Title: Little Yellow Balls
Post by: Ash on December 22, 2008, 01:53:35 PM
I recently bought some Schweigert brand cervelat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cervelat) summer sausage.

(http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/5933/logonoimageml7.gif) (http://img120.imageshack.us/my.php?image=logonoimageml7.gif)

Inside the sausage, there are these little yellow balls.  I like to slice the sausage very thin, then dig out these little balls with the tip of the knife and eat them.
They have a mustard-like taste.  Are they some sort of mustard?
They're not listed in the ingredients.

I've looked for the answer online and haven't been able to find anything.

Also, I occasionally buy these roast beef on wheat sandwiches from Wal-Mart and they too have little yellow balls in the bread.  These are different, though.  They're hard and crunchy.

Anyone know what the deal with these little yellow balls are?

Those sound like eggs of some sort, if you're lucky, they'll only be spider or cockroach eggs. Your insides are probably infested with some weird kind of parasite. There's a good chance they're not from this planet, and they may be able to control your mind. Ever see "The Manchurian Candidate"? Something like that, except instead of communists, it's some weird kind of alien. They can usually be gotten rid of by drinking large amounts of prune juice.

Just a helpful tip from your Uncle Greg.

Karma!

Thank you.  I've been wondering what those were for awhile now.
They're actually quite tasty.
I knew they had to be seeds of some kind because they have a skin on them.

Now...  Anyone know what the hard crunchy ones in wheat bread are?

No.  These look different.
They look almost identical to mustard seeds but they're hard and crunchy.

If not caraway (they have a very distinctive flavor of anise), they could be sesame, flax or poppy seeds.

Mustard seeds -- which is what mustard is made of IIRC -- are yellow.  In sausage they would probably get soft.  In bread they would stay harder, but I never heard of putting mustard seeds in bread.  Poppy seeds are tiny, round and black with a smoky taste rather than the taste you get with mustard.  Flaxseed is brown or black and teardrop-shaped, with a walnutty taste.  Caraway seeds are long and footballish in shape, with a seam down the middle.  You could also be eating wheatberries or God knows what in this age of multigrain free-for-all.

Of course we can't rule out the spider eggs theory.
