Title: Do you replace the parts or the item?
Post by: Mr. DS on April 17, 2009, 05:51:40 AM
My grill outside unfortunately needs some new parts.  I did some research on new burners and their guards and found out it would literally cost me about 80 bucks to replace.  I honestly didn't pay much more than that for the grill itself three years ago.  I know that three years isn't a long time but keep in mind, I use thing almost every week.

So looking at the ends and the means, I'm 90% decided that just buying another grill similar to it would be the best option.  I have no clue why these damn parts are so expensive.  Probably because they want you to...well...buy another grill.

Of course I can see replacing parts on bigger items for cars.  However, for little things like grills and whatnot, do you replace the part or the item itself?

Go look at a brand new grill just like the one you have as well as the one you're looking at buying, and compare their brand new parts to the brand new replacement parts, that could help you a little. Sometimes the replacement parts are such junk it's nowhere near worth it to replace them, while other times the ORIGINAL parts are so crappy and the replacement parts are better enough that you'll get more out of rebuilding the thing.

replace item IMO. otherwise you end up with some kind of Frankenstein creation, that only you know how to operate. I use this as a general rule, I'm not a fan of self-built hybrid monstrosities, in general. others may beg to differ...

Not really considering the repair parts are made for it. Gas grills are quite simple, and it's usually the burner and the igniter that need replacement, those are easy and easy to find drop-in parts.

In general, if I like an item and it has replacement parts that I can replace simply and easily and don't cost more than one third the price of a new item, I replace. Otherwise, upgrade to new item.

I'd only replace the parts if it was cost effective or I was really happy with how the original item worked.

If it was just a grill that grilled then replace it... If however the grill turned your meat into gold... replace the parts...

oh right well if 'specifically made' replacement parts are available then yeah, fair enough...

at the end of the day you've just got to bite the bullet and do whatever the f**k you want to do tho, init...
