In the early 90's, I was heavy into rap.
I tricked out the stereo in my car (spent hundreds of dollars on subs and amps) to produce deep bass that you could feel in your teeth and chest. To say that I was an audiophile was an understatement.
If God asked me to blast my all-time favorite rap song that, in my opinion, defined the 90's, it'd be this one:

NOT SAFE FOR WORK!!!
What would you blast?
"I Wish" by Skee-Lo

Honestly, there's a whole selection of songs I could choose from. This one just popped up in my head though.
I don't like rap except Run DMC and NWA but....
2-Pac "California Love"

Ice Ice Baby, Vanilla Ice

Gangsta's Paradise, Coolio

Opposites Attract, Paula Abdul.

I don't like rap, but I did like this one. Nice protest song instead of that gangsta posturing.

I was fascinated with Flava Flave for a short period after this came out because, as I was quick to point out to anyone who asked, "he wears a big mother****in' CLOCK!"

I'm not much of a rap fan but "U can't touch this" by MC Hammer was probably the first rap song that I actually found listenable.

I love "F-Da-Police" but I won't post it here. Heres another one...of course this is very much...

I seriously think Ice Cube had one of the most fierce voices in rap. Watching him in family comedies now just doesn't seem right. MC Ren was a bad ass too...aw hell they were all bad asses.
Another one I thought of...NSFW

I just had to counter with this:
Amish Paradise by "Weird Al" Yankovic.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsfVw9xxoNY
What's not entertaining about a rap song talking up the utter boring lives of the Amish?
Funny, I like rap, but I hate most mainstream rap. I really do not care about how much money so-and-so makes. I sure as hell don't care enough to listen to a whole song about it. I was glad when I discovered alternative hip-hop, where they sing about things other than bankrolls and what a bad ass the fake gangster "rhyming" is.
I do like that Mos Def, though.
'90s rap? This song.

You're lucky. I could have posted that Rumpshaker video. Oh wait, here it is:

"Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix A Lot.

Sorry, but this song defined me in the '90s. Granted, I was like, 8 when it came out. But it helped me form a love for a certain thing.

I have a strong distaste for Rap. I'm of the ilk that thinks you can't spell crap without rap. But the rap I've tolerated include, Ice Ice Baby, Baby got Back, Fresh Prince, Momma said knock you out. That is about it.. Well the ones Weird Al did in parody are great.

Ive got approx 2000 rap / hip hop albums and 95% of them are 1991-'96 era. easily the best years. most of it is rubbish now
I saw organized and nas live in that era!! they were good but gang starr was the best

nice... would have liked to have seen them around that time, definitely. and GangStarr. I only really got into rap around 98-99, missed the boat slightly :bluesad:
it was a great era. completely amazing albums were coming out every week. I remember hearing AZ's "suger hill" and thinking "yeah, it's over" the cheese had seeped back in

hmm dunno about that I love that track, lol :teddyr: It is slightly more commercial than most tracks from back then though, fair enough
I think it started to go properly downlhill when Puff Daddy/Bad Boy started coming out with real lightweight nonsense, and horrible shouty rappers like DMX and Xzibit appeared. can't stand them!
" I love that track"
I don't even remember it now.
here were some of my favorites of that era some or all of which I'm sure you know:
1 Artifacts- Between a Rock and a Hard PLace the whole album
2. KMD- what a niggy know
3. Redman- Green Island
4. alkoholics w/ ODB - hip hop drunkies
5. Audio Two- Top Billin
6. Schooly D pretty much anything. the guy was laughably bad on the mic but really pretty entertaining for some reason
7. cormega- any
8. capone n noriega, any
9 KRS One "the MC"
10. mobb deep - allustrius
nice list, yeah I do have most of those... the Artifacts album is amazing
Heavy Ammunition
