Title: Free ON DEMAND movies for April
Post by: Rev. Powell on April 03, 2009, 06:38:17 PM
For those of you who have this feature on yourcable system, here's some of the stuff that looks interesting to me this month. I don't have access to all of the channels some of you have, so feel free to add other channels if they're available in your area.

FEARNET
DESCENT:  This seems interesting.  I think I've heard people talk it up.  Ends 5/7.
DRIVE THRU:  Looks deliberately dumb and has a killer clown.  Ends 4/22.
ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK: You've probably already seen it.  Me too.  Ends 4/8
NEAR DARK:  Check out this inventive vampire flick if you haven't already.  Ends 4/30
SILENT HILL: Check out Andrew's review.  Incomprehensible but pretty.  Ends 4/12.

Lotsa other horror movies, most of which look mediocre but you may find some cheesy gems.

TURNER CLASSIC:
ANNIE HALL:  It's been a while, maybe I'll check it out again.  Ends 4/17.
THE DOT AND THE LINE: 12 minute abstract animated film by Chuck Jones about a dot falling in love with a line.  Ends 5/1
THE PINK PANTHER: Peter Sellars version.  Maybe a watch.  Ends 4/10.

SUNDANCE CHANNEL:
AUTO FOCUS: The sleazy Bob Crane biopic. I'll probably check this one out.  Ends 5/12.
GRASS: Pro-pot documentary.  I've seen it.  Makes a few good points but mostly preaching to the stoner choir.  Has clips of REEFER MADNESS and similar stuff.  Ends 4/7.
GREEN PORNO series: 8 comic shorts with Isabella Rossellini about the mating habits of various insects.  Ends 5/26.
GUMMO: Heard of it, never checked it out before.  I will this time.  Ends 5/12.
THEM: The French horror film, not the giant ant pic.  Maybe.  Ends 5/5.

INDEPENDENT FILM:
EDMOND: A drama directed by Stuart Gordon from a David Mamet script starring William H. Macy?  Strange bedfellows.  Sounds worth a look.  Ends 4/15.

Comments welcome!

I watched Auto Focus a couple years ago.  I think it did a good job showing how an addiction to sex could be just as deadly as an addiction to drugs.   But it was so depressing that I can't say that I enjoyed it.

I watched NEW KIDS on Fearnet last night. It was directed by Sean (FRIDAY THE 13th) Cunningham. No gore...but it's kinda fun watching a young James Spader as a psycho teenager.

GUMMO is a must see!!! This is one of those films that you either love or hate.

Thanks for the warning on AUTO-FOCUS, Bmeansgood, but depressing is not a problem for me.

I was excited and surprised to see GUMMO show up; I've been hearing about it for years.  Funny thing, I fins myself being neutral about a lot of "love 'em or hate 'em" movies.  I guess I see the good and the bad in them at the same time, and they cancel each other out.

EDMOND is not recommended, it's confused and pretentious, worth checking out only for diehard William H. Macy fans.

Yeah, Edmond was terrible. It got a bit talk-y too. I've seen a lot of beautiful sites in my life; however seeing william h macy in gay sex scene was not one of them...

You could have warned me earlier!     At least you're a girl; think how I feel seeing William H. snuggling with his cellmate!
