Just got to wrap up the climax, then go through and make sure everything fits together.
I just thought I'd tell you a few, non-spoilerish things about it and get some feedback.
It's set, sort of, in ancient China. What I've really done is mishmashed different historical eras together. For example, China is in the 1300s at the absolute latest, but when the Europeans show up, they're from the late 1700s at the absolute earliest. Really, though, it's not any "real" time period. I've taken some pretty big liberties with geography, as well.
The plot is about an Englishman named Jared who fled his own country (why is eventually revealed) and ended up in China. He served a stint in the army there and later hired himself out as a bodyguard/enforcer/hitman for officials and wealthy people. He did something stupid which caused him to fall out of favor, so now he mostly just wanders around on his mule, finding work wherever he can.
He meets a thirteen year old blind girl named Lan, who is a runaway making her living by playing an instrument called a liuqin for handouts. He feels sorry for her and takes her in.
Then a bunch of horrible stuff happens to them. Along the way, there's a giant centipede attack, the massacre of more than a hundred people, drug addiction, and the climax involves Japanese pirates out of nowhere. It's just that kind of story. Lan and Jared do NOT come through it unscathed.
I don't expect everyone to like it, and I'm certainly not going to hit up any of you to buy or read it. I'm just excited about actually finishing something for a change and I wanted to share.

Well, I certainly like crazy plots... with its giant centipedes and Japanese pirates out of nowhere, it sounds like this would make a fun B-movie. Hope you publish it and get it optioned. I admire anyone who has the persistence to complete a novel; I've tried several time and always given up after 4 or 5 chapters. At least I was able to adapt one into a short story.

Ok, well, I have to say, I'm not sure I'll buy the book if it isn't of either the pop-up or coloring variety.
