How do you prefer your popcorn? I have a hot air popper at home and IMHO microwave popcorn doesn't even compare to it. Although, I will eat microwave popcorn from time to time. I stick to the salt and butter thing. Right now I have my son hooked on it as well. He loves watching the popcorn pop in the popper.
Put the kernals in a pot with oil on the bottom and leave it on the stove, nothing better.

Absolutely. That's the way we did it when I was a kid. We had one of those poppers with the lid that flipped over to become a bowl, but the process was the same. Prior to that, we had a wire basket with a handle, which was equally effective over a campfire or a stove, but also a potential fire hazard. Over the years, I've tried other, more convenient, ways - microwave, hot air, crappy bagged stuff, but nothing beats popcorn popped on the stove in oil.
I recently re-discovered that when we had our first family movie night a couple of months ago. My wife and daughter don't tolerate some of the ingredients in the microwave stuff, so I just got some plain old popping corn, threw some olive oil and margarine into the big pot and made probably the best popcorn I'd had in years. Added a little salt and some more melted margarine, and it was the perfect accompaniment to our screening of Garfield, which was better than I expected. I believe it might even have been the first time my daughter tasted popcorn. It was just a great evening, and we've made popcorn that way ever since.
I'm not too picky with how popcorn is made. Just as long as it's not stale and I'm a happy camper.
The best popcorn I ever ate was at Sea World in Texas in 1987.
It had a gourmet taste I've never tasted since. Delicious!
My parents used to use one of those noisy countertop poppers. At the top it had a downward pointing vent that shot the popped corn into a bowl you sat underneath.
It made decent popcorn but it was loud. I can still hear that high pitched whine in my head if I concentrate hard enough.
When it comes to microwave popcorn, you definitely get what you pay for.
The expensive stuff is better.
Stay away from the cheap stuff, it's bad for you. Ever looked at the nutrional information on a box of the cheap stuff? It's loaded with trans fat.
Sometimes 5 grams per serving. And since most microwave popcorn bags contain at least two servings...
I buy the Orville Redenbacher Ultimate Butter with no trans fat.

Last year they consolidated some of our schools and they had a huge auction of supplies and they had a popcorn machine, so I bought it as nobody seemed to want to bid on it. Actually I've never seen a popcorn machine in the schools around here so I have no idea where it came from.
It was the cart style with the wheels and I think I got a life time supply of popcorn bags with it too. 2 cases each with a 1000 bags and another box of per measured popcorn/butter and oil. I'm still using what I bought, don't know what the shelf life is, but it still taste good. It pop's it just like movie popcorn.
I can't complain I got it for $35.00

I definitely belong to the pot-and-oil-crowd, but an own popcorn cart is plain awsome!

Hash oil goes well in a joint.
As to popcorn I usually only have it on a Tuesday night, after Aikido as a snack, and I'm too tired to make it myself so I go for one of them 94% fat free mini bags. The dog has gotten pretty good at catching pieces I toss him. I suppose if I were to get off my lazy ass on a movie night I'd use the wok and make homemade popcorn, with some melted butter and salt.
Gross story: I know someone who was living in some shady student flat complete with vermin and holes in the walls, and he went to make popcorn with an old air popper kept under the cabinets. Well, he set it up, plugged it in, poured in his kernels and turned it on, and seconds later about a dozen scalded roaches came rushing out of it.
I've never made popcorn with pot-oil so it's something that I may have to try in the future. I just use the microwave bags for convenience purposes since but I am ready to try it with the stove instead.
I like mine sweet! :teddyr:

I think air-popped roaches would be a little bland. You probably want to deep-fry them, like locusts, to bring out the flavor.

Do a "weed", "oil", and "popcorn" google search and you'll be as surprised as I was...
I like sweet also...my grandpa made a popcorn maker that had a hole in the lid with a bent hanger stuck into it so you could turn a handle to mix the popcorn and oil on the bottom of the pot. When I got a hold of this ingenious invention, I added sugar, wah..la..the best popcorn ever. :teddyr: :bouncegiggle:
Cripes! It's Poogie! Long time,no see!!!!
Ok...I gotta go with the old timers...hot oil...and melted butter. And salt! I use Popeye brand popcorn! (though ain't seen it in a while....)
Cripes....you're right it's me...Hi to you, missed you RC...you stay well now, ok..
