I use trendmicro internet security for my firewall/anti-virus/anti-adware security kind of stuff and I've not had a single adware/popup problem. I can't remember what it costs, but I got a couple year subscription for three computers.
Sounds like you got some bad spyware there RC.
I recommend downloading Spybot Search & Destroy and AdAware.
Run one, then run the other. That should clear a lot of it up.
After that, be sure to run both at least once a week.
The problem is....Tara is the administator..an she's in a nursing home. :bluesad:

This tool rescued my computer when it was acting very similar to what you described. I don't know about administrator privileges with it or not. It is run in safe mode, and if you can restart the computer in safe mode, then you may be able to use it.
You can find a fairly extensive list of spyware scanners and tools, many that are freeware, at http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html
A good, and free firewall and malware scanner can be found at http://www.comodo.com/index.html

I switched from Norton to Trend Micro about a year ago and I've had absolutely no complaints, either.
Sorry to hear that RC. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers. Take care.
Sorry to hear abut Tara, RC my thoughts and prayers are with you.
Best wishes RC, stay strong and good luck with the computer
At least it's a software issue, rather than hardware going bad.
Yep, you will need administrator access to install some of the anti-spyware programs. Once you do that and install the anti-spyware programs you should be OK. Some of those adware/spyware programs can get dug in. You delete them and they keep coming back. The trick is then finding the program that is "fixing" all the bad programs you are removing.
I noticed some good news lately. Intercage, which has serviced a lot of malware and spyware sites, was effectively blacklisted hard enough that their providers dropped them. They found a big provider to put them back on, but got dropped again. That happened about 3 times. It was like a bad Dracula movie, but I think that they are finally dead. Also, Alpha Red is now dying. They got sued by Microsoft because their (I believe it was) CEOwas the person behind Registry Cleaner XP, which was scareware ("You have 100 viruses! Buy our product to remove them." - all of which was a lie).
A lot of the lucrative malware/adware will probably move their hosting to Russia or other places they can find, "bulletproof - no questions asked" hosting.
I'm very sorry to hear about that RC. Best of luck in all things.

That's the handy thing about SmitFraudFix; it removes the components that were deposited by the spyware, including replacing the wininet.dll if necessary.
Adaware, and other programs that claim to work only treat the symptoms, but don't do anything to remove the dlls that were placed into the system, so it keeps coming back.
The worst spyware I had was several years ago where it replaced explorer.exe with its own version; it basically turned Windows into spyware, and the only way to defeat was to reinstall windows; unless, for whatever reason you may have done this, you had backed-up Windows core components and replaced them through DOS.
Even before that, there used to be a freeware program called HandyBits Virus Integrator that allowed you to integrate several virus scanners to run in tandem, and it worked to that function. It, alas, was also spyware that collected info on you. Of course, you could remove it from your system; on the way out, though, it would uninstall every hardware component in Windows and Windows would have to do a rescue and reinstall everything from the ground up. The truly embarrassing part is that many sites made this program available for download, and some even praised it for its features, even anti-virus sites.
I generally am comfortable with freeware from Major Geeks, but I would warn against trusting freeware, or even paid software, from a download site as most of them are only interested in having as many programs available for download as possible and getting anything listed is too easy. Download.com is one of the worst for this as they don't check things and have listings bloated with false reviews. They still have malicious software all over the site of which legitimate reviewers have screamed about to no effect. Which pretty much means check out reviews across several download sites to see what people may actually be saying about a program before downloading and installing it on one's system.
RC, stay strong brother and we'll keep you and yours in our thoughts and prayers.
