the Dead
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Species
The Wizard of Oz
Slapshot
The Naked Gun
Airplane!
There are many more but I can't think of them right now.
1. Monty Python and the Holy Grail
2. A Christmas Story
3. The Outlaw Josey Wales
4. Blade Runner
5. Dr Strangelove
6. V for Vendetta
7. The Princess Bride
8. Amadeus
9. Sin City
10. Gladiator

3. The Outlaw Josey Wales
5. Dr Strangelove
7. The Princess Bride
Some excellent choices, the ones I quote are films that glue me to the tube.
I'll have to agree with many of the titles already mentioned:
Lawrence Of Arabia
Dr. Strangelove
The Wizard Of Oz
Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory (original)
Slapshot
Airplane
Ghostbusters
Young Frankenstien
The Longest Yard
Hear are some that I'd like to add that I find myself stopping a watching when I find them on TV:
The Magnificient Seven
West Side Story
Return Of The Living Dead
The Blues Brothers
Emperor Of The North
Pork Chop Hill
Patton
Battle Of The Bulge
These are some interesting entries that I didn't expect:
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen - I have to agree that I like this film very much
The Princess Bride - Not sure why, but I couldn't get into it. I must view this one again to give it a fair chance.

Hey
Scott,
PATTON was the first film in this entire thread...
I have to agree with
RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, having sat thru the whole thing just the other night for the umpteenth time...
THE LORD OF THE RINGS (all of them)
THE PATRIOT
FLYBOYS
GLADIATOR
SAVING PRIVATE RYAN
MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL
SPIDERMAN
Kenneth Branagh's HENRY V
DOCTOR DETROIT
THE PRINCESS BRIDE
Disney's HERCULES

I totally agree. I've probably seen THE GODFATHER 100 times and Part II about 50 times. I saw THE GODFATHER at the drive-in during its original theatrical run. When Parts I and II were on HBO or Showtime or one of those channels many years ago, I watched them 3 or 4 times a week. Prior to that, I watched them every year when they were on commercial TV. When I got my first (Beta) video recorder, I rented both movies several times. Then I bought a CED Video Disc player, purchased both movies, and nearly wore out the discs watching them. Then I bought all 3 movies on VHS. Now I have all 3 on DVD. I am 44 years old and I saw Part I for the first time when I was 8 years old. That's 36 years of watching it, and I'd say an average of 3 times per year is a very reasonable and accurate estimate. This is ESSENTIAL viewing and one of the few movies that is far superior to the book.
Here are my endlessly watchable films.
1 Scarface
2 Airplane
3 The Godfather
4 Fast Times at Ridgemont High
5 Revenge of the Nerds
6 Christmas Story (I could watch this all year around and still enjoy it)
7 American Ninja (As corny as it is, I can watch it forever and not get bored with it)
8 The Terminator
9 Die Hard
10 The Last Dragon
11 UHF

Oooppps. Your right and you have another good one that I like to watch when ever it's on THE THREE MUSKETEERS.
I forgot about
Lord of the Rings
Terminator
Young Frankenstein
Blazing Saddles
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
still more to come.
Because I already agree with a lot of/most of the choices here, I'll try to confine myself to ones I don't see listed --
It's a Wonderful Life -- I own it, but if I'm flipping channels, I'll still watch it at least up to the first block of commercials.
The Seventh Seal -- I just showed it to someone for their first time, and still found myself wrapped up in its exposition.
Fires on The Plain -- Again, something I own. Not shown that often, but I take it down every now and then and still find it as riveting as the first time I saw it.
Slaughterhouse Five -- The film is definitely more involving than the somewhat spare Vonnegut novel that it's drawn from.
The Good The Bad and The Ugly -- Did nobody else mention this one? Really?
Frankenstein -- The James Whale 1931 version. Even after watching it my whole life, if you have this running on a hand-held minature DVD player, you can hypnotize me with it and steal my wallet on a crowded street.
Horror of Dracula -- Peter & Chris/Chris & Peter. Lurid red colour. Me like pretty colours . . . me must watch again, and again and . . .

Boogie Nights (1997)
The Silence Of The Lambs (1991)
Purple Rain (1984)
The Last Dragon (1985)
Outrageous Fortune (1987)
Poltergeist (1982)
Indiana Jones & The Temple Of Doom (1984)
Carrie (1976)
The Shining (1980)
I never get tired of watching those. I actually make it a point to watch Poltergeist at least once a year. Usually around July/August. Still one of the best summer-horror movies ever made in my humble opinion.

OK not in order but definite rewatchable faves:
The Maltese Falcon
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Casablanca
A Christmas Carol (1951)
It's A Wonderful Life
Colossus: the Forbin Project
The Wizard of Oz
The Thing From Another World
Jason and the Argonauts
The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934)
Honourable Mentions:

On the Waterfront
Blade Runner
All Quiet on the Western Front
Halloween
The Shooting (1967)
Nightmare Alley
Rear Window (1954)
The Odd Couple
Duck Soup
Duck Soup!! Duck Soup!!
Time was, this would pop up on late-night network or Sunday daytime TV all the time & yes, I'd always watch it.
Cable & satellite & the plethora of DVDs have killed some of life's little surprises . . .

IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD
Anytime, anyplace! :bouncegiggle:
And, naturally, just about any of the 30's-40's Universal horror films.
And the RKO 40's Val Lewton films (CAT PEOPLE, I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE, THE BODY SNATCHER, CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE, etc.).
And any Ray Harryhausen film.

Some of my favorite films are Universal Horrors, particularly
BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN,
SON OF, when they start to get hokey, I love them, but don't find them endlessly watchable...
CAT PEOPLE gets to me after awhile, I should add it to my WHO FREAKS YOU OUT? thread. On the other hand,
CURSE is a charmingly gentle ghost story, not quite sad, but haunting... I always look at that when it's on (TCM, frequently).
Quote

The Great Escape
Kelly's Heroes
Blazing Saddles
Strange Brew
It's a Wonderful Life
Smokey and the Bandit
The Longest Yard
The Running Man
The Terminator
The Star Wars Trilogy (original)
The Shining
Unforgiven
Raiders of the Lost Ark
OK. Hem. This is tough.
1. The Color Purple
2. Schindler's List
3. Baraka
4. The Bad Seed
5. Whatever Happened to Baby Jane
6. The Sound of Music
7. Short Bus
8. Beaches
9. The Long Ships
10. Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang
Bear in mind, these are NOT the ten best movies imho. I just think they're then ten that I'd stop to watch and call the office and say I'd be two hours late, if it came on the telly.

Thanks for really getting the thread and providing your list of 10! What a crappy list... :teddyr: :bouncegiggle: I like several of your films, but couldn't watch them endlessly myself.
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? I guess is endlessly watchable...
THE BAD SEED? Ugh, I admit it's magnetic or hypnotizing like a train wreck before your eyes... a remarkable film, but with that creepy child (
PATTY McCORMACK another for my WHO FREAKED YOU OUT? thread) and that hammy flipped-out mother (
NANCY KELLY) Ugh!! (Talk about a
BADMOVIE favorite!)
Saw, The Grand and literally fell in love with it. This is my dream movie, I cant recall wheter or not I've ever seen a movie with such memorable characters, but I should add that I do blaze quite a bit so my memory is never a good gaguge for anything. But trust that movie is nothing short of Amazing. Also up there is Sex and Death 101, not as funny as the grand but definitely equally as conceptually creative maybe even a little bit more so. I love the theme of this movie and its plays out very well, this movie is perfect for a hot date.

2.) Clerks
3.) Wizard of Oz

SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION was on my top 10 list but got the boot... definitely an endlessly watchable film, owing much to
MORGAN FREEMAN...
EDWARD SCISSORHANDS is one of
TIM BURTON's films that I truly love and pretty much always watch when it turns up...
THE GOONIES is underrated and misunderstood... really quite a fine film.
 Happy.
The BRAIN that WOULDN'T DIE
BRIDE of the MONSTER
The GOOD,the BAD,and the UGLY
WHITE ZOMBIE
The RAVEN (1934)
SON of FRANKENSTEIN
ROCK and ROLL HIGH SCHOOL
the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (1974 version,of course)

Morgan Freeman is a truly fantastic actor in my opinion. I'll stop and watch just about any flick he's in. Burton I like as a director, and while a lot of his flicks seem to focus on the "socially outcast, awkward individual' type, he seems to make it work. Ed Wood is another flick of his I enjoy and was gonna add it to my list, but I never really see it on tv, so I just pop in the dvd. I agree with you about Goonies...very underrated.

Conan The Barbarian

Something I forgot to put on my list . . . . HBO's ROME. I own the box set for seasons 1 and 2, and I can watch them over and over!! What an incredible piece of historic fiction!
One of my "endlessly watchable films" was on tonight: YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU and guess what? Yeh, I sat through the whole thing again tonight and laughed through it and even shed a tear at the touching end. Damn, I love that movie!
In terms of b-movies I never tire of "Evil Dead II", "Lifeforce", "Gorgo" and "War Of The Worlds".
As for "Good" movies - Any of the better James Bond flicks, "The Terminator", "A Fistful Of Dynamite", "Dad's Army", any John Wayne western or war film and "The Road Warrior".
Here's one I absolutely adore:
Shaun of The Dead- Absolutely wonderful film that works both as a comedy and a horror flick, with great moments of comedy, and wonderful homages/pieces of horror to make it blend beautifully. I have the dvd, but almost ultimately end up watching it if it's rerun on tv, like it has been recently on Comedy Central. Well worth watching if you haven't seen it.
In no particular order and all mixed up:
Conan
The Princess Bride
Alien
Casablanca
Hellboy
Ben Hur
Lawrence of Arabia
The Great Escape
The Guns of Navarone
Time Bandits
For these (and quite a few more) traditionally all things come to a stop until I have watched them through. I wouldn't mind having them looping continuously...but then I'd get nothing done.
Here's some movies I can watch any time (It was hard not to keep listing them to tell you the truth. There are a lot of movies that I love to watch over and over again.):
- JAWS
- Robocop
- Iron Man (Saw it three times in the theater; can't wait for the DVD!)
- MST3K: The Movie
- Six-String Samurai
- Revenge of the Nerds
- Beverly Hills Cop
- The Monster Squad
- Tremors
- Back to the Future
- Conan the Barbarian
- The Princess Bride
- The Wizard of Speed and Time

History of the World Part 1
Hollywood Knights

Liquid Sky
The Road Warrior
Sexy Beast
The Game

The "Dethclown" episode of Metalocalypse (I know, not a film, still endlessly watchable)
I'm sure there's more. .
And I agree that Total Recall is a damn good and criminally underrated film.
The Night Porter
The Damned
SS Hell Camp
Fade to Black
Teeth
Falling Down
The Machinist
The Secretary
Hated in the Nation
Secretary
Another Day in Paradise
May
Love Object
Das Boot
The Machinist is one I was VERY close to putting on my list, and probably should have. Great movie with a pretty good twist. Bale does and excellent job, Micheal Ironside plays an exceptionally convincing role as usual (albiet a bit short), and Jennifer Jason Leigh lets the twins out. Who could ask for more?

Yup, I can watch that movie over and over again. Paul Verhoeven really pulled out all the stops with this one. The over the top action , some of Arnie's most memorable one liner's, and ambiguous plot and ending(The movie pretty much leaves it up to you as to whether Quad really was dreaming or not) all combine to make this my favorite (yup, favorite) Arnold film.

TOTAL RECALL??
Total Recall is a totally rewatchable film. C'mon now. "2 Weeks. 2 Weeks." Great movie.
Totally. But the subject isn't "rewatchable," but endlessly watchable...
It's definitely in that category. Along with
Kindergarten Cop. A lot of Arnold's movies might be cheesy, but they're all definitely "endlessly watchable" in my opinion. Except for Last Action Hero or Junior.
They were god-awful.
Agreed. I can watch any Arnold movie over and over. It's very hard to pick a favourite, but my top three would have to be the Terminator, The Running Man and Predator. I like all of them, with the exception of Junior and Batman and Robin, although the latter wasn't technically an Arnold Pic. Total Recall is great fun, and I even like The Last Action Hero. Hey, it's a spot-on spoof most of the time. Unfortunately, it gets really maudlin in places, and turns almost dead serious at the climax. I appreciate what they were trying to do, but the serious/sentimental bits missed the mark. The sentimentality needed to be more smoothly integrated with the comedy, and the whole last third of the script especially needed to be reworked. But I still like it.

Well, Batman and Robin takes the case as far as it being Arnold's worst movie, but seeing as he wasn't really the 'star' and more of a co-star, I let him slide with that.
Last Action Hero, I remember being really disappointed with, but it's been maybe 7 or so years since I've seen it to honestly evaluate it again.
back to the future and the goonies
I'll probably think of more later and probably go over 10, but in no particular order:
Walking Tall (the original of course! ... "When's the last time you stood up in a movie theater and cheered?")
Back to the Future (mostly first one, but they're all good)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Earth vs. the Flying Saucers
It Came From Outer Space (OK, so I'm a flying saucer nut!)
The Magnificent Seven
Slapshot
The Last Waltz (featuring The Band, Eric Clapton etc.)
It's a Wonderful Life (sappy but great stuff, guardian angel always got to me :)
Revenge of the Nerds
Rocky (the original)
American Graffiti
More then ten certainly, but what makes all these films endlessly watchable are the little things in them. For example . . . There is a 13 second clip from "Lair of the White Worm" at YouTube, where you have Kevin, the boy scout in the film, knocking on the window of a parked car, to ask the driver for a ride to the next youth hostel. Most cinematographers, directors, writers would place the whole character in the scene, but the cinematographer/director/writer, as it is the same man--Ken Russell, shows only Kevin's hand and arm, when he knocks on the car window. But I never thought much about it, till I saw this clip on YouTube. As I said, it is the little things like this, that make a film endlessly watchable.
Well
BoyScoutKevin, I agree with your comments, if not with your example...

All good choices... I always watch
AMERICAN GRAFFITI when it's on, same of a few others.
I watched much of two
GREER GARSON films that were on TCM today,
MRS. MINIVER (1942) and
PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (1940) films I've looked at many times and
always find interesting. I wouldn't have thought of them, but they're endlessly watchable to me.
JAWS

Jaws, for sure. I could especially listen to Quint's Indianapolis monologue over and over.
Empire Records
Lake Placid
Deep Blue Sea
Jason X
Road House
The Quick and the Dead
Mars Attacks
Starship Troopers
The Fifth Element
Tremors
Plus pretty much any of the Roger Moore era Bond movies. Stuart Gordon and Sam Raimi movies, and well I admit to being endlessly fascinated by BloodRayne as well.

Empire Records,
Mars Attacks, and
Tremors are all great flicks. Empire Records is VASTLY underrated as a motion picture and I wish people would acknowledge it. Mars Attacks as well.
Jason X, while I love it personally (even own the dvd), isn't even a great movie, but it is perfectly watchable on a consistent basis. Especially on like, a Friday night when there's nothing to do. Great pick there.
Agree, Empire Records is terribly neglected. The dullest part of the movie are the first few minutes that set up the plot, other than that it flows perfectly. And come on, Rex Manning day was just freakin' awesome.

Who doesn't love Rex Manning Day?
I quote that movie a bunch when I can work it into a regular conversation.
This is an interesting thread for me as I used to manage a video store and we could only play certain certificates during the day. We watched the same films over and over, sometimes 2 or 3 times back to back. So, here goes.
Bridge on the River Kwai
Zulu
Close Encouters
Day the Earth Stood Still
Forbidden Planet
Drunken Master
Wizard of Oz
Oh Brother Where Art Thou
Toy Story
Shrek
The last 2 are for my 2 year old who plays them over and over and I still find myself watching and quoting the lines.

The only film containing Steve Martin that I like, I could watch this 100's of times and never get bored of it. A really funny film with good morals and it's also extremely heartwarming.

You softie!!! I admit if it's
JOHN CANDY I love it.
STEVE MARTIN is another matter (though not problematic as he apparently is for you...) My favorite bit is when they flash into skeletons in the hairsplitting near miss with the tractor trailers... :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle:
