Title: So, what did everybody get for Christmas?
Post by: AndyC on December 25, 2008, 04:06:11 PM
Number one gift for me this year: My wife bought me 20 piano lessons with a local teacher. I will finally learn to play a musical instrument. Been meaning to do that for years. No movies for me this year, but I found AC/DC's Black Ice album in my stocking.

The big gift I bought my wife this year is a Garmin GPS. The little one made out like a bandit, with a new doll and a bunch of puzzles and games, but she was most excited to receive Hungry Hungry Hippos.

So, what did everybody get?

Err...my 'ol man got me some bleach and gave me about $60. I won't be seeing my mom until Saturday, she says she has a few things for me. My stepdad gave me about $200 and I think my friend has got me a Stevie Nicks cd, which I should hopefully recieve tomorrow.

I got a copy of Stephen King's new short story collection from my kids.  Our big family gift exchange is on Sunday.  I also got a copy of THE DARK KNIGHT for my birthday a couple weeks back.

We tend to focus on the kids, but I did manage to get some DVD's: a Special Edition of "Mad Max", Kurt Vonnegut's "Welcome to the Monkey House", "Five Girls" starring Ron Perlman, a documentary about Seabiscuit (the race horse) and "Gingersnaps II" in my stocking.  (All bargain-bin treasures.)  What fun!

Box of assorted candy for children of the 70's.
Couple of gift baskets with assorted stuff like lotion and chocolates.
portable hard drive
popcorn
dvd shelf

To name some off. I think my folks got me a bunch of miscellanies because they ended up buying my brother and his wife a PS3. I got my brother a gift basket which included chef boyardee pizza..lol  I almost burned him a movie, but instead of a movie i would have put a rick roll on it

A throw blanket for my couch

And $50 worth of gift certificates to the two local movie theaters.

The biggie this year was a 19" TV.  this one was as much utility as anything -- it was cheap as hell (I was with mom when she bought it) and even if it only lasts a couple months that's fine, because I decided to get it to replace the TV we're losing in the suite I live in (the guy who brought the TV flunked out), which I'll only be living in until May.

Got some DVDs, all of which I picked out myself at Best Buy or Target...Ed Wood, a Mill Creek 50 movie boxed set "Nightmare Worlds," etc.

Two pairs of pants and two polo shirts...all of which are one size bigger then I generally wear.

Funny story...on the phone with my girlfriend earlier, we're celebrating Christmas tomorrow...she had contemplated getting me all the DVDs I had picked out for myself...and was very concerned that she might have gotten me the same Mill Creek boxed set.

Her mother gave her and I tickets to go see RENT in a couple weeks.

I was shocked at how few gift cards I got this year -- usually I get tons, and this year I actually asked for them.

A brand new pair of waterproof boots (which I wish I had last weekend).  I also received a good amount of cash, some cologne and a VISA gift card.  My son made a haul between us and my wife's family.  His favorite gift was his remote controlled train set which he pretty much ignored all his other gifts for throughout the day.  My parents/brother are coming up this weekend so that will mean more gifts for us.

I've got the MSTK VOL 4 from a while back and Overdrawn at the Memory Bank is my particular favourite out of those four.  Raul Julia slumming it on direct to public tv nonsense full of stock footage and crappy effects.

As for me, I got a cool tungsten hot light for filming/photography purposes and a digital keyboard [piano that is] so that was very cool and a big surprise.  The pick of the rest was a pen with a transformers logo on the top and two arms that punched when you press buttons and  the 'eyes' of the logo light up.  Take that Deceptacons!

Ah, the Christmas swag thread.

The kids here are already up (have been up, since just after I got up at 6).  Jenna has a new bike and a babydoll.  Andy and Garrett got several new construction vehicles (both boys love backhoes, dump trucks, cranes, etc.).  The kids also have Operation and Hungry Hungry Hippos.  The construction stuff is where we have a problem: we gave them some, grandparents gave them some, and uncles and aunts gave them some.  Aggregated, it's more than some.  We had to designate a section of the play room as the parking area.

Andy also got a toy Rodan to go with the other Godzilla monsters (most from last Christmas).

I got a new Casio chronograph watch from my wife, "Hellboy II" on DVD, a small batch of b-movie DVDs like "TNT Jackson" and "Ultraviolet," a bottle of Crown Royal, and Katie cooked a big turkey dinner, along with sweet potato pie.  She normally does ham for Christmas, but the kids and I convinced her to do turkey and it was a darn fine turkey.  I've already picked the leftovers and have enough for several days of yummy cold turkey sandwiches.

I also have four days off in a row!  No USMC duties, nothing that should intrude on the family and I for four days.  It's glorious.

You've earned it, boss.  Kick back, relax, and enjoy some time with the kids . . . and maybe a little B-movie cheese!

I haven't gotten all my gifts, yet.  I'm supposed to get a couple from my brothers, but god knows when those'll get in because all the snow has kept them from shopping.  Anyway, I got:

DVD's:
Toxic Avenger, Garbage Pail Kids the Movie, Gothika, and Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3

Games:
Dragon Quest Swords, Fable 2, Grand Theft Auto 4, Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey

Other stuff:
2 pairs of sleep pants, gift cards to Hastings (total of $35, plus I can trade in some crap movies I want to get rid of, which will probably get me another $10), stocking stuffers (candy, etc), a Jason action figure that broke as I got it out of the package, and $25 cash from my niece, and she said to only use it on B-movies.

I'm so p**sed about the Jason figure breaking at the hip!  I'm going to try to glue it later.  I actually have to work tonight from 9 PM to 6 AM.  Damn Wal-Mart!  I have to convert my department and the neighboring department over to the new set up.  All of our Christmas junk has to go on clearance and not be present in apparel at all, plus my fellow manager has to have her gift section (what they call a "hot spot" in Wal-Mart lingo) marked down and sent away from her department.  I'll laugh if our price change module failed to download again like it did for Black Friday.

I got the same thing I always get - huge bucketloads of cash missing from my bank account, and a smiling wife and three smiling children  :teddyr:  [sarcasm] I guess I get my joy from the giving, rather than the receiving [/sarcasm]  I dropped about a dozen hints that I would really like the "Are You Being Served?" DVD megaset, but instead I got three pairs of pants.  Oh well, you know...you can never have enough pants.

yeah it was by far the coolest thing in the box because i don't remember them being that big when i was a kid. now they're angelina jolie size..

What was disappointing were the candy cigarettes. They were not like the ones that I had growing up with the hollow tube in the middle where the dust was that you could blow

what rat bastard decided to make it their moral obligation to ban those??

My wife and I focused on the kids.  My soon to be 8 y/o got a video camera so he can make the movie he keeps talking about.  He says that it will be a phenomena like Star Wars was. (He asked his grandmother for 50 Jedi costumes but she did not take him up on it) My 5 y/o daughter go ballet lessons, and the two of them got a wii.

Second load of swag...from the girlfriend and her family

50 movie pack -- Legends of Horror
Betty Crocker cook book
A pair of nice shirts that I have to go exchange (though I'm flattered my possibly-future-mother-in-law thinks I can squeeze into a Large)

my girlfriend's aunt and her life partner came to visit from Boston, and surprised me with a nice shirt that fit properly...how is it a woman who only met me once, at Easter, can shop for me more successfully than my mother can?

I'm going to count the delicious beef stew with dumplings as a gift.

Two books arrived late for me: "Monty Python, Shakespeare, and English Renaissance Drama" and "A Critical History and Filmography of Toho's Godzilla Series"

Mothers buy you what they think or wish you would wear/like. Women who don't know you have nothing to lose
Although i'm lucky with mine who gave up years ago when i was a teenager and now still includes stuff like barbarella in my gifts.

All which he returned because "the chainsaw i have works just fine". Jeez. Candy cigarettes!  The most deliciously evil of candies!

Per wikipedia, they are sometimes known as "sugar fags" in the UK  :buggedout:!

There's no ban on them in the US, I think the market just dropped out when people turned against smoking.  You can find a number of different brands for sale via the Internet.

I don't remember a hollow tube with dust you could blow.  I didn't have them often, but I seem to remember the ones I had  were just pure solid sugar cylinders.  No real taste to them, it was just the novelty of having something forbidden to kids.  I remember just putting them in my mouth and trying to fool other kids into thinking they were really cigarettes.

no, but i do remember doing it with those mint lifesavers. the thing about pop rocks is they never put enough in the bag. and nothing was worse then when i lived overseas and they would all stick together because of the humidity and lose their pop

The sad part is vs relief of that not being the actual gift i was a little bummed when i lifted the flap and saw the "Gotcha!" written on it, that i wasn't getting a pet feeding docking station after all

Seriously, who wouldn't want a Kiss Kasket?
Especially when, according to the band, it could be used as a cooler for party drinks?

I already posted about my new TV (http://www.badmovies.org/forum/index.php/topic,122369.0.html)

My son got me the complete X-Files collection (all 9 seasons and the first movie).  I got him a disc world book and calendar signed by Terry Pratchett.

I got my daughter a new HP laptop in hopes she'll finally find a grad school to go to and move out.  Got the wife a new heated mattress cover and a digital camera of her own.

I also got two new Hallmark Star Trek ornaments to add to my collection,  the USS Reliant, and a TOS communicator.  My wife also got me 6 new undershirts to replace the ones with the hideous under arm stains.

A lot of gift cards, cuz it's a pain in the ass to transport presents on the bus ride back home afterwards.

Also, my friend whom I haven't seen in a few years called me to tell me that his fiancee had bought us tickets to see Wrestlemania 25... a woman whom I've never met or even talked to spent $350 to buy me a ticket to a one night event... now I gotta see if I can rustle up the $400 in travel expenses it's gonna take me to get down to Austin and back. :buggedout:

Yeah there was a variety where you could blow the smoke out, those were the best ones. You only got one real puff tho and they might have been the bubble gum ones.

You're right, it was the bubble gum ones.  It was that weird sugary cornstarch stuff they coated the gum with to keep it from sticking.  Sadly, I always tried to save my one "puff" and when I wanted to show off, the "butt" was damp and I couldn't blow the "smoke" out.

Wow, nothing like sharing embarrassing crap in public, huh?

I asked my folks for one of those converter boxes we'll all be needing in February.
I knew they had an extra one lying around.
Instead, they got me a new TV.
I was kinda' hoping for a converter box so I could hook it up to my VCR, but this'll do.
It's just that now, I need to get me one of them uhh, uhh, things...

I was gonna see how all my porn looked on it, but I discovered it gets these subchannels.
One of 'em is the Mhz network, which plays these weird Russian movies. Last week, I saw this super cheesy Russian Musical called The Snow Queen, & tonight I sat through Tarkovski's The Sacrifice.
The other one is the This network, which plays all these classic baddies from the seventies.

My sister gave me a copy of Kicking & Screaming.
I didn't have the heart to tell them that I don't like Will Ferrel. Then again, it might have been revenge for giving her kids a copy of Monsters Inc a few years ago.
She also gave me a photo scrapbook with a cartoon of Wonder Woman on the cover. I just can't help but wonder if she was trying to tell me something.
