It was only a matter of time... :teddyr:
1) Ghost Rider
(http://www.logoi.com/pastimages/img/ghost-rider-02.jpg)
My all time favourite comic book hero/anti-hero if you will. First appeared in 1972, created by Roy Thomas & Gary Friedrich. I own all the 80's-early 90's Ghost Rider comics and in my opinion he was best pencilled by Don Perlin. Recently transferred to film, being portrayed by a mis-cast Nicholas Cage (damn celebrity fan-boys!). I hated the film, too many silly moments, too much CGI (I think it could have been made without), a really bad version of Blackheart, terrible goofy looking bike...just aload of rubbish really. Ghost Rider has featured in some decent cross-over graphic novels and I liked the Ghost Rider 2099 run, back in the mid-90's.

No.2 - Asterix, capable of wrecking an entire Roman legion. Goscinny and Uderzo's graphic novels were probably the reason for my interest in history. Don't forget Obelix and Dogmatix as well!
3) Batman
(http://www.starstore.com/acatalog/Batman_Comic_smoke.jpg)
No explaination needed, created by Bob Kane in 1939. I have a collection of late 80's - early 90's Batman comics, when he was being drawn by Frank Miller, I think this was the best period of the dark knight's story. The death of Robin, the emergence of Nightwing and Bane breaking Batman's back in the excellent "Knightfall" issues. Batman has survived decades and continues to appeal to adults and children alike, spawning tons of merchandise, tv shows and great films (barring Batman & Robin of course!)
With election day and all, it's only fitting to bring up...
No.4 - Captain America - Though I wasn't always a fan of the Sentinel of Liberty (and his last three movies gave me gas), under the right creative team the icon works. I think he works especially well in stories where he has to differentiate between doing what's "patriotic" and what's better for mankind as a whole. The current storyline by Ed Brubaker post-assassination with Bucky assuming the mantel has probably been one of the best Cap stories EVER. Though there will always be a certain magic to the good ol' "Hitler walloping" Cap too. :teddyr:
5) Silver Surfer
(http://www.samruby.com/Heroes/SilverSurfer/SilverSurfer.gif)
My brother's favourite comic hero of all time. Silver Surfer is a really cool character, that is good representation of what became the "Marvel Universe". Bringing in new characters and introducing stories that took place beyond earth. Silver Surfer was always torn between being the servant to his master, Galactus and saving planets and the lives of those he loved. Silver Surfer comics always have cool covers aswell, I have a couple of awesome foil covers. Here's hoping he gets some credibility back when the Surfer film is made, as I loathed FF4: Rise Of Silver Surfer. They made him a joke.
6.) Alfred E Neuman
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/19/Mad30.jpg)
A magazine that I have read since I was a kid and inspired some of my wise @ss humor. I have to pay tribute to the poster boy here. (sorry for the large image...I'm too lazy to look for a smaller one...)
7) Hobgoblin
(http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/marveldatabase/images/thumb/b/ba/Hobgoblin_(Macendale).jpg/200px-Hobgoblin_(Macendale).jpg)
My favourite Spiderman villain, much more sinister and cooler looking than the Green Goblin.
No.8 - Hulk - My all time favorite. The perennial "Jekyll and Hyde" of the Marvel Universe, he's the mightiest mortal on the face of the Earth but all he's ever wanted was to be left alone. Hulk's the strongest one there is, so don't make him hungry... you wouldn't like him when he's hungry.
9) Spawn
(http://spawn.home.sapo.pt/spawn1.jpg)
10.) Bane
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/59/Bane4s.png)
A complete bad @ss who was successful in psychologically and physically beating the snot out of Batman.
No.11 - Cal McDonald - Steve Niles' hard boiled noir b-horror private eye. Kinda like a four-color Kolchak only with a chemical abuse problem and a s**tty attitude. He pals around with a zombie, pops pills, drinks hard, and has more snarky comments and comebacks than Bruce Campbell and Roddy Piper combined! Favorite Cal McDonald mystery? In the "
Love Me Tenderloin" one-shot Cal is called upon to solve a series of deaths caused by... a golem made of meat. Here's to hoping the talk of a Cal McDonald movie works out! Groovy.
10. Superman. Surprised nobody's added him yet, seeing as he's one of the most successful comic book superheroes, and the model on which superheroes have been based for nearly 80 years. Something about this story of a god among men has always appealed to me. He's powerful enough for some really epic battles, yet he's also had some really cool stories with human villains like Luthor matching his powers with cunning.
13) War Machine
(http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/2082/warmachine1nr7.gif)
14.) Spy Vs Spy
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/cd/Spy-vs-spy.JPG)
Another great out of Mad Magazine, these two were never happy unless they were scheming to kill each other. I actually have a tattoo on my arm of them shaking hands...with bombs behind their backs of course. :teddyr:
15) Durham Red
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3097/2607966184_d424826794_o.jpg)
Sexy space vampire from the 2000AD comics. My favourite female comic book character, sadly ripped-off in the form of Blood Rayne.
16.) Prince Namor The Submariner
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/eb/Sub-Mariner1968n1.jpg)
One of the original fellows who got the Marvel machine rolling way back in the day.
17) Judge Dredd
(http://forbiddenplanet.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/2000%20AD%20prog%201561%20Judge%20Dredd%20Boo%20Cook.jpg)
"I Am The Law!"
18.) Spiderman
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/74/Spider-Man547.jpg)
I really think he shows the human side of comic book heroes to a tee. Here is a guy with amazing power fighting for the right things in the world. But in his "real" life he has to make rent, battle colds and deal with relationships both romantic and otherwise.
19.) The Joker
(http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr317/LunaticJoker/dajoker.png)
One of the best written comic characters in history. Batman's arch-enemy and has been included in nearly every incarnation of the Bat. Notably played at various times by Mark Hamill, Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger and Cesar Romero, he's probably the most well known and most sociopathic villain in comic history, depending on the timeframe.
20.) Thor
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/aa/Thor126.jpg)
He is full of himself, knows he's bad ass and isn't afraid to talk about it as he beats the ever living crap out of his adversaries.
22. Lex Luthor. I couldn't add Superman without adding Luthor. Whether a mad scientist, career criminal or corrupt billionaire, this guy has managed to be Superman's greatest adversary with no superpowers whatsoever. Has no qualms about pitting his intellect against the Man of Steel's many powers. That takes a serious set of cajones.
23. Cassidy
(http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/1280/cassidydp3.jpg)
23) Doctor Doom
(http://www.samruby.com/Villains/DoctorDoom/DrDoomChap.gif)
The most famous enemy of the Fantastic Four and another perfect example of a villain being far cooler than the heroes.
(Now upto 24 people)
24.) Raphael from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee232/reginararamos/The%20TMNT/TEENAGE%20MUTANT%20NINJA%20TURTLES/RAPHAEL.gif)
Angry, sarcastic, and full of emotion. I can't say he's the 'heart' of the team, but the comic books wouldn't be the same without him.
25) Slaine
(http://www.internationalhero.co.uk/s/slaine2.jpg)
The horned god, the future king of Ireland, who slays dragons and all sorts of nasty beasts in the 2000AD comics.
26. Iron Man
(http://images.wikia.com/marveldatabase/images/2/21/Iron_Man_216.jpg)
Ultimate awesomeness
27) Captain Marvel
(http://www.leaderslair.com/legacy/logo1.gif)
28. The Flaming Carrot :teddyr:

29) Red Skull
(http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/0/1093/97000-92028-red-skull_super.jpg)
30.) Magneto
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/6b/Magslee.PNG)
Highly intelligent and a man with a fine old mutant plan, he makes for a great and powerful villain.

In response, I give you this:
Peter Porker, The Spectacular Spider-Ham
32.) The original Human Torch
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/66/Avengerswescoast50.png)
Another one of the original comic book characters from Marvel.
33. Venom
(http://www.samruby.com/Villains/Venom/Venom.gif)
Spiderman's greatest enemy in my opinion, pushed him to the limit so many times, being both brutal at yet moral.
I couldn't find a picture but for 34. I'll vote Monroe. Mad magazine's answer to the most pitiful idea of a teenager you could think of.
35) Galactus
(http://www.mcnabbstudios.com/whats_new/topps_cards/galactus.jpg)
May be the largest character in the Marvel Universe. Galactus threatened to devour the planet Zenn-La, but was persuaded by native Norrin Radd to spare it in exchange for becoming his new herald. Galactus transformed Radd into the Silver Surfer, suppressing his morals so that he could lead Galactus to inhabited worlds to consume.
No.36 - Machine Man - I never really liked the guy when he debuted in Marvel's
2001: A Space Odyssey series back in the '70s, nor did I like him when he became "X-51" sometime in the '90s. However, after Warren Ellis got a hold of him and the rest of his
Nextwave teammates, I enjoy his new back talking robot supremacist personality. It's even better now that he's the star of
Marvel Zombies Vol. 3 too. :teddyr:
37.) The Penguin
(http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f149/cloudburst9/Batman/141205-penguin_150.jpg)
Personally, I've always been a 'marvel' fan as opposed to a DC fan. However, Batman is my favorite DC hero, mostly because I feel he's got one of the better 'rogue's gallery', in part because of The Penguin. Penguin's always been a favorite character of mine.
38) The Punisher
(http://www.thepunisher.co.uk/assets/images/ThePunisher.gif)
A man with no superpowers, who is just filled with the need for vengeance and has a large supply of guns. Rambo for the Marvel Universe and a character who can be a plausible feature in most crossovers. The film adaptations suck tho'.
39.) Gambit
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/91/Newgambit.jpg)
More than anything the guy oozes coolness and his mutant power rocks.
40) Death's Head
(http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/marveldatabase/images/thumb/7/7c/Deaths_Head_2_Vol_1_1.jpg/300px-Deaths_Head_2_Vol_1_1.jpg)

Hey CC, what did you think of the Garth Ennis - Doug Braithwaite "What If" style one-shot
The Punisher Kills the Marvel Universe? I personally enjoyed it and thought it was entirely feasible (or at least as feasible as you can get for a comic book world), but I know a number of people I've met thought it was a stupid, pointless story.
No.41 - Milk & Cheese! - The spawn of Evan Dorkin and probably one of the funniest (and most popular) indy comics ever printed, the carton of hate and wedge of spite committed senseless comic violence on random people while spouting nonsensical battle cries. Even funnier? The series lasted six or seven issues like this... and it was still funny! :teddyr:

Yeah I thought it was good, didn't see why people thought it was a stupid idea. I mean, there's been way more sillier stuff take place, characters have died countless times and come back. I guess Punisher would have a hard job really considering everyone else's powers, but Marvel can do what they like and it was something different.

Same. I think it really bugged me though when a friend told me he thought it was brilliant when DC revealed that Batman had plans to take down everyone in the Justice League, but that when the Punisher did so in that book that same friend thought it was the stupidest thing he'd seen in years... Of course he's an unabashed DC fanboy so he's biased on the topic, but still.
43) Cloak & Dagger
(http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/marveldatabase/images/thumb/8/89/Cloak_and_Dagger_v.1_1.jpg/300px-Cloak_and_Dagger_v.1_1.jpg)
44.) Dr. Octopus
(http://i314.photobucket.com/albums/ll429/JC_Armstrong/Superheroes/DrOctopus.jpg)
Spider-Man has some good villains, I feel. Second only to Batman.
45) Juggernaut
(http://www.samruby.com/Villains/Juggernaut/JuggernautPunch.gif)
Originally an X-Men villain created by Stan Lee & Jack Kirby in 1965, Juggernaut has ventured into other comics within the Marvel universe. He was a main character and actual hero in the Excalibur series throughout the 90's.
No.46 - Bullseye - speaking of great villains, Daredevil's arch-nemesis is a bats**t crazy piece of work. Able to hit any target and turn anything into a weapon, he really came to the spotlight during Frank Miller's now classic run on Hornhead's life. Daniel Way also wrote a fun pair of mini-series for the heartless maniac over recent years (including one where he's hired to take out the Punisher) that were perfected with Steve Dillon on pencils.

52.) Jonah Jameson
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a7/Jjonahjameson.jpg)
The ultimate penny pinching boss whos an all around prick.
53) Rogue
(http://samsmarvelloussite.com/rogue3.gif)
Sexy southern belle, who first appeared back in 1981. Rogue possesses the mutant ability to absorb psyches and abilities of individuals or several beings at once.
54.) Doomsday
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/20/Doomsdayannual1995.jpg)
One of few enemies that got the best of Superman...
55) Carnage
(http://ui13.gamespot.com/620/16108carnage400_2.jpg)
The most twisted and sick villain ever. Carnage's following grew huge along with Venom's, but many fans complain that spin-off/side stories were just gore-fests with no decent story...those people are stupid.
I especially enjoyed "Mindbomb" and "Maximum Carnage" which gave very dark and bizzare back story to the character, Cletus Kasady, a much more sinister version of Venom by a country mile. First appeared in 1992.
56.) Usagi Yojimbo

Beat me to it, sir. Good call.
No.57 - Tintin. Herge's intrepid, bequiffed boy reporter encountered everything from Al Capone to the Yeti, even travelling to the moon on one occasion. He also has the best set of sidekicks of any hero IMHO.

59.) Dick Tracy
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/4b/Gould1947.jpg)
Yes I know he was known more for the comic "strip" but he did have a comic book run in the 40s through the 60s.
60) Nightcrawler
(http://img65.imageshack.us/img65/7097/nightcrawler001p00fc8jb.jpg)
My favourite X-Men character. A mutant of German extraction, Nightcrawler possesses superhuman agility and the ability to teleport. His physical mutations include blue skin, three-toed and -fingered feet and hands, yellow eyes, and a prehensile tail. In Nightcrawler's earlier comic book appearances he is depicted as being a happy-go-lucky practical joker and teaser, and a fan of swashbuckling fiction. First appeared in 1975.
61.) Beast
(http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr90/marvelpix/x-men/beast-1.jpg)
Hank McCoy was introduced way back in 1963 as an original member of the X-Men. Witty, smart and a doctor, Beast is one of my favorite X-mutants. I feel he's a bit underrated, too.
62.) Bishop (X-men)
63) Guyver

68) Doc Samson
(http://www.leaderslair.com/she-hulk/she-hulkv3-011pic1.gif)
First appeared in 1971, originally the length of his hair affected his power, just like the "Samson" of legend. Has almost the same powers as Hulk and The Abomination, but does not suffer from personality distortion.
69) Captain Haddock
Tintin's avuncular friend. The captain is thoroughly lovable; hot-tempered, blustery, and sometimes rude, but, truly softhearted.
70) Blade

The oddest super villain I've seen from the pages of Grant Morrison's excellent run on Doom Patrol. "The Painting that Ate Paris" and "Magic Bus" [where Nobody runs for President of the United States, using a bus powered by a LSD emitting bicycle] are favourites of mine. Excellent comic series!

77: Evil Ernie
(http://image.comicvine.com/uploads/vol/19000/18112/18112-106087-1-evil-ernie_400.jpg)
Originally debuting (for but a short while) in Eternity Comics, Evil Ernie became one of the flagship titles/characters for Chaos Comics. His name is, essentially, synonymous with Chaos Comics, despite short publishing stints under other publishers (such as Devil's Due).
A maniacal, undead, leather jacket-wearing hellion with supernatural powers and an insatiable lust for absolute anarchy, Evil Ernie was originally Ernest Fairchild, a young, abused horror movie fan before he eventually became the malevolent madman he would famously evolve into. With his sidekick Smiley, the Psycho Button, Ernie dedicated his unlife to bringing about the apocalypse, while still making time to get into loads of wacky misadventures.

87. Will Eisner's the SPIRIT!!!
Eisner has been called 'the Father of the Graphic Novel". I would agree. It had a film noir sense about it,and it had a great sense of humor as well! Eisner is one of my inspirations. Unlike me,though,Eisner had drive....and a lot more talent in his little finger than I have in my whole body.
88: Saint Of Killers

(Not from the comic, couldn't find an image :hatred:)
90. 'Jimmy' Bond: League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Black Dossier
At great inversion of the original character (unable to be directly named as James Bond for reasons of copyright) and in my mind stands out amongst a cast of brilliant characters in Alan Moore's all-fiction universe as one of the creepiest, amoral villains in comic history: A psychopathic, bumbling, treacherous rapist hidden beneath a vale of suave and cool. As with most of the LoEG 'rebooted' characters there is less a new version as a new view to the character (its hinted on occassion that the fiction books of our universe are merely biographies with the 'cracks' painted over, hiding a darker truth about the characters) and as someone with an overall dislike of the Bond character, it struck not so much as a darker, but a more truthful version of the ultra-violent, sex addicted gung-ho macho thug that Fleming and the films always openly protrayed just in a positive light. The inverted 'Bond gets the girl' ending is particularly brilliant and creepy
91. Dream (Sandman)
The Sandman is a comic book series written by Neil Gaiman and published in the United States by the DC Comics imprint Vertigo. It chronicles the adventures of Dream of The Endless, who rules over the world of dreams, in 75 issues from 1989 until 1996.

Wow, I think you have Ghost Rider ranked a bit too high there. He's good but not that good...
I found a good rankings http://www.bigsmudge.com/rankings/top-100-comic-book-characters (http://www.bigsmudge.com/rankings/top-100-comic-book-characters)
This is less based on opinion and more based on general population votes.

There's no real order. Everyone just posts what they want. I just posted him first as I started the thread and he's my fave.
My Top 10 are
1. Wolverine
2. Batman
3. Spider Man
4. Cyclops
5. Iron Man
6. Nightcrawler
7. Super Man
8. The Human Torch
9. Magneto
10. Kitty Pride
My top 10, no particular order
Spider-Man
Batman
Deadpool
Daredevil
Carnage
Mysterio
Iron Man
Kraven the Hunter
The Thing
Jean Grey/Phoenix
Top 100 lists are a lost art. :bluesad:
I like Venom, it's so obvious though lol. I just love Venom's evil look!

Carnage will kick Venom's ass
(http://farm1.static.flickr.com/100/293366500_8f63c343e4_o.jpg)
Been a while since I posted in this thread, but I think I have a new top ten:
10.) The Riddler (Batman)
9.) Raphael (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)
8.) Wolverine (X-Men)
7.) Beast (X-Men)
6.) Peter Parker/Spider Man (Spider-Man)
5.) Casey Jones (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)
4.) The Penguin (Batman)
3.) The Joker (Batman)
2.) Dr. Octopus (Spider-Man)
1.) The Hulk (The Incredible Hulk)
I love the Bat-villains the most, although I'm more of a Marvel fan and am actually a bigger fan of the Spider-Man/Hulk books. But I think Batman has some of the better written villains: Joker, Riddler, Penguin, Mad Hatter, Anarky, Mr. Freeze, Harvey Dent/Two-Face, etc.

Carnage will kick Venom's ass
This is true. Carnage is Venom's offspring. :twirl:

This is true. Carnage is Venom's offspring. :twirl:

10) Clayface (No preference)
9) Wolverine
8) Hush (Batman)
7) Two-face
