Here in Philly, a radio station has been playing Christmas Music, non-stop, 24/7, since the afternoon of October 31. I personally LOVE Christmas Music, going so far as to pop in cd's in the middle of July. However, many people vehemently loathe it, and tell as such at every opportunity. Question is, how many people here feel Thanksgiving or after is the right time to start "The Christmas Spirit" on the radio, in stores, etc.? I saw the mall had a Santa setup on November 4th, but could've been before that.
On a side note, this is quite possibly my all time favorite tunes, in general:
The Christmas Song by Nat King Cole

Poor, Happy. They don't getcha. Me, I do. I love Christmas music; I have one of my Thanksgiving mixes on right now, and much of it could be described as Christmas music. I listen to Christmas music starting in November and even have my "over xmas music" mix for Christmas night... :teddyr: My Christmas tastes are complicated, and at Christmas Eve and Day I generally appreciate more solemn, austere, followed by ultra modern Jazz...! Timing is everything, and I do pull out the odd Christmas album in Spring and Summer (particularly JUNE CHRISTY's This Time Of Year, one of my all time favorite albums.)
Listening to some of it now:

I hate Xmas and we don't have Thanksgiving over here obviously. I have weird taste when it comes to Christams music, I hate it alot. I love "Baby, Please Come Home For Christmas" by Darlene Love, an old motown song and "No Presents For Christmas" by King Diamond tho' :teddyr::

I love Christams music, but early/mid November is really pushin' it. I was at Wallmart and they had a little Christmas tree up on November 8th, good grief. After Thanksgiving is just about right.

June Christy's great. They've been playing her cd nonstop as well. Good stuff.
Oh, I like Mud "Lonely This Christmas" too.

It makes me sad. :bluesad: I usually spend christmas alone and end up listening to alot of power ballads and eat a big fat steak. I am debating with myself whether or not to spend it with family this year and grace them with my presence.

Since you're in Philly, you'll appreciate this. I was doing my Christmas shopping in the Gallery Mall (it's the big downtown mall for you non-Philly-ers) a couple of years ago. I'm riding up the escalator by the Santa behind a couple of moms. And one is saying to the other "Thank God they got rid of that drunk-ass Santa they had last year..."
As for the music? I do get a little tired of it, there's just too much of it. I think of the day after Thanksgiving as the official opening of the season, and I don't want to see any of that stuff before then.
"The Most Wonderful Time of the Year" makes me laugh now because it was the soundtrack for a Staples (office supply store) ad that showed happy parents dancing through the aisles at back-to-school time with their unhappy kids moping along behind them.

And yes, I don't like hearing it in stores before Thanksgiving. However, there are certain pieces of music that evoke "holidaytime" to me, not necessarily December 25, so Thanksgiving is kind of a great Christmas substitute - all the good stuff, none of the crap - y'know, no decorating, no gift giving, just family, friends, two days off, and a nice meal.

It's a family tradition in our house to watch "Christmas Vacation" this time of year.
"Where do you think you're going? Nobody's leaving. Nobody's walking out on this fun, old-fashioned family Christmas. No, no. We're all in this together. This is a full-blown, four-alarm holiday emergency here. We're gonna press on, and we're gonna have the hap, hap, happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap-danced with Danny f**king Kaye. And when Santa squeezes his fat white ass down that chimney tonight, he's gonna find the jolliest bunch of a***oles this side of the nuthouse."

Rudolph is, hands down, my all time favorite Christmas special. Forget Charlie Brown and his stupid "Wocka Wocka" teachers that sound like horns. Rudolph ALWAYS wins.
Actually I'm odd like that. I hate Xmas but a lot of my favorite movies/shows are Xmas related.

Let me guess, your favorite is
A Very Brady Christmas, featuring the Brady Bunch reunion in 1989? I know it's mine.
I even bought the dvd for Rudolph. That's the best one. Sadly, right after I bought it, I saw a thing at K-Mart with 8 Christmas Specials, including Rudolph, Little Drummer Boy, Santa Claus is Comin to Town, Frosty, How the Grinch Stole Christmas and 2 or 3 others.
Never got into the Bradys but I'm with you on most of selections. However you forgot...well let me remind you...

I like "Rudolph" & "Charlie Brown", but I say "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" is far and away my favorite. Why? One word: KARLOFF.
Furthermore, I too am a crooked jerky jockey who rides a crooked hoss, so I can relate to the main character.

The Grinch is good. I just watched it last night. I can now relate to the character more than I did as a kid, which is kinda sad.
The only Christmas song that I enjoy during the rest of the year is "Power Of Love" by Frankie Goes To Hollywood". The repeated line "I will protect you from the hooded claw...keep the vampires from your door" actually makes it great for Halloween.
