How many people go to midnight releases for books, movies, etc? My wife is big into the Twilight series and thats all I keep hearing about is her venture out to Barnes and Nobles this Friday night to get the new book. I recall going to Toys R Us when the Star Wars prequel toys went on sale and having fun. All us nerds were rabid over getting a Darth Maul action figure. Too bad the film sucked.

I've never really went to midnight releases; i did however camp outside overnight for Iggy Pop tickets however. When and if Choke releases in the theatres here I will definitely go to its midnight release..
I once got community service hours by helping out at my local library for a midnight Harry Potter thing when the last book came out, that's about it.
I never do those things, like rushing out to wait in line to get the new iPhone or see The Dark Night ... it seems like herd mentality to me, hey if that's what you do and like more power to you, but don't look for me there ... I always wait for the buzz to die down and more often the price to come down.
I remember when the first iPhone came out and people waited for days in line to be the first to get one at midnight ... I was like it a freakin' phone for crissake. They paid $600+ for them and now they're about $200 on Amazon and guess what, it's still just a phone.
Last midnight release I did was for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It was funny watching all the people who hadn't placed a reserve on the game stand in line in the hopes that, despite being told by the GameStop employees ever 5 minutes that only people with reserves would be getting copies, they would somehow manage to get one too.
Before that, not exactly a midnight release thing, but I sat in 30 degree temps for 15 hours so I could get a Wii on release day. The only gaming system I've ever done that for and likely the last. Unlike something like the iPhones though, Wii prices have yet (and will not) go down and supply is still well short of demand the nation over.
The only midnight release I remember going to was for the final Harry Potter book. (Deathly Hallows)
It was actually pretty fun! I stood in line with some cool people and we shot the breeze the entire time.

I think it's a manufactured storage to keep the price high, I had a tenant that didn't have his rent money, but he had a shiny new Wii and a couple of games including Zelda Twilight Princess ... well his rent is paid and now I have Wii.
Moral of the story for him - get your priorities right. Guess it worked he's never been late since, then again it might have had something to do with me saying "That's a nice looking flat screen ... better be on time next month."

I like that, Cheeze: I'm also a rent payer but my rent is the first thing paid each month and I've been living in my house since October 1998 and have good landlords.
you can't mess with landlords, hell i got thrown out once by my own dad for not paying rent.
I've never did midnight releases for anything I don't plan to do that anytime soon. I usually wait for the price of something to come down before I get something and most of the bugs have been fixed (Gaming system, video games) or until it's released on DVD (Movies).
I'm with Cheeze and Trevor. I don't really understand the mentality of seeing a movie on the first weekend it's released, buying an album the first day it's released, etc. I always wait for the prices/crowds to die down. That's especially true with software releases: who wants to be a beta-tester and get the buggy initial release? I'll wait until they've patched it at least once.
Having said that, I guess I can understand going to one of those midnight release events if you see it as an opportunity to have a party with fellow fans, rather than just going because you can't wait another day to get your hands on that item of entertainment.
On the subject of Early releases for movies, Wal-Mart (or at least the Wal-Mart I go to) has their movies a lot cheaper on their first week of release. Sounds like a good deal to me.
I went to two Midnight releases. One was for a PS2 release. I reserved it almost a year before. Thinking back the only reason I went is that Gamestop has a bad habit of selling your stuff even if you reserved and actually put money on it. Since it was also a shortage when PS2 was first released it made me worried. So I just went and picked it up.
The other was Grindhouse came out.
I agree with midnight release though. I never had a urge besides that. Don't really care.
i went to gamestop at midnight to get super smash bros. brawl

They've done that to me a couple of times. One was when I had reserved Metal Slug Anthology for the PS2 only for it to be pushed back something like 4 months. I didn't even know they had finalized the date as Gamestop didn't call me or anything.
I found out on a gaming site that it had finally come out and when I went to get my "reserved" copy they had sold it to someone else. Morons.................
Oh yeah, I was going to post something about myself going to midnight releases.
It depends on them but since I work 3:30 to midnight Mon-Fri it makes a lot of sense for me to go to a midnight showing of a movie for instance as I'm up that time at home anyway.
I went recently to the midnight showings of The Incredible Hulk, The Dark Knight, Indy 4 and Wanted.
I've seen a ton of movies at midnight showings but I don't do that much hardly anymore for games, CD's or whatever. If the local Wally World has a particular DVD or CD out of the floor by the time I've gotten off work on a Monday, I'll swing by there and grab it along with groceries or whatever.
