Title: Rednexploitation Movies
Post by: Nukie 2 on October 04, 2008, 10:10:00 PM
The freakiest movies thread got me thinking about this.

Here are some I know of...

Vernon, Florida (1982) - Documentary film-maker, Errol Morris originally went to this small, backwoods town on a film about the KKK. The townspeople weren't pleased, instead, he made a movie on the town and it's people. The people who are interviewed are incomprehensible, they sound like are talking gibberish.

Gummo (1997) - A rural town in Ohio is ravaged by Tornandos and the fabric of society decays. Everyone becomes weird and nihilistic; they like to have parties, where they get drunk, cut themselves, and smash particle board furniture. Pre-teen boys have sexual intercourse with adult, mentally handicapped prostitutes.

Redneck Zombies (1987) - You've probably seen it, cos it's awesome.

Beware, "Redneck Zombies" has the absolutely WORST boob shot ever to be put on film. It actually makes the movie WORSE, , it's worse than any other boob shot in any other TROMA flick, , and that's saying quite a bit.

Hide and Creep - zombies invade a redneck town in Alabama.  I loved this movie, it's a horror comedy, with the rednecks almost more concerned with drinking beer than dealing with those damned inconvenient zombies.  One guy calls up the local TV station to complain that the coverage of the zombie attack is pre-empting the basketball game.  Gotta love it.

Dancing Outlaw A guy who lives in a trailer in WV tell stories of sniffing glue, hallucinations, sometimes thinks he's Elvis. Its fairly short but it takes you to another world, its facinating yet funny.

Creature from the Hillbilly Lagoon -- Best described as "The Shadow over Hicksmouth", rednecks are paid to dump toxic waste in a local pond, where a bunch of horny teenagers from the local college are doing water tests for an Environmentalism class.  The film is mostly bad jokes about beer, inbreeding, and fish puns mixed in with some mutation ("Look down his shorts," one girl says in a vague attempt to sound sultry, "He's hung like a barracuda!") The "actors" were also the entire technical crew, and several scenes switch from live action to hand-drawn, non-animated "animation" due to budget constraints.

The blurb on the case promised "Gratuitous gore and nudity" and while the gore is about Troma level in places, the nudity was lacking, and what was present was not only lackluster, but mostly man-ass.

The high point of the film, in my opinion, is the blatant homage to CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON -- a webbed, clawed hand reaches out of the water, and then withdraws, dragging its claws across the bank.  Then the hand does the same thing from behind a tree.  Then the hand does the same thing from behind a headstone in the local cemetary -- WHEN THERE IS NO WAY THE HULKING FISHMEN OF THE FILM COULD BE BEHIND SAID HEADSTONE.
