I wasn't sure whether to post this in the "Bad Movies" forum or the "Good Movies" forum, but I posted it here because it's more disappointing than bad. And it does have a few adequately funny moments to keep the viewer at least partially interested.
First, the title S*P*Y*S is obviously a nod to M*A*S*H, with Donald Sutherland and Elliott Gould starring in both films. Unfortunately, M*A*S*H is a classic and S*P*Y*S is just another comedy from the 1970s.
Sutherland and Gould play two wisecracking CIA agents who get caught up in the usual double and triple crosses as they romp their way through this so-so "buddy movie." The movie is at its best when it takes advantage of the stars' abilities to deliver funny one-liners and at its worst when it relies on (mostly lame) visual gags that were funny when the Keystone Kops did them in the silent era, but were not so funny in this movie.
A fairly young Joss Ackland appears in a supporting role, and the movie was directed by Irvin (EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, ROBOCOP 2) Kershner - - two additional reasons why you may (or may NOT) want to watch S*P*Y*S.
I saw part of this movie on tv once and I thought it was pretty lame.
