I started my new job on Sept. 2nd and everything is going very well. I've settled in nicely and am enjoying it so far.
One thing I'm able to do here is freely use the internet at my desk. I'm ok as long as I don't visit any illegal or porn sites. Anything else is fair game to be surfed.
It's weird having internet at my desk like this. At my old job they were so strict that if I right-clicked the mouse a box would pop that would say, "You are not allowed to right click."
So now I'm on all day from 8am to 5pm.
Are any of you able to use the internet at work?
Do they impose any kind of restrictions other than the usual on it?
By the way, here at my job we have Yahoo Messenger running at all times. In case I have a question, I can IM the person at the other end of the room rather than get up out of my chair.
If any of you use Yahoo Messenger, feel free to add me to your friends list. I get bored sometimes during the day when it's not busy.

We have realtively free internet, no gambling or porn. However I bet that if they are looking to fire someone they will pull up a list of sites that you visited...like Badmovies.org and all. How's the now job going?

I had the internet at my last job, you could go on anything except porn/gambling and well, anything that looked bizzarre. It was okay when I wasn't busy, but that didn't happen alot and our team had to clear the history when head office came in. :smile:
I work for a university, so we pretty much have unrestricted access, but that can be a pain for me. I'm in the IT Dept. and my guys have to deal with all the crap people download and such.
Going on the internet is no different than reading a book or newspaper. Naturally objectable material is always frowned upon and could get you in trouble. Were I work most everyone accesses the computer at times and there are no written restrictions anywhere.
For me it's usually on a Sunday when we are closed, but I don't post or interact with any sites because I know they could possibly pull up all the back files. That's why I only read a few news sites and messageboards. I'll wait till I get home if I want to post comments or even e-mail. Sometimes people just leave a site up all day and that doesn't mean your active on the site all day. Some pages are like news boards and update themselves every few minutes.
Your boss or ITS people have the right to look at where your going on the internet and how much time you spend on it. If it's considered offensive or your on the internet to much then they would have to let you know. They could just warn you, take your internet access away, or limit where you visit. Again reading the internet is no different than reading a book or newspaper at work in which case they would have to fire everyone. Either way it doesn't matter because an employee will just find something else to do with free moments.

One day we will have a more efficient society and we will eventually have to share the work. Working only 10 quality hours a week for instance. One day all the gobbly gook your boss thinks and does now will mean nothing as they strip away all full time employees to cut cost. Leading eventually to a some form of socialism or some type of communist state.
Well right now it's the slow time for my job.
I do tech support for an advanced insurance software program and it's been totally dead.
The customer can contact us either by phone, e-mail or they can use the company's website and submit their question there.
We went all day yesterday without a single support ticket. Not one.
So in the meantime I usually surf the web.
It'll get busy around Nov-Dec and then I won't be on as much. But until then, it's about the only thing there is to do.
By the way, if I delete my cookies, browsing history and offline files, they can still see which sites I've visited can't they?

I'd imagine that you still ave to go through their server to connect, and that would maintain a log independent of the computer you are using. They may well have a program running in the background that keeps records of your activity. Just a guess, though.

We don't actively spy on anybody unless Administration has some reason for us to look at somebody's usage.
If you are at a site that has it's own DNS server, you should know that everywhere anyone goes the URLs are stored in the DNS cache. Those logs make for some interesting reading.
I do the majority of my posting at my job. As long as we're not trying to get on porn sites, they really don't care. The managers act like that they're supposed to report us if they catch us but they get on it as much as we do if not more.
I do some posting from the mobile web at home but I don't have any internet service at my house at the moment.
