I recall and loved many one hit radio songs from my VERY early childhood...I'd like to share a few...and hope you will too! Enjoy!
The Tokens...Listen to it ;YOU know this song...I don't care who you are,of any age!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ya8JM6lNs3U
This is from a band I know NOTHING about...but I clearly recall the meloncolhy of it from my childhood.
the FLYING MACHINE...Smile a Little Smile for Me-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BR3xcZ-osqE
This one is a little more cheerful!
Edison Lighthouse-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tr6H1a7YUac
Ohio Express- Yummy,Yummy Yummy! (the Ramones should have redone this song!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qG1SVKipKZE
Hum-Stars
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rfbn3ieVUYU
Darksider-Hum reminds me of another band....from about te same period,I believe...
The Screaming Trees-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_13lCfKiaw8
It's a shame that alot of 'grunge' era bands went under when the buzz lost it's urgancy....I Mother Earth,, Mudhoney, and such. Much better than the so called "alt rock' crap that goes for music now. Alt to what? Originality, perhaps?
RC, I recall that song and it was around same time period. Seems there were a lot of good one hit stuff in the early/mid 90s. Heres two more...
Tea Party - Bazaar
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCye7v79Tz0
The lead singer reminds me of a young Jim Morrison
Big Wreck - The Oaf
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvuUwy8kcSk
A bit of a cajun swing to alt rock.
Don't know how 'obscure' you're looking for, but here goes:
"Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like That)" by Digable Planets
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pK-JkHDAW7A
"Naked Eye" by Luscious Jackson
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sn56sIX5KWE
Here's a cute little ditty from one-hit Bloodrock I remember from my childhood:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WQptxygSM8&feature=related
An even more disturbing tune, also from 1971:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEEy615Jzg4&feature=related
the Renegades- WAAAAAAAAAAY ahead of their time...! This is from 1966!!!! Sounds like 70's punk or metal!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7__x_3GaJ_g
Raffine: Bloodrock remind me of such obsure bands like Lucifer's Freind and Budgie!
As for Gimme that Thing...Ahhh! I rember that thing! (shudder!)
Reminds me of this...for some reason.....

I'm grateful for Toni Basil's hit because it spawned one of my favorite "Weird Al" videos:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwld8BZCo_Q
This has always had a special place in my heart:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlRXQEA0yj0
I had the 45 - the flip side was 'Bertha Butt Boogie'.

KING KONG: another hit from The Jimmy Castor Bunch!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08wjW321tDQ&feature=related
Dishwalla - Counting Blue Cars
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tsjXv5G7Vo
I've always like this one as a guilty pleasure...
Reveille - Permanant
(fan video)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IdaPQsS4PU
They were known for a few other songs but this is the one I recall getting played the most. I'm not a big fan of rap metal but these guys did it more towards the metal side.
Lipps Inc. "Funkytown"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUm6TCbEK0g
The Vapours "Turning Japanese"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQyClNEfncg
Bingo Boys - How To Dance
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dywh1p--OF0
(It is kinda catchy)
QuoteLipps Inc. "Funkytown"
Might I add in the Pseudo Echo cover of this song in the 80s. It rocks and it is pretty much their only hit.

THE TOKENS' "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" went to #1 in November 1961, a month and year very close to my own heart. Definitely one of "those" songs. 10 years later,
THE TOKENS record started getting airplay again (I remember that very well.) Always loved that record. I also always loved this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHAN7Qu0ZhY
(
LLOYD PRICE had many hits, not a one-hit-wonder, but that record is perfect for this time of year.)
STARBUCK "Moonlight Feels Right" :

Aahhh, that righteous marimba solo!
A friend of mine who played mallet percussion (xylophone, vibraphone, marimba) in our high school band was obsessed with that marimba solo and practiced for hours and hours and hours trying to learn it by ear. By the time he finally figured it all out and could play it note-for-note we were sick of it.
Really sick of it.
Really, really sick of it.
