Title: New Computer
Post by: meQal on February 24, 2009, 12:26:55 AM
Well I've been waiting and finally I am getting a new computer delivered tomorrow. I ordered one from a company called ibuypower out of CA and they shipped it overnight express to me today. The new one has two DVD-RW drives in it as well as a lot of other cool features including a 22 inch LCD monitor. I had it custom built to do three things : gaming, watching movies, and taking screenshots from those movies. While it's not the best, it is well built for what I want it to do. Needless to say, I'm happy about it cause I hate the current comp I am using which is an old Compaq running on a Intel Celeron processor. Been overwhelming it a bit too much with some of my gaming.

Compaq =  :thumbdown:

I have yet to meet anyone who has had anything good to say about Compaq.

Indeed. And the Celeron was always junk. The clock cycles always look impressive in ads for bargain PCs, but the chip can't handle the same load as a Pentium.

Then again, I'm an AMD man, and have been for years.

Yeah, my wife bought it off the shelf at Wal-Mart for my kids to use. It's a good web browser but nothing else. Gaming or anything else, it stinks. My other comp died on me and my wife has tried to get out of replacing it for the longest. Think when I mentioned I was either getting a new computer or a prison cell this year made her decide to let me get it.

My last computer was a Compaq Presario.  I dunno, all I used it for was web browsing, spreadsheets and the word processor.  Worked fine, and lasted a long time.  Well, by "fine" I mean it froze up rather often, had a whole pile of problems anytime you tried to install anythign new on it, etc etc.  I was still running Windows 98 up until about a year ago  :teddyr:  It finally died right about the time I was going to replace it anyway.  It was really, really slow - couldn't even watch Youtube videos, but it was old.

I USED to get my computers through American Business Systems (ABS), but as of the last several new systems, have bought the parts and done it myself. There's really not much money to be saved (especially living in Alaska where the shipping cost is ~$200 if you include a case), BUT, I get exactly what parts I want. I always hated building one online and realizing I have such limited choices on parts, especially cases.

But ABS does really well, great systems for a real good price, and they include a binder with all the literature and discs in it instead of all that stuff in a pile in the bottom of the box. I've bought a few systems off of them and they were always ~$200 less than other brands, while offering parts closer to what I was looking for.

Also they sent me a copy of Halo 2.

I don't care for Vista (yet), I bought a new desk top (Alienware X58) it came with Vista, I set it up with a duel boot of Vista and XP Pro.

Got to love Alienware (http://www.alienware.com/). I have 4 Dell's and 2 Alienware's and a couple of bastard piece together's. Yes I have to many computers.

Well I got a problem now that I have never experinced before. Apparently when I use to new comp, it causes the older one to lock up. Only thing I can figure is it's got something to do with an electrical field produced by the new one. If anyone else has seen something like this, let me know what you had to do to fix it.

Not enough information ... are they all plugged into the same power strip? Could be a voltage drop, are they networked? could be a configuration problem. Normally proximity will have little to no effect on other computers.
