I'm still waiting for Criterion to re-release Kwaidan.
Is Criterion EVER going to release the complete version of Kwaidan?
Why on Earth did they release a cut version anyways? It goes against everything they stand for. When Criterion releases a DVD, people assume it's the "uncut" version. Unfortunately, this was not the case with Kwaidan.
I sent an e-mail to Criterion, but I got no response.
Again, is Criterion ever going to release the complete, 183-minute version of Kwaidan?
If you want Criterion to release the uncut version of Kwaidan, please send an e-mail to mulvaney@criterion.com.
If you want a great quality (and fully uncut) DVD of Kwaidan, just pick up the region 2 Masters of Cinema release:

DVD Beaver has a great comparison of a few of the DVD releases:

Since Masters of Cinema has released the uncut version of Kwaidan, I was hoping Criterion would follow.
With the advent of Blu-Ray, we might see an update on this. I really hope so...
All DVD's contain the uncut version, except the Criterion DVD. Why?
Btw, if anyone's wondering what the fuss is about, this is an absolutely gorgeous movie. Quite impressive in all contexts.
I haven't heard much about Kwaidan, but I do hate DVDs of classic films that are released cut, with bad image quality, or without extras :hatred:
Feh - I remember when Criterion released this (and I bought it) they were crowing about how it was the complete version, since it included the snow witch segment which was usually cut for American audiences.
Feh, I say.

Really? When did they say that?
I can't believe Criterion would release a cut version.
I hope Criterion will release the uncut version on Blu-Ray. If they don't, I've lost all hope for them.
Did anybody send an e-mail to Criterion?
If we send them enough e-mails, they might get the idea.
The Criterion DVD also has manipulated colors.
HOW f**kING DARE YOU f**kERS MAKE A f**kING EDITED DVD OF KWAIDAN!?!?!?
f**k YOU, CRITERION!!!
EVERY f**kING COMPANY IN THE WORLD HAS THE UNCUT VERSION ON DVD, EXCEPT YOU LAZY BASTARDS!!!!

Whew. Glad I got that off my chest.
hey, just a question: do you read reviews before you buy stuff?
also: did we need two threads about this?
I didn't actually buy the Criterion DVD.

Why "
must" I be joking?
i just don't understand how someone can rant so hardcore about this without even having purchased the thing. great, you know it sucks compared to other versions. move on. i can only imagine how many people would have been killed in the explosion had you actually purchased it before finding out that it was an inferior product.

Have you ever rented a really awful movie?
After you rented the awful movie, did you run out and buy it?
...No, I didn't think so.
I'm not going to buy something that I know is awful.
(By the way, that rant wasn't "hardcore". It was just a joke.)

actually, i haven't rented a movie in over 3 years. just don't need to anymore. based on my preferences, reviews i've read, and the general vibe i get from the packaging, i usually buy.
my point though, was that your rant (used to be
rants, but they got merged into this one thread) seemed excessive and over-excited. it didn't, however, seem "funny", so i'd be surprised if i was the only one who didn't realize that you were joking, as you claim. my apologies.
I know it seems really silly, but this is bothering me. I can't wait any longer for Criterion to release the uncut version. I don't know why they released a cut version anyways.
:hatred:
How can I convince Criterion to release the uncut version of Kwaidan?
I really want to know...
